  1. Post update

There is plenty of Champions League action still to come tomorrow with Arsenal at home to Monaco and La Liga champions Atletico Madrid at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

We will be live with our text commentary from 18:00 GMT but, before that, you can get all the reaction from tonight's action in Sportsday Live on the BBC Sport website from 08:00 GMT tomorrow.

Until then, cheerio. It has been a pleasure.

  2. PLAYER REACTION

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta: "We feel like we've taken a big step tonight, but it isn't over yet."

  3. Nasri out of sorts

    Nasri

I think it's fair to say Samir Nasri (touch map above) struggled to get into the game this evening. He only made 31 touches, the least of any of the starting outfield players for either side. Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Andres Iniesta all had over 100 for Barcelona.

  4. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"I know the object was to attack Barcelona but maybe if you'd played three on three in midfield, you can press a bit higher. I've always said 4-4-2 is a hard-working system and if you don't put a shift in, it doesn't work."

  5. Clinical Suarez

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Luis Suarez

Pretty lethal stuff from Luis Suarez in attack for Barcelona this evening. His touch graphic above shows he only had seven touches inside the penalty area and scored twice. He also had plenty of joy down the left.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero on Twitter: It's not the result we wanted but the tie is still unfinished. And as usual we'll fight 'til the end. C'mon, City!

  8. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    BBC Radio 5 live

Henry Winter, of the Daily Telegraph, on the BBC 5 live Football Social: "I'm not convinced Manchester City go there [to the Nou Camp] with too much hope. They were better in the second half but I didn't think the Dzeko experiment worked and I thought Fernando was poor.

"Manchester City fans are walking out disconsolate, but look at the front line Barcelona threw at them. You have to respect Barcelona as well as highlighting City's flaws."

  9. MANAGER REACTION

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique confirms in his post-match press conference that Lionel Messi will continue as penalty-taker, despite his stoppage-time miss against Manchester City.

  10. All to play for

    Champions League

A reminder how both Champions League matches went this evening. Advantage Juventus and Barcelona but there is still everything to play for in both matches.

  11. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

All four Champions league games in which Lionel Messi has completed 10+ dribbles have come against English teams - Man Utd 2x, Arsenal, and now Man City.

Leo must love playing the English...

QPR striker Charlie Austin: Suarez is so clever.

Hull midfielder David Meyler: Messi needs to work on his diving headers!

  13. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

On Luis Suarez: "He's a proper team player. He's matured fantastically. He scored two and could have had more. At Liverpool he was on fire. He doesn't get the ball as much at Barcelona but maybe that suits him a little bit."

  14. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

DavGaddu: Hilarious that pundits are praising City for their second half showing. Barca clearly had no need to play at 100% after 0-2.

Zak Harding: Credit to Man City for the effort in the second half but overall they were outclassed and I can't see then going through.

  15. Magical Messi

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Barcelona

A busy evening for Lionel Messi as his touch graphic shows above. Bar his missed penalty, the Argentine was sublime.

  16. Suarez is Hart-less

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Joe Hart

Joe Hart will be sick of the sight of Luis Suarez.

The Barcelona striker scored twice for Uruguay against England in the World Cup and then repeated his brace against Manchester City tonight. He will fancy more goals in the Nou Camp too.

  17. Text us on 81111

James: Stop bashing City, even as a United fan, I can't deny City were oustanding in the second half. Could have been two or three.

Sam, Manchester: Very pleased with the second-half performance. Suarez for lucky with his first goal ricochet off Kompany. Clichy didn't deserve two yellow cards they were hardly malicious tackles. Zabaleta and Demichelis was excellent today. With Yaya back in the second league, bring it on! C'mon City!

  18. Football League update

All over in tonight's Football League games and it's as you were at the top of the Championship. Leaders Derby beat Charlton 2-0, while second-placed Middlesbrough were 1-0 winners over Bolton. There were also victories for third-placed Ipswich, fifth-placed Norwich and sixth-placed Watford.

At the bottom, it was also business as usual - with defeats for bottom three Millwall, Wigan - who lost 1-0 to manager Malky Mackay's former club Cardiff - and Blackpool - who were on the receiving end of a incredible 42 shots in their 4-0 loss to Brentford.

In League One, Bristol City extended their lead to five points with a 3-1 win at Doncaster. Third-placed Swindon ended Bradford's seven-game unbeaten run, with Massimo Luongo netting twice in a 2-1 win.

It was League Two that provided the upset of the night, with leaders Burton beaten 1-0 by Accrington.

You can get the latest reaction on our dedicated Football League live text, which is ongoing.

  19. Player reaction

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Barcelona goalscorer Luis Suarez, speaking to ITV: "I try every game for the team and with both goals I am happy."

Do City have a chance at 2-1? "I think so. If they lost the game 3-1 that is really difficult for them but 2-1 is a good result for them."

    Short and sweet there.

  20. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Aguero and Dzeko, from the off, didn't pressurise people. Nasri got subbed and Silva didn't have the legs. If you're going to play 4-4-2, you've got to hound the ball. They didn't do that and in the first half, Barcelona just did whatever they wanted with the ball."

  21. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Stats

Barcelona dominated possession but, huge credit to City, they came back at their visitors in the second half to give themselves half a chance. A Luis Suarez brace, a sending off, a missed penalty and a Sergio Aguero strike - a good night's entertainment.

  22. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

On Samir Nasri walking straight down the tunnel after being substituted: "It's not good. The fans see it. Manuel Pellegrini speaks his mind so we'll see what his says about that.

"Before the game, Nasri had refused to compare himself to Andres Iniesta and he was right. Tonight, he was more like a Ford Fiesta."

  23. Player reaction

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Man City keeper Joe Hart

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, speaking to ITV: "I hope so [that the penalty save could prove crucial]. We will go there with a great group of fans, belief and we will have a right go.

"We pressed until the first goal and panicked a bit. We regrouped second half, put a lot of pressure on and were good for our goal and maybe good for a result tonight.

"The occasion did not get to us, sometimes things go against you. It is 2-1 and we go there with belief.

"Luis Suarez is a fantastic player, he took his goal well."

  26. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

There has been plenty of chat that Luis Suarez hasn't been firing since moving to Barcelona. Okay, he may not be the kingpin these days, with the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar alongside him but he is still some player. His two goals leave City with a huge job on their hands in the Nou Camp in a few weeks time.

  28. Post update

Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona - Sergio Aguero

    Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Give credit to City, they stuck at it and held on for 2-1. Overall, you have to say Barcelona are far superior to City.

"They've been made to look quite average in the first half. They showed grit and determination and got them a goal to keep them in the tie but they will have to play very well in the second leg to have any chance.

"Messi will be absolutely devastated with his penalty miss. He's a perfectionist."

    Joe Hart
  29. FULL-TIME

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

The final whistle sounds as Lionel Messi still has his head in his hands. Advantage Barcelona but it could have been so, so much worse for Manchester City. We still have a game on our hands in Spain.

  30. PENALTY SAVED

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Manchester City still have hope. Lionel Messi steps up, gives the goalkeeper the eyes and has his low penalty saved by Joe Hart to his left. The ball is parried straight back to Messi who, with a open goal gaping, sends a diving header wide. He is human.

    Lionel Messi
  31. PENALTY FOR BARCELONA

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

In the dying seconds Pablo Zabaleta needlessly chops down Lionel Messi in the penalty area.

  32. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Keep ball from Barcelona. Is there time for another chance?

  33. DISALLOWED GOAL

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Lionel Messi delicately chips the ball over Joe Hart and into the net but he is marginally offside. Lovely finish though. Three minutes of injury time.

  34. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

The ball is bobbling around Barcelona's area but it is hacked clear and Barca now have a free kick at the halfway line.

  35. YELLOW CARD

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

  37. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

That sending off has killed the atmosphere at Etihad just when it looked as though we were going to get a ripsnorter of a last 20 minutes. Barcelona are coasting through the last few minutes and City look as though they are happy with the score as it is - well as happy as they can be.

  38. Football League update

It's a humdinger at Ipswich! Mick McCarthy's side restored their two-goal lead against Birmingham, thanks to Freddie Sears's second goal, but David Davis has just pulled one back again for Birmingham, who now trail 2-1.

Huddersfield are cruising against Reading - they are 3-0 up thanks to second-half goals from Nahki Wells and Ishamel Miller. Millwall have been unable to take advantage of bad nights for their relegation rivals - they are losing 2-0 to Sheffield Wednesday, Lewis McGugan and Atdhe Nuhiu on target for the visitors.

League One leaders Bristol City are heading for victory - Aaron Wilbraham has put them 3-1 up at Doncaster.

  40. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Barcelona are still looking the more likely to add another. Substitute Adriano has a shot blocked from 20 yards. The yellow shirts know another goal and it is almost job done.

  41. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Against 10 men, Barcelona should be be thinking about going for another goal. They're just passing it around at the moment but another goal would surely kill the tie."

  42. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Man City manager Manuel Pellegrini

Robert Thompson: City can have no complaints with that red card, Clichy has been a liability. Miles off the pace.

Ross Bentley: English teams always get red cards in big European games.

Ieuan Yusuf-George: Two very soft bookings for Clichy. Mistimed tackles but neither malicious or reckless. Lack of common sense from the ref.

  44. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Maybe Dani Alves was fit enough to continue. He certainly didn't seem to happy at being withdrawn as he smashes a drinking bottle into smithereens with his foot.

Neymar is replaced by a more defensive Pedro on the right of the attack and he takes his substitution a whole lot better.

  45. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Gael Clichy's red card means City have had a player sent off in their last three meetings with Barcelona after Martin Demichelis and Pablo Zabaleta were sent off in each leg of last season's Champions League clash with Barca.

  46. SUBSTITUTION

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Barcelona are back on top.

The inevitable defensive move from Manuel Pellegrini as midfielder David Silva is withdrawn and Bacary Sagna is brought on to fill in at left back for the sent off Gael Clichy. You can't help but feel the 10-man hosts would take a 2-1 defeat now.

Helles Mammut: Nice consolation goal but to have a realistic chance to advance City need to score two or three more in this half.

Toby Foot: Barca have been sloppy fighting for second balls in past 10 minutes, City have been wanting that goal and rightfully get it.

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Just as City thought they were getting into it... A clumsy challenge from Clichy and the referee had no option. It's a shame because it looked like they were getting back into it."

  49. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Dani Alves can't continue after Gael Clichy's tackle and is replaced by Adriano on the right.

Brilliant defending from Pablo Zabaleta stops Jordi Alba from making it 3-1. The Spaniard is about to shoot with just Joe Hart to beat when Zabaleta flies through the air to toe-end the ball away

  50. RED CARD - Gael Clichy

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

    Maybe not then.

Just when City started to push, more hesitancy from Gael Clichy leaves them up against it once more. The defender is too slow and clatters Dani Alves in the knee. Clear booking - his second of the game - and he is out of there.

    Gael Clichy
  51. Post update

    Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

City are pushing now. The fans believe, the players believe and Barcelona might to be starting to doubt themselves. Less than 20 minutes remaining but this is very much game on.

  52. Post update

Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona - Sergio Aguero

    Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at Etihad Stadium

"Hope at last for Manchester City and reward for a second half performance that has at least shown some ambition. They have shown Barcelona's defence to be vulnerable under pressure - now can they do it again?"

  54. GOAL

Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona - Sergio Aguero - 69 mins

Sergio Aguero scores for Man City

A lifeline. Vital? It was a cracking finish from the impressive Sergio Aguero, who collects an inventive, defence-opening backheel from David Silva before smashing his shot past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Wolves are also 3-0 up - Bakary Sako has got two of their goals against Fulham. Ipswich now lead Birmingham 2-1 - Freddie Sears scored for the Tractor Boys but David Davis has just pegged them back again.

Ivan Rakitic is presented half a chance but lifts the ball over the bar. Lionel Messi then pulls the ball out of the air with one touch, lays it back and Rakitic is crowded out.

  59. Post update

    Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona

    Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Nasri won't be happy to be subbed off but he's not had an influence. He's not contributed enough. He's straight down the tunnel and spat his dummy out a little bit."

  60. SUBSTITUTION

    Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona

Midfielder Fernandinho is coming on for Samir Nasri as manager Manuel Pellegrini looks to be opting for some more steel. James Milner will take Samir Nasri's place on the right, allowing the sub to slot in alongside Fernando.

  70. CLOSE!

    Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona

City are gathering up a head of steam. Edin Dzeko finds David Silva in the penalty box, he pulls it back to Samir Nasri but his goalbound shot is blocked by Javier Mascherano.

A corner is forced, Vincent Kompany flicks on to find Dzeko is acres of space just yards from goal. Anywhere apart from at the goalkeeper and that is a goal but his header is into the hands of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Where does Manuel Pellegrini go from here? Barcelona's two-goal lead barely does justice to how superior they have been. Vincent Kompany has been taken to the cleaners by Luis Suarez, City are ineffective in midfield and once again Pellegrini's ploy of playing two up front against world-class opposition has been brutally exposed.

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Barca been outstanding and dominated from kick-off. City have to got to look after the ball better. You're talking about the best team in England and they can't put four or five passes together."

  83. Football League update

Normal service in the Championship. Leaders Derby lead Charlton 2-0 at half-time, while second-placed Middlesbrough have stepped up the chase with a goal against Bolton - Albert Adomah putting them 1-0 up. Fourth-placed Ipswich also lead, courtesy of Tyrone Mings' header against Birmingham.

Bottom two clubs Blackpool and Wigan are both losing, while Millwall, who occupy the other relegation place, are holding Sheffield Wednesday 0-0.

In League One, leaders Bristol City are 2-0 up on Doncaster, Greg Cunningham adding the second from the spot. Swindon look set to end Bradford's unbeaten run - they lead 2-0 thanks to Massimo Luongo's brace.

It's not all going to form though - in League Two, Josh Windass has put Accrington 1-0 up against leaders Burton.

  84. HALF-TIME

    Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona

That is about as comprehensive a first half as you can get from Barcelona. They have been better in just about every area of the pitch.

After watching City hammer Newcastle at the weekend, I can't help but wonder what this Barca side would do to the rest of the Premier League. Simply awesome.

  85. CLOSE!

    Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona

City's first real chance of the match as David Silva feeds Samir Nasri on the edge of the penalty area but his curled side-footed shot is easy for goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to parry away. A shot on goal at least.

  86. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona

Some shocking defending almost sees Barcelona 3-0 up. The ball cannons off James Milner to set Dani Alves racing through on goal. The Brazilian looks up and chips the advancing Joe Hart but the woodwork saves City.

  87. GOAL

Juventus 2-1 Borussia Dortmund - Alvaro Morata (43 mins)

Tevez to Pogba to Morata - goal. Who needs possession? Dortmund were pulled apart like a Christmas cracker. Tevez, bull-like, feeds Pogba in a wide area and his left-foot cross is low and tantalisingly too good for the away defence as Morata applies a side-foot finish from 10 yards. He is unmarked but onside.

City finally enjoy some pressure as Barcelona struggle to clear. Edin Dzeko has a shot from 20 yards blocked as the home fans start to raise their voices again. 'Come on City' is the cry'. Well it is until Gael Clichy sends a woeful cross over the goal from the left.

Luis Suarez proving once again why so many Premier League defenders would have happily waved him on the plane to Barcelona when he left Liverpool. The visitors are running riot. Neymar plays a perfectly-weighted pass for Lionel Messi but, after a decent touch inside the penalty area, Joe Hart bravely gets down to smother.

  95. Football League update

No respite for Blackpool at the bottom of the Championship. Two Jon Toral goals in three minutes have put them 2-0 down at Brentford and staring at defeat number 19 of the season.

In the night's big grudge match, it's Cardiff who have taken the lead at Wigan through Aron Gunnarsson - bad news for Latics boss Malky Mackay, who left Cardiff in acrimonious circumstances. The Cardiff board are reportedly boycotting that match in protest at alleged racism at Wigan.

In League One, it's going with the formbook - Swindon, Preston and Sheffield United, who occupy third, fourth and fifth place in the table, are all 1-0 up after half an hour.

  106. Football League update

The first goal of the night in the Football League went the way of Championship leaders Derby. They took the lead against Charlton thanks to a close-range left-footed effort from Jeff Hendrick after nine minutes, and Jesse Lingard has just made it 2-0.

Huddersfield have also made a good start in their mid-table clash against Reading - Harry Bunn has given the Terriers the early advantage in that one with a header.

And Derby aren't the only table-toppers who have made a lightning start - League One leaders Bristol City are 1-0 up, courtesy of Luke Freeman's early strike against Doncaster.

Third-placed Swindon can close the gap on Dons to two points, but to do so they must overcome in-form Bradford, who are unbeaten in their last seven games.

The leaders are also in action in League Two - Burton visit Accrington knowing victory would extend their lead to five points.

  150. Missing Yaya

Manchester City v Barcelona (19:45 GMT)

    Yaya Toure

The main concern for Manchester City tonight is the absence of Yaya Toure.

The midfielder is serving the final match of this three-game European suspension after being sent off against CSKA Moscow in November.

City's win percentage with Toure in the side is 40%, compared to 36% without him. However, without him they become a difficult team to break down having avoided defeat in nine of the 11 games he has not played, with almost half of those games ending in draws.

Frank Lampard is in no doubt about the importance of the Champions League to Manchester City.

He told City's website: "This is a trophy every big club needs in their collection and the way City are heading it is one that will happen at some point and these sorts of games are the ones you have to win if you are going to go on and win the competition."

"Goals from Lionel Messi and Dani Alves gave Barcelona victory here a year ago on the way to a 4-1 aggregate win - with manager Manuel Pellegrini furious about the performance of Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson.

Fiorentina's former Manchester City defender Micah Richards on Twitter: "City gone 4-4-2 tonight! Attack attack attack. Am going for a 1-1 draw... Come on City!"

  158. 'No clear favourites'

Manchester City v Barcelona (19:45 GMT)

Barcelona are not clear favourites to beat Manchester City and reach the Champions League quarter-finals, says coach Luis Enrique.

In a testy news conference at Etihad on Monday, the Barca boss faced a barrage of questions from the Spanish media about his side's morale after Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Malaga.

He didn't look too happy about the direction the questions were taking but did say there was no favourite this evening.

"It is dangerous to speak of favourites in the Champions League - you have to demonstrate yourself on the field," he said.

  159. Dortmund find their feet

Juventus v Borussia Dortmund (19:45 GMT)

    Jurgen Klopp

Borussia Dortmund's early-season dance with relegation attracted many column inches.

How could a side managed by the charismatic Jurgen Klopp be so bad? Well the spectacled character has guided his side up to 12th now, thanks in no small part to three straight league wins.

Form and momentum seem to be arriving at the right time.

"It will take a while before we find ourselves in a different situation in the Bundesliga," manager Jurgen Klopp said. "Until then, the pressure remains. The Champions League is a whole different story."

Keep tabs on their Champions League trip to Juventus on our separate live text from 19:30 GMT.

Paul Hirst, a reporter with the Press Association, at the Etihad Stadium on Twitter: "Forget Aguero, Messi, Suarez and Silva - the best footballer in Manchester tonight is in the press box. There's only one Chrissy Waddle."

Chris Waddle is, of course, part of the commentary team on BBC Radio 5 live, with build-up starting at 19:00 GMT.

Sam Roath: Messi, Suarez, Neymar. By far the best attacking trio in the world.

Harry Dickens: At international level, Messi and Aguero is an almost unstoppable pairing.

Liam Hammond: I quite like the look of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Matt Smith at Bristol City.

  166. The return of Suarez

Manchester City v Barcelona (19:45 GMT)

    Luis Suarez

As if there isn't enough to look forward to this evening...

Luis Suarez, the reigning player of the year in English football, will make his first appearance in England since his move from Liverpool in the summer for £75m.

He was made to wait in Spain, serving a four-month ban from football-related activity for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup, and hasn't really set La Liga on fire yet.

But you wouldn't bet against the Uruguayan making a big impact one way or another this evening. You can read about his first eight months in Spain here.

  167. Post update

Manchester City v Barcelona (19:45 GMT)

    Barcelona fans

BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko in Manchester: "The gusty wind might be biting cold in the city centre, but the atmosphere is starting to warm ahead of Manchester City's Champions League tie against Barcelona.

"A healthy throng of Catalans have arrived, most wrapped in thick overcoats, thermal hats and replica scarves, as they gather for a pint outside of one of Manchester's most historic pubs.

"Most fans I spoke to reckon their team will bounce back from a shock home defeat by Malaga and take an advantage back to the Camp Nou."

Arasa: RVP and Adebayor - led Arsenal well only for Van Persie to get injured. It dented AFC's hopes of winning the league.

RedViperofDorne: Diego Costa and Branislav Ivanovic are a pretty good strike partnership.

Duncan Radband: Has to be John Barnes and Luther Blissett.

  170. Tonight's Championship action

As if tonight's Champions League action wasn't enough to keep you entertained, there's also a packed programme of Football League fixtures.

The top two in the Championship are both in action, as Derby take on Charlton, with second-placed Middlesbrough hoping to make up ground with a win over Bolton.

The bottom three clubs are also in action, with Blackpool visiting Brentford, Wigan taking on Cardiff and Millwall up against Sheffield Wednesday.

Plenty of eyes will be on events at the DW Stadium in particular for a match that pits Wigan manager Malky Mackay against his former club. The Cardiff board are set to boycott the match in protest at Wigan's ownership and management.

You can follow all the action with our dedicated Football League live text here.

  172. Barcelona ease through

Manchester City v Barcelona (19:45 GMT)

Barcelona's progress from the group stages, on the other hand, was as smooth as silk.

The Catalans lost just one match - to Paris St-Germain - and qualified top of Group E.

Forget the past though, this is all about now.

  173. Champions League fight back

Manchester City v Barcelona (19:45 GMT)

    Manchester City

For many Manchester City fans, just their presence in the last-16 in the Champions League this season is a bonus.

They looked to be heading out of the competition after failing to win any of their first four games.

However, a 3-2 home win over German champions Bayern, which included a Sergio Aguero hat-trick, kept alive their hopes of making the last 16 - and they took full advantage with a stunning 2-0 win in Rome.

    Breathtaking stuff.

Steven Jerjian: Aguero is key man because if he's not on form then City will struggle badly. Barca can afford for Messi to be off the boil.

We're asking you for your favourite strike partnerships in world football. Here's a few early shouts...

Gasumba innocent: Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole were the best striking partnership for me.

Chris: Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore had a devastating partnership for Liverpool, loved them together.

Martin Lunt: Roy Race and Blackie Gray had everything, pace, goals, teamwork, everything.

  177. No fear

Manchester City v Barcelona (19:45 GMT)

Manchester City are not scared of Barcelona, says captain Vincent Kompany despite losing 4-1 on aggregate to them at the same stage last season.

"We want to play against them. You don't go in at this level fearing strikers," said the Belgium defender. "They're a special team with special players, but there's nothing new to worry us, it's a case of having the whole team at a very high level."

    Bold Vincent.

    Favourite strike pairings

There will be no shortage of attacking talent on show tonight. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar for Barcelona, while City could pair Wilfried Bony with Sergio Aguero.

That got me thinking about some striking partnerships from the past, so I want to know who your favourite strike pairings have been in world football.

I would go for Ian Ormondroyd and Ian Olney - but then I'm a sucker for a long ball. Tweet your suggestions and reasons to #bbcfootball, text 81111 (UK users only) or post on BBC Sport Facebook.

  180. Revenge mission for City

Manchester City v Barcelona (19:45 GMT)

    Sense of deja-vu anyone?

Manchester City met Barcelona at this stage of the competition last time round and, for supporters of the blue half of Manchester, it didn't end well.

Manuel Pellegrini's men lost both legs to go down 4-1 on aggregate as the gulf between the two clubs appeared to be pretty big.

Has that gap narrowed at all? We will find out soon.

  181. Post update

Good evening and what an evening it promises to be.

The champions of England pitting their wits over two legs against the might of Barcelona for a place in the last eight of the Champions League.

David Silva v Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero v Neymar and, of course, the small matter of Luis Suarez's first appearance in England since leaving Liverpool.

    Excited? You should be.

  183. Post update

    Barcelona

Is this the season though Manchester City finally arrive among the game's elite? They will have to do it the hard way.
