Moti the hero

Absolutely astonishing. Let's recap that last 10 minutes of madness.

In the last minute of extra time Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad have goalkeeper Vladislav Stoyanov sent off against Steaua Bucharest. Centre back Cosmin Moti, a Romanian, is forced to go in goal for the penalty shootout with all three substitutions having already been made.

Moti steps up to convert the first penalty before saving two of Bucharest's to send his side into the Champions League group stages. He was probably four yards off his line when he saved the decisive kick but who cares? What a story.

The celebrations will go on long into the night.

The Bulgarian fans are chanting 'Moti, Moti' ad he has done it. The stand-in goalkeeper launches into a wild celebration as he puts Ludogorets Razgrad into the Champions League group stages. Incredible. Two saves from the centre back.

Moti could be the hero yet. The defender, now a stand-in goalkeeper, saves Steaua's second penalty after his side Ludogorets Razgrad missed their own spot kick. It is 2-2 from the spot now with two penalties each left.

Stand-in goalkeeper Cosmin Moti, who is Romanian, first though steps up to slam home the first penalty for the Bulgarians. Moti dances around on his line but Steaua make it 1-1 in the shoot-out.

Penalty drama

Drama in the Champions League play-off between Bulgaria's Ludogorets Razgrad and Steaua Bucharest. It has gone to a penalty shootout but Ludogorets have had their goalkeeper Vladislav Stoyanov sent off in the last minute of extra time. All three substitutions have been made and their centre-half Cosmin Moti goes between the posts for the shootout.

Besiktas manager Slaven Bilic talking to Sky Sports: "It was a very open game. It was a very bad time to concede.

"I was banned enough (to comment on the potential penalties) but we are very disappointed, we are gutted because we played good in both and are close to qualifying for Champions League against great opponents. Of course we are gutted.

"Those couple of chances we had to score but we didn't. Congratulations to Arsenal they had the experience and quality up front when needed.

"I can't blame Demba Ba but you have to score that goal."

Bilic again declined to comment on the penalty incidents at the end of the interview.

Simon in Woking: Oh dear doom mongers and naysayers. Arsenal have let you all down again by qualifying for the Champions League for a 17th consecutive year AND in a most un-Arsenal style. Gutted.

Andrew: Arsene Wenger is mad to think he currently has enough up-front in this Arsenal squad to make ends meet this season. But in true Arsene Wenger style he'll still probably guide Arsenal to a fourth place finish and Champions League football in May. But if he wants to win anything of note at this football club again he must invest in a proven world-class striker.

"Olivier Giroud had surgery today. It went well but he will be out, for maybe top competition, until end of December beginning of Januray.

On whether he will try to sign a striker: "We will look around but we want quality. We have quality, we have Walcott coming back soon, Podolski, Campbell, Sanogo. To find players better than we have would be very difficult.

"Anytime you have a problem you can't always buy. I bought Sanchez to be a striker, Walcott can be a very good striker, Sanogo is a very good striker, Campbell if you ask him what he is he says a striker. All players of quality."

Giroud out until end of year

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud had surgery on his ankle today and is expected to be out of action until the end of the year, manager Arsene Wenger confirms.

Late drama at Villa Park as League One Leyton Orient take the lead with only three minutes left through Romain Vincelot's header.

Gokhan Tore's cross at the far post is close to picking out Demba Ba but the Senegal striker fails to make proper contact and the ball goes wide. Manger Slaven Bilic was on his feet before having his head in his hands.

Adam Johnson doubles Sunderland's lead with a right footed shot from the centre of the penalty area to the bottom left corner after a pass from Jozy Altidore.

Jon Walters has scored two, and he makes the third with a cross which Peter Crouch gobbles up. Textbook header.

Leeds were only ahead for two minutes at Bradford before Billy Knott sends the home fans into delight with a right-footed shot from outside the box that goes into the top right corner of the net.

Leeds United have been down to 10 men since the 30th minute, but David Hockaday's side take the lead in the West Yorkshire derby as Matt Smith heads them into a 1-0 lead.

The cross came from David Norris and Smith got his first goal of the season.

There is no parking the bus from an adventurous 10-man Arsenal. Attack is obviously seen the best form of defence as the match swings from end-to-end. Both sides look capable of scoring.

Besiktas are pushing for that away goal now. Arsene Wenger is looking a little twitchy on the substitutes bench and who can blame him? Seven minutes to go.

This could be a horrible last 11 minutes for Arsenal. Although they are still pushing for the second and Atiba Hutchinson is booked for lunging at Alexis Sanchez after some brilliant skill from the Chilean. Free-kick to Arsenal 30 yards out.....

Sanchez is inches from converting a whipped-in free-kick but can't make proper contact.

Sunderland get the breakthrough at St Andrew's as Jordi Gomez puts the Premier League side ahead.

The goal comes from Adam Johnson's pass, which finds Gomez 25 yards out and he drills a low effort past Birmingham goalkeeper Colin Doyle. But Blues' boss Lee Clark is furious, arguing the ball had gone out in the build-up to the goal.

Shock alert! League Two side Burton Albion take the lead against top-flight opposition and it's a beauty too, Adam McGurk curling a free-kick home from 20 yards.

RED CARD

Just seconds after Arsenal squander a golden opportunity through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to take the lead, they are down to 10 men when Mathieu Debuchy receives his second yellow card for tugging back a Besiktas player.

Chaos here as Calum Chambers is also booked for coming on too early as he replaces Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal should be 2-0 up though as Oxlade Chamberlain had his shot at the far post blocked before Debuchy's sending off. He should score.

A tight opening half at St Andrew's in the League Cup second round tie between Birmingham and Sunderland.

David Cotterill has hit the post for Blues after both Billy Jones and Wes Brown failed to clear the danger and Wes Thomas has also fired wide for the hosts.

Sunderland's Jozy Altidore volleyed over from Sebastian Larsson's dinked pass and Connor Wickham blasted off target from 25 yards.

Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca will be welcome at the Emirates again after that first half. To be fair, it would be hard argue against his two big calls but they could have gone against Arsenal.

Mathieu Debuchy and Jack Wilshere will both be relieved men after penalty shouts against them. Debuchy just about got the ball, while it is difficult to see if there was contact between Wilshere and Ramon Motta. A lot of officials would have given it but, if he didn't see contact, he was right to wave play on.

HALF-TIME

Two seasons ago Bradford reached the League Cup final and they have a good chance of moving into the third round as opponents Leeds United are down to 10 men following two bookings for Luke Murphy inside 30 minutes.

The League One side have also had the best chance but Aaron McLean's diving header from inside the six-yard box after Alan Sheehan's in-swinging cross was off target.

Stephen Warnock's fizzing effort, which went narrowly over the bar, is the closest David Hockaday's side have come.

"Before the goal, I thought Wenger might give it 15 minutes after half-time before making a change.

"[Besiktas coach Slaven] Bilic must be very frustrated and sad for his players as they have been well organised."

It is goalless at Villa Park in the League Cup second round tie as Premier League Aston Villa and League One Leyton Orient have only managed one shot on target between them.

That came from Villa's forgotten man Darren Bent, making his first start for the club since May 2013. He was put clear by debutant Joe Cole's through ball and was one-on-one with Orient's Gary Woods, but the goalkeeper got his foot to the shot and diverted the ball wide.

Orient's best chance fell to captain David Mooney, who headed wide from Elliot Omozusi's cross.

Besiktas can consider themselves to be a little unfortunate. Arsenal may have shaded the possession and had more shots in the opening half but it was the visitors looking more incisive on the break. Different game now though.

Great timing as the Gunners finally make the breakthrough.

Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil play an intricate one-two on the edge of the penalty area and, when the former fails to collect the ball, Alexis Sanchez is on hand to slot home his first goal for Arsenal.

When you look at that live it looks like Wilshere caught Motta from behind. Arsenal are very lucky to get away with that.

Motta is about to pull the trigger. Jack slips and catches him. That has to be a penalty.

If it was at the other end, on one of the Arsenal players, the lid would have come off the place.

Arsenal go up the other end and almost take the lead themselves as Jack Wilshere chips the ball through to Alexis Sanchez but the striker's touch is heavy and goalkeeper Tolga Zungin smothers.

What a chance for Besiktas. Olcay Sahan gets in down the left channel and his pull back looks certain to be tapped home by Ramon Motta before Jack Wilshere throws himself into a desperate lunge from behind.

The Turks appeal for a penalty as Motta goes down in the penalty area but referee Pedro Proenca waves play on. He got that right but risky from Wilshere.

The Emirates sounds a nervy place at the moment. The fans know the importance of qualifying for the Champions League group stages but, with less than 10 minutes of the first half remaining, Arsenal have got a real task on their hands.

It hasn't been a classic, but you get the feeling there is drama ahead.

"I don't think he appreciates being a lone striker. When Olivier Giroud plays it is all geared to play to him. With Sanchez up top they are not playing it into him in the same way. It is not geared up for him.

Santi Cazorla is looking a real threat for Arsenal. At the moment though his team-mates don't seem to be on the same wavelength. Half an hour gone and still no breakthrough.

Another good chance for the Gunners. Goalkeeper Tolga Zengin looks unsure with the ball at his feet in the penalty area and can only clear straight to Santi Cazorla. The Spaniard attempts to chip the stranded keeper from 30 yards but gets it horribly wrong and his shot goes well wide.

Nothing is ever easy - just ask Celtic.

The Scottish Premier League champions were dumped out of Europe last night by Slovenian side Maribor, after a humiliating 1-0 home loss.

Imagine the reaction from the Emirates if similar happened tonight? It is safe to say Wenger would be feeling the heat once more.

So, the nine-year trophy drought is finally over at Arsenal.

You could almost sense those dark clouds lifting from the Emirates when the Gunners beat Hull to lift the FA Cup in May. The Community Shield followed earlier this month and four points from the opening two Premier League games leaves all happy in north London.

It doesn't take long for that to change though. Defeat tonight and the mood would quickly darken again around the Emirates.

Something has to give then. Both Besiktas and Arsenal have been fairly formidable in Champions League qualifying matches but that can't go on for both of them this evening.

Crystal Palace co-chairman Steve Parish has spoken to BBC Radio 5 live following the appointment of Neil Warnock as his new manager. Malky Mackay or Tim Sherwood had been favourites to get the job earlier in the week before talks broke down.

He said: "There was no lack of candidates. We made the choice of Neil because he is the best person to take us forward now. He did a great job when he was here before and he understands the club.

"He offered his services very early on so it was always an option that was there. The picture you try to paint that he was the last choice is not true. The standard of people that applied was very high... World Cup winners.

"Everybody that we saw and we enquired about wanted very much to manage the football club. I'm sure if we had rung them last night they would still have wanted to manage the club."

What do we know about Besiktas? Former Chelsea and Newcastle striker Demba Ba will be leading the attack for the Turks, having scored a treble in the previous round.

The Turks are managed by ex-West Ham man Slaven Bilic. The Croat will missing from the Turks' dugout after being sent to the stands for arguing with referee Milorad Mazic in the first leg.

"It's not ideal of course. I regret it and would love to be down there with the boys," he said. "But I don't see a huge problem in it. We have prepared our game plan and I have a big belief in my assistants and they'll do the job there."

Summer signing from Barcelona Alexis Sanchez will be the man asked to operate as the lone striker in the absence of Olivier Giroud, although he did little to help his cause against Everton at the weekend,

He was replaced at half-time at Goodison following an ineffective 45 minutes as the focal point of Arsenal's attack, but Wenger is convinced he can operate as more than a winger.

He said: "You do not convict a player on one half. It was not all bad what he did, there was some quality in what he did. It was just that on the day we needed more physical presence."

Elsewhere Austria's FC Salzburg travel to Malmo, of Sweden, leading 2-1 and Romanian club Steaua Bucharest travel to Ludogorets Razgrad of Bulgaria leading 1-0.

Talking about strikers, it appears Arsene Wenger is prepared to ride out his latest potential problems in attack.

There are fears France international Olivier Giroud is facing a substantial spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury, but the Gunners boss isn't about to rush into signing a replacement,

With Alexis Sanchez, Joel Campbell, Yaya Sanogo, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott, he believes he already has enough.

A gamble? Only time will tell.
