Let's talk about Wales. They were pretty good against Bosnia on Friday, when they held the World Cup finalists to a draw, and now they have a great chance to extend their lead at the top of Group B.

And all this amidst a real injury crisis. Manager Chris Coleman has 11 players missing through injury tonight. It's a good job Gareth Bale is not one of that eye-watering number.

  2. Sterling's decision 'brave'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 13 October 2014

So what do you think about Sterling's decision to ask to be rested? According to one sports psychologist BBC Sport's Joe Lynskey contacted today, it's a "brave" decision.

"To see this athlete acknowledge he would struggle to make an impact is a very brave move," Birmingham University's Dr Jennifer Cumming said.

    The full story is here.

  3. Hodgson on Sterlingpublished at 19:02 British Summer Time 13 October 2014

England manager Roy Hodgson has his own theory on Raheem Sterling: "He broke into the Liverpool team, had a fantastic season and then went to the World Cup. He is only 19 years old.

"It is not as simple as the training you are having may be taking a bit of juice from your legs.

"There is an awful lot going on in your head as well, so perhaps it is quite simply that the season has not started as well for Liverpool, and he is in the spotlight for England and Liverpool. Maybe that has had some effect. I don't know. It's a theory."

We'll get on to previewing Wales v Cyprus shortly, but first let's recap on some of the fall-out from England's 1-0 victory in Estonia last night.

There's been plenty said and written about Raheem Sterling's exclusion from the starting line-up because of fatigue, and the Liverpool forward has been supported by ex-England captain Rio Ferdinand.

Speaking on Twitter, Ferdinand said:, external "Fair play to him. English players are normally too proud to do that unlike our foreign friends.

"(Carlos) Tevez would come in some days and sit on the massage bed while the team trained. "I'm tired"... match day - firing and energised.

"With more rest at the right times throughout seasons, Rooney would have gone into tournaments for England fresher 100%. Too proud again. Same could be said of Gerrard, (Frank) Lampard, John Terry, Ashley Cole myself etc - all too proud to sit out of training or a match with the bigger picture in mind."

Group B leaders Wales make one enforced change from Friday's 0-0 draw against Bosnia, with Hal Robson-Kanu replacing the injured Jonathan Williams.

There is also a tactical change, with Tottenham left-back Ben Davies making way for young Fulham winger George Williams.

Wales manager Chris Coleman has tinkered with his formation as a result, switching from the 5-3-2 he used against Bosnia to a 4-2-3-1 where Gareth Bale will support lone striker Simon Church.

Elsewhere in the world, Luis Suarez struck his first goals since being suspended for biting as Uruguay beat Oman 3-0 in a friendly in Sohar this afternoon.

The 27-year-old Barcelona forward is serving a nine-match international ban and four-month total football suspension for having bitten Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup. However, his ban does not include friendly matches.

He notched a brace in the Celeste's victory while midfielder Jonathan Rodriguez added the third.

Can Baley and the boys do what Big Nev, Giggsy and Nathan Blake couldn't?

Ah, Nathan Blake? What's he doing with his time these days?

Well, former Wales striker Blake is now an award-winning actor for his role in short film The Homing Bird, in which he plays a football coach.

Whatever next? Big Neville Southall winning an Oscar? Never rule these things out...

Yep, this current Wales crop might finally be able to emulate the heroes of 1958 because they once again possess a world-class talent in their ranks. For John Charles, read Gareth Bale.

And it's so far so good for the boys in red. They have taken four points from their first two games in qualifying for Euro 2016 and currently top Group B. Beat Cyprus in Cardiff tonight and it's their best start to a campaign in more than a decade.

    Are the stars finally aligning?

So, the question is simple. Can Wales finally qualify for a major tournament for the first time since four lads from Liverpool were embarking on global domination?

For the first time since the King of Rock and Roll was on a rapid ascent to his throne?

And for the first time since clubs on the Continent were clamouring for the signature of a supremely gifted footballer from the valleys...

  14. Back in the summer of... 58!published at 18:20 British Summer Time 13 October 2014

Ah, the summer of 1958. Halcyon days, or so I am told.

The Beatles, then known as The Quarrymen, were just starting out - paying 17 shillings and 6 pence for the privilege of their first recording session on 19 July.

Meanwhile, UK nightclubs - or were they called discotheques back then? - were turning up the volume to hits such as Jailhouse Rock (Elvis Presley) and Great Balls of Fire (Jerry Lee Lewis).

Oh, and Wales were competing in a major football competition for the only time in their history - a young whippersnapper named Pele denying them glory at the World Cup in Sweden.

And those who were around saw all of this in black and white. Halcyon days indeed.
