"Is that a shot? It's gone out of play 20 yards up the pitch. For Sunderland, Connor Wickham now looks like he's playing as an out and out striker. It's as though Gus Poyet has looked at it and thought 'yeah, we might as well have a go'."

Tremendously poor shot from Yannick Bolasie, and one the Crystal Palace midfielder will want to forget it in a hurry as not only does it go wide, it goes out for a thrown-in. Deary me.

"I always marvel at Sunderland's away support. I once went to a match at Southend's Roots Hall on a Tuesday night, in thick fog, and Sunderland took over. Even though their fans couldn't see a thing because of the fog."

It's not quite the sort of atmosphere that would keep Jose Mourinho happy, but the Sunderland fans are certainly making themselves known.

Despite a pretty arduous four hour journey down the M1, they are in good voice and with good reason. Sunderland have not conceded yet...

Pete: Hats off to all Sunderland supporters at the game tonight..8 nil defeat in the last away game, not won at palace for 19 years, not won on a monday for 12 years and an arduous journey to selhurst park for an evening kick off

From Al, bored on train to Birmingham: Sleep easy folks, Defensa y Justicia's game has been called off. Apparently unhappy about the lack of a live feed!

Despite that early penalty scare Sunderland fans can be pretty happy with their side's showing so far. Crystal Palace are seeing more of the ball, but the away side are certainly getting stuck in and doing their best to disrupt the home side's play.

Pretty open game but no real chances for either side yet.

"I'm sure there are a few Sunderland fans who shudder every time I mention Santiago Vergini. It's not just that penalty shout early on - there's been a few things this season. He actually looks like he could be a good player but, for whatever reason, it's not happening for him."

"Every time I watch Lee Cattermole, I think he would have been a perfect player... 20 years ago."

Santiago Vergini heads away a Palace free-kick after a Lee Cattermole foul. Standard. Palace win another free-kick soon after, again just inside the Sunderland half, but Joel Ward's ball into the box is headed away by Patrick van Aanholt. Lively, but also niggly, game so far.

Joel Ward lofts a free-kick from just inside the Sunderland half into the area but Black Cats keeper Costel Pantilimon charges through a crowd of players and leaps to catch confidently. Easy catch, but taking command of his area early on can only help give his team-mates confidence.

Joel Ward brings down Will Buckley in a decent position for the visitors, just outside the D. Jordi Gomez takes the free-kick, but smashes the ball into the Palace wall and the chance is gone.

BBC Sport's Steve Claridge at Selhurst Park

"Crystal Palace have gone 4-4-2, which bucks the trend really. It's nice and positive and they look well balanced in midfield. The two wide players are doing well and Wilfried Zaha has just got past his marker with ease so that's a good sign for him."

It is an uncomfortable start for Sunderland at the moment as they struggle to get the ball off Crystal Palace. They look a little rattled after that early attack and penalty appeal.

"It looked like a penalty to me. Fraizer Campbell touched the ball and Santiago Vergini got nowhere near it. Neil Warnock and Garry Monk must be wondering what they have done wrong. It was a penalty."

  18. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2014

A lucky escape for Sunderland already?

Marouane Chamakh hoofs a ball up field for Fraizer Campbell to chase. The former Sunderland striker races into the area and looks to be fouled by Santiago Vergini. Nothing given and Neil Warnock shakes his head in disappointment.
