  1. Manager reactionpublished at 22:00 British Summer Time 27 August 2014

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on Giroud's injury:

"Olivier Giroud had surgery today. It went well but he will be out, for maybe top competition, until end of December beginning of Januray.

On whether he will try to sign a striker: "We will look around but we want quality. We have quality, we have Walcott coming back soon, Podolski, Campbell, Sanogo. To find players better than we have would be very difficult.

"Anytime you have a problem you can't always buy. I bought Sanchez to be a striker, Walcott can be a very good striker, Sanogo is a very good striker, Campbell if you ask him what he is he says a striker. All players of quality."

Relief will be the overriding feeling around Arsenal at the moment. Besiktas enjoyed more of the ball in a tense encounter but failed to hit the target in the entire match.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshire speaking to Sky Sports after the game:

"It is tough against a good team with 10 man. They have good quality but we dug it out and showed good character. We had a few chances and normally at this level you get punished for that.

"After going down to 10 we are men happy with the 1-0. We showed great character, and the defence was brilliant, 17 years in Champions League shows what a big club we are.

"It is unthinkable not to be in the Champions League. We have to be at this level."

"All credit to Besiktas. Slaven Bilic and his team really tested Arsenal.

"It was a vital time for Alexis Sanchez to score a goal in the first half, when Arsenal were second best really.

"Arsenal played for 15 minutes down to ten men but did what they had to do.

"As an Arsenal fan, my heart was in the mouth a few times. The Wilshere penalty chance was 100% a penalty.

"They have scrapped through, but they are through, and Arsene Wenger has preserved his wonderful record."

A 17th consecutive season in the Champions League for Arsenal but, boy, were they made to work for their place.

Alexis Sanchez's first goal for the Gunners proves a very lucrative one as the home side thank the supporters for sticking by them.

On Demba Ba's missed late chance at the far post:

"It's a teasing cross that has eluded everybody and Demba Ba should be putting that in. In his defence, Mertesacker is the biggest man on the pitch. Bilic can't believe his striker has missed that."

Surely that will be that. The visitors chip the ball out for an Arsenal goal kick and the Gunners are almost there.
