Have you ever heard of a more ridiculous treatment for an injury than Fulham treating Brede Hangeland with cheese? (See 13:04) Let us know.

Gareth, Caterham, via text: I always thought that vogue a few years back for injecting animal placenta into footballers to help their injuries heal faster was totally ridiculous.

Juan Mata has eight goals and four assists in 19 Premier League games for Manchester United. Good - but not good enough to keep his place.

Elton, London: Glad Pochettino is playing an unchanged XI. Last season there was too much tinkering every week and as a result the deluge of new signings weren't able to gel. I'm going for a narrow Spurs win.

Tom Crossman: I have to admit, I'm a little annoyed Juan Mata has been dropped instead of RvP. Mata got a goal last game and played well - the same cannot be said for RvP. I hope Van Gaal isn't being biased towards a fellow Dutchman...

  5. Carlo wants more of the Real thingpublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 21 September 2014

If Louis van Gaal ever needs any advice on keeping his squad of attacking superstars happy, he can always pick up the phone and dial M for Madrid.

You would think Carlo Ancelotti would be a pretty happy manager this weekend. You might even think he could afford himself a little bask in the warming glow of an 8-2 scoreline, which saw Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Javier Hernandez all get in on the goalscoring action in a demolition of Deportivo La Coruna. But no, the Italian is not settling. He wants more from his team.

"We have to improve. We showed the quality everyone knows we have which is the capability to score in many different ways," he said. "But we need to continue improving the balance and our consistency."

I fear for whoever they are playing when they finally find that balance.

"Brede Hangeland was given a lump of cheese,, external soaked in alcohol, and this is straight from the horse's mouth, and was told to leave it on a thigh injury overnight. The club doctor, who has now moved on strangely enough, he didn't think it was a good idea so I don't think Brede did it.

"It is one of many ridiculous and sad stories we have heard about Felix Magath that have ultimately cost him his job and put Fulham in a world of trouble now. All the experienced players they had at the end of last season were desperate to leave and did so as quickly as they could."

    MOTD2 Extra

Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray: "It's about the freedom. There was a lot of moving around and some of his best work came on the left-hand side. Once it went 3-0 up, Mesut Ozil did track back."

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy: "He came to Arsenal with one of the best assist records in Europe. The problem is, when he is wide, he expends so much energy he hasn't got the legs to go forward. What Ozil did against Villa, he ended up in the wide positions because he saw the space. When he starts wide, he gets isolated and trapped. He thrives on confidence. The flexibility and variation is crucial for Arsenal to be successful."

Football writer Amy Lawrence: "I do worry for WBA. It is difficult to envisage a situation where Alan Irvine is given enough time to adapt. The Premier League is a pretty unforgiving place to come in. He has not had a huge amount of experience at the sharpest end, but has worked a long time as a well regarded number two. Patience is not available when you are at the bottom of the league. I would expect Tottenham to win today."

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy: "When you bring a manager in that the fans aren't enthused by, after finishing the season terribly, anybody with any intelligence would suggest you should appoint somebody the fans like. That gives you breathing space. Fans give someone they like a chance. Get someone in who the fans want, someone with experience too, and let the club enjoy it a while. As soon as WBA lost a game, the fans were on him. I fancy Spurs today. I expect them to steamroll them."

Football writer Amy Lawrence: "I give a lot of credit to Ronald Koeman. The situation is a bit like Man United and Louis Van Gaal-lite. He's done well in the Dutch market, and that's perhaps a market that's been underestimated in the Premier League in recent seasons. A lot of the credit also goes to the players. There's a new ideology from the top and they've gone again. Southampton need some reward for what they're doing."

Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray: "It's probably helped that they've got a new manager and new players. It's almost like a new club. Koeman looks the business. I don't think they'll stick around the top six, I think 10th is a very reasonable aspiration."

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy: "They all deserve credit, and you do need a bit of luck. The sending off changed things against Swansea. Steven Davies has shone, he's managed to keep Morgan Schneiderlin on board, and they've still got a good nucleus of players who know what the club is about. They've moved forward (since the summer) and not dwelt on it. You haven't seen protests from the fans, they've gone on with it. Long may it continue because the more teams who contribute at the top, the more exciting it is."

Newcastle battled back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Hull at home on Saturday - but what about the future of under-pressure manager Alan Pardew?

Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray: "There needs to be some clarity right from top. We need to hear from the owner Mike Ashley, what his plans and thoughts are - and we just don't know because he does not do any speaking, for good or for bad. I stated in January that Alan Pardew was my manager of the year at that stage. In the first half of last season they were superb but then they fell away dramatically. And as soon as they lose a couple of games it will be back to square one and some will not rest until he is gone."

Football writer Amy Lawrence: "It is a rollercoaster at Newcastle - the word was designed for what goes on at St James' Park. Pardew is getting the blame but some people say he is a stooge for what going on behind the scenes and whether the fans want him to go it is about a bigger picture, there is more happening at the club."

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy: "I think Pardew has been a tad unlucky - he had a brilliant spell last season where they went a large number of games unbeaten, he lost his best player in a move that was out of his hands and by all accounts he is not in charge of transfers. It is not just him to blame, other people as well are behind the predicament there. At least there was a fight yesterday and Pardew made the substitution that changed the game. Pardew is hanging on for dear life but I like someone who has got fight. He is the manager and he is taking the blame and he has to stand up for himself. I think it is just a matter of time. It is a mess."

"Manchester United won 4-0 against QPR, they played really well and Juan Mata scored. What more can he do he? The problem for Man Utd this season will be leaving big names out. Without Champions League football, will Louis van Gaal be able to keep those players happy?

"Because it does not matter how much money you earn, if you are not playing you are unhappy. And those players could become a negative influence on the team."

Mata, 26, is a substitute for today's trip to the King Power Stadium.
