A few more words from Neil Warnock before we sign off: "I am just deflated at the moment. I just want to talk about my team. In 35 seconds they could have been down to 10 men. Decisions change games. We want consistency, we want top class referees to get top class decisions right. It is not happening for us at the moment.

"I was told we should appeal for penalties a lot more. But why should we have to appeal? If someone kicks your shin they should be given. I don't understand what is going off at the moment but we just have to keep going."

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet on Sky Sports: "The win means a lot, more than anyone can think. It was a difficult couple of weeks, where it looked like everything we had done earlier in the season was thrown away. Sometimes it is not about playing nice, it is about the basics.

"I didn't know if it was a penalty or not, but after seeing Mr Warnock talking to people and information from the top, maybe you think we were lucky for once, it was time. It was a difficult situation for the referee, it was the beginning of the game, a long flick forward.

"Fletch has been outstanding after a little spell out of team, he came back really strong showing why he is so important for us, and it is every day, In training, he was quick, fast, linking well, on fire in the shooting sessions."

More from Sunderland boss Gus Poyet: "Sunderland know how to play ugly. They know sometimes not to try and overplay. After the goal we got better, we passed the ball better and created more chances. We showed the understanding of how to win the game.

"This result is a confirmation that I knew we were better than the Southampton game. We feel like we are a proper team today.

"I couldn't believe we scored another own goal. Wes Brown could not believe it himself. I don't know if you can train that out of players but we need to get back to basics."

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet, speaking to BBC Sport: "I am pleased because it was a day that was all about winning, fighting, playing ugly when you have to and pass when you have to. We scored three goals but Julian Speroni made a couple of good saves as well.

"We were a little stronger going forward and believed in creating chances. We got lucky, because I think probably the penalty at the beginning looks like it was.

"It was tough [for Palace]. The first minute of the game. Everyone told me it was a penalty, I didn't see it but sometimes you need a bit of luck."

More from Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock: "I thought we started the second half really well but it is a cruel game sometimes.

"We are down tonight but we have to go again tomorrow. We are distraught tonight, everyone is asking why we don't get decisions and nobody seems to know.

"We go to Old Trafford next and everyone is expecting us to get battered, but we will pick ourselves up for it."

  9. Manager reactionpublished at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2014

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is a cruel game football. We have ended up losing 3-1 which on paper looks a poor defeat but I can't fault the lads tonight but decisions change games.

"You don't get a clearer penalty that Fraizer Campbell's. The referee was in a good position but he said he didn't see it and I find it very difficult how he did not see that. To say we are not getting decisions is an understatement.

"What can you say to them? They go to another game Saturday and they will not worry about Palace. There are too many mistakes. You have to give penalties, you have to be brave to give penalties and they don't seem to be doing that at the moment."

Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher, who scored twice, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a great performance from us with the past two games we had. We are glad we got the three points and put in the performance as well. I had three chances and took two of them so I am happy with that.

"Luck has not been going our way so when the own goal went in the heads went down and Palace got on top but we picked up again. The manager will be delighted. Everyone wanted a reaction. We have a massive game next week [against Everton] so we will go into that with confidence."

Sunderland leap up to 15th with that win and onto 11 points, just three behind seventh-place Liverpool. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, drop to 17th and are outside the relegation zone on goal difference. Things look a lot rosier for Sunderland now, but Palace fans might be looking over their shoulders a bit after a fourth game without a win.

"It has been a good and interesting night of football. I have enjoyed it but at times the quality has been sadly lacking.

"I thought Sunderland put in a professional performance. They did not come here and amaze - both teams under-performed in possession - but they stuck in the game, maintained their shape and were very clinical in front of goal."
