John Terry tells Thibaut Courtois to "bang it", pointing up to the United goal. Nothing fancy now from the Blues.

Thibaut Courtois comes and claims a corner and there wasn't a lot of pressure around him. That doesn't stop the Belgian flopping to the floor, claiming he has got a knee in the back from Marcos Rojo. Five to go.

Robin van Persie is cocking his left foot from 20 yards but the strike never comes. The referee blows up and awards the free-kick Chelsea's way.

It could have been for the shove on Gary Cahill or the handball that follows shortly after. Either way, bang to rights.

Aged 18, the striker has come through the Old Trafford ranks and scored twice on his debut last season in a 3-1 Premier League win over Hull.

Last season he scored for United's under-18s, 19s, 21s and seniors and has earned praise from Ryan Giggs, who handed him his debut while in charge at the end of last season.

"He is a natural goalscorer but he has got more to his game than that. He can run at people, he has got pace and he is a clever player," Giggs said.

He made his first appearance under Louis van Gaal in the 4-0 defeat at MK Dons and also came on as a substitute against Everton earlier this month.

Phil Keane:, external Marouane Fellaini is twice the player Daley Blind is. Now that's saying something.

Henry Tunde Okoro:, external Nemanja Matic has to be Chelsea's real man of the match. He has put his body on the line to stop every shot and tackle that has come across him.

Matt Congreve:, external Almost £250m spent in transfers on Manchester United's starting XI alone. To have 12 points from a possible 27 is poor.

"I wouldn't say Chelsea have been brilliant but they have been excellent at keeping their shape and have broken with pace. This team could win the league by six, seven, eight or nine points if they really wanted to. We said before the game it would be difficult for them to go unbeaten all season but on this evidence I think they could."

    Suddenly United stir into life.

Robin van Persie cleverly allows the ball across his body to get a yard clear off Gary Cahill and brings a good save out of Thibaut Courtois with a solid strike.

Adnan Januzaj then scoots in off the right wing and screws a shot wide, James Wilson heads over the top and, with 10 minutes left, there is a bit of momentum for the home fans.

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford

"Nothing by way of serious reply from United so far as Chelsea look comfortable in defence and in possession.

"Robin van Persie, who played an inglorious part in Chelsea's goal, needs to find the old spark from somewhere with United missing the suspended Wayne Rooney and injured Radamel Falcao.

"Mourinho has also introduced his trademark insurance policy, substitute Jon Obi Mikel, as first part of operation lockdown."

Marouane Fellaini tugs the sleeve of Belgian team-mate Eden Hazard and he has his name taken by Phil Dowd.

"Chelsea have not got Diego Costa today either, so you cannot make the excuse that Manchester United are without Radamel Falcao and Wayne Rooney.

"I did say before today's match that if there was one thing United fans could expect it would be excitement from their side. But I have to say I have been very disappointed. And the way they have defended at times. You just expect more. If United are beaten today, after spending the amount of money they have, that is totally unacceptable."

The Chelsea defence hunt like piranhas, surging in in numbers as soon as they sense danger.

Robin van Persie is swamped by blue shirts as he receives the ball on the edge of the area and his effort at goal inevitably thumps into one of the visitors.

Willian hammers just wide and right now it is Chelsea who are the more likely scorers.

Old Trafford is a little down-hearted. Fighting back against West Brom is one thing, will Chelsea leave themselves open to a late leveller in the same way?

Branislav Ivanovic could have won it there. And what a goal it would have been.

The Serb reveals some previously unheard-of snake-hips to weave through the United defence. His run takes him to near the byline, but his low drilled shot, beats David De Gea and is only a whisker outside the far post.

  17. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 17:28 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

The two managers play their first substitution cards at the same time.

Jose Mourinho replaces Oscar with Jon Obi Mikel to bung up midfield.

Louis Van Gaal injects James Wilson into the United attack, replacing Juan Mata.

A disappointing delivery from Angel Di Maria who has not got out of third gear yet today.

Rian Hoskins:, external While he is four years past his best, Didier Drogba still has supreme aerial ability, particularly with headers. Always a Chelsea legend.

Brett Mills:, external Drogba could be 90 years old and Rafael would've been the wrong person to mark him. What awful defending!

Charles Fairweather:, external Drogba I'm sorry I thought you were too old. Take me back?

  20. YELLOW CARDpublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

Angel Di Maria has swapped onto the left flank, sending Adnan Januzaj over the other side.

It might pay immediate dividends. He runs at Branislav Ivanovic, drawing a foul and ensuring the Serb gets his team's fifth yellow.

It is a dangerous spot for a set-piece as well...
