West Brom manager Alan Irvine, speaking to BBC Sport: "I've got complaints about how we played but the result was fair enough. It could have gone either way for a while. Newcastle started well, then we had a good spell and looked to be doing OK but the goal just before half-time put a different complexion on the mood in the two dressing rooms.

"When the second went in, it was a long way back for us. We knew it would be difficult - Newcastle make it hard for teams to create chances. We knew we needed good movement but we didn't have enough of that. It was the first game in which the players have not performed to the levels they have shown. Nobody goes out to play poorly but it just didn't happen for us today and now we have to look for the reasons why.

"It was Saido's poorest game of the season but he'll bounce back from that."

  3. Manager reactionpublished at 15:51 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2014

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes: "I was really pleased with what we produced today. From start to finish we were the more accomplished side. We were always a threat on the break and had great ability in forward areas. They got one back with a great strike but I always felt there were more goals in us.

"Bojan was doing what he did in pre-season. At the start of the season it was a bit of a shock to him in the Premier League. We just had to bide our time a bit but he is ready now and the quality of his goal shows the technical ability he has.

"I was upset initially [with the referee] because it seemed the referee was pulling us up after 20 minutes of the game trying to make out we were using time up but that was not the case. We were trying to play it out from the back."

Stuart Duggan:, external I still don't feel I've had a decent explanation of why Spurs got rid of Harry Redknapp, a manager who was taking us to the top.

Mehzeb Chowdury:, external I'm buying www.keeppardew.com right now! What a turnaround!

Akhil Sakaria:, external Wonder if Arsenal fans feel as bad seeing Per Mertesacker and Nacho Monreal at centre-back as we do seeing Younes Kaboul and Federico Fazio.

Jonny, London: Alongside Danny Rose [see 15:28] I would expect Mauricio Pochettino also needs an oxygen face-mask after that performance. Selling Michael Dawson for £3.5m seems ludicrous in retrospect now.

    Ayoze PerezImage source, AP

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, talking to BBC Sport: "It was a very disciplined, strong performance which was highlighted by an outstanding goal from Ayoze Perez. You need special moments like that in the Premier League. We were a bit frustrated that we had not played as well as we could offensively in the first half, but the team is well balanced. We have good width in the team and our system is proving difficult for the opposition."

On Ayoze Perez's backheel: "That type of goal, you usually take the pace off the cross and guide it in but he actually added pace to it. He struggled with the physicality of Joleon Lescott and Craig Dawson today but he'll get better as we go on.

"Our young players in particular have been massive for us. We've lost key players to injury and the youngsters have been superb. I couldn't be more pleased."

  9. Player reactionpublished at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2014

Stoke goalscorer Jon Walters: "I am made up. We ground it out today and three points were all that mattered.

"Bojan finds little pockets, it is not just his play on the ball but also his work off it. He put himself about today really well and stopped them from playing through us."

  10. Manager reactionpublished at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2014

Everton manager Roberto Martinez: "Any point is a good point. it's a positive result, we showed incredible response and character to going 1-0 down.

"Maybe we didn't shown enough intent in the final third. Sunderland were effective from dead balls, but I was disappointed a penalty did not follow a with a red card for Connor Wickham.

"One thing is whether you agree with the law or not, it's a clear penalty and it should be a red card. There's no argument. The law is very clear, it should have been a red card.

"It would've been a long time to play with 10 men. Maybe that would have changed the game."

On the injury to Gareth Barry:

"He's gone straight to hospital for an x-ray to see the extent of the injury. We are hoping to hear the best."

That's five wins in a row in all competitions for Newcastle. What's made the difference?

Do the club deserve credit for sticking with Alan Pardew? Has he been lucky? Has Ayoze Perez been the man?

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew: "It was a really professional and disciplined performance. They stuck to the gameplan and the players are carrying it out to the letter. But you still need moments to inspire and the first goal was really special and worthy of winning any game.

On Perez's goal: "We see it in training so it's no surprise. The strength of the team is our spine - Sissoko, Colback, Coloccini, Dummett and Krul - but the whole team played well today. We are up the league where a club of this size should be. We've been very simple in what we've done in terms of our goals, we've kept them realistic."

Rikki: Just left the Lane. Spurs were so bad they turned the music up at the final whistle to drown out the boos!

Zoe: Don't understand why Younes Kaboul was given the captaincy. No voice, no passion from him or any of the players it seems. Such a lacklustre, sloppy performance. Defence looks like they don't know where they are most of the time. Actually think my village team who play on the local park would beat Spurs easily at the moment!

Caine, Stafford: Another good performance by Ryan Shawcross. Still baffles me how he doesn't get a look in ahead of the likes of Chris Smalling. Was Roy Hodgson at White Hart Lane today? Doubt it!

  14. Player reactionpublished at 15:34 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2014

Sunderland goalscorer Seb Larsson: "We have said for the last couple of games we are back to basics. We know Everton are a good team, it was a tough game, a physical game but we kept them at bay.

"I felt it was tight all the way through. At 1-0 we were trying to hang on and get the win but I suppose it is a fair result."

  15. 'Like watching a relegation-threatened side'published at 15:32 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2014

    James Scowcroft
BBC Radio London summariser at White Hart Lane

"If I was a Spurs fan I would be exceptionally worried. They were second best all over the park today, that's no exaggeration. There were no leaders at all for Tottenham and the only time Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic was tested all game was from set plays, from open play there was no invention.

"Watching that was almost like watching a relegation-threatened side. If Chelsea were to come here on that performance, you'd expect them to score five or six."

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson
BBC Radio 5 live at the Stadium of Light

"It was a strange game. In all honestly Everton had the better quality but they couldn't use it to beat Sunderland. I think they would have settled for an away point, and Sunderland have four points in their last two games now.

"Towards the end of the match Everton, under all sorts of pressure, were just winding the game down. James McCarthy saved them with a brilliant flick over the line [see 15:22] when Tim Howard was beaten."
