Real Madrid 3-4 Schalke (Agg 5-4)

William O'Sullivan: Brilliant display from Schalke. A typical never-say-die attitude from a German team.

Bobby Hanlon: That was proof that money means nothing, when you have a team that works together and fights for the club and fans. So unlucky, Schalke.

Stephen Blakeman: Your team progresses to the next round of the competition and the fans are waving white hankies? Great side, Madrid. Rubbish supporters.

Max Baggins-Craig: Great game. End-to-end stuff at it's best. Glad someone could give Real a scare. Schalke deserved it on the night, I must say.

Mandeep Karki: Madrid need De Gea more than anything else in the whole world.

I, Rob: As bad as they look just now, I'm sure Parma would love a ''crisis'' like Real's...

    Football League update

Six minutes of added time come to an end, as does this scrappy fixture.

An incredible goalmouth scramble following a Garath McCleary corner at the death came to naught, thanks to a save from brave keeper David Stockdale. Reading halt a run of three league defeats in a row. Reading 2-1 Brighton, with the Seagulls still just nine points clear of the drop zone.

  7. Post update

    El Clasico

    Spanish La Liga

El Clasico looms on the horizon like a beautiful, powerful beast. It is now less than two weeks until Real face off against Barcelona. On current form you'd have to be backing the boys from the Nou Camp.

That game will be featured heavily on this website. Of course.

  8. Post update

Real Madrid 3-4 Schalke (Agg 5-4)

No side has retained the Champions League in its present, modern format. Can Real Madrid do it? Not if they play like that they won't.

  9. Player reaction

Real Madrid 3-4 Schalke (Agg 5-4)

Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes: "We played a great game. We were very brave and were not overawed by a world-class team like Real Madrid. Congratulations to my team, we deserved more today."

  10. Post update

    Leroy Sane

Hats off to Schalke midfielder Leroy Sane (on the right). The teenager was thoroughly impressive after he came on as a sub, scoring the third goal with a cracking drive and generally shining.

    Football League update

Comprehensive in the end for Bristol City, who go 13 points clear at the top of League One after a 3-0 win at Yeovil. On loan Wolves man George Saville made the game well and truly safe after collecting the rebound from his tame first effort before slamming in home. A top second half from The Robins.

Coventry 1-1 Bradford in the other League One fixture, with Sky Blues man Nick Proschwitz slicing a late effort wide.

Still playing in the Championship, where it remains Reading 2-1 Brighton. Not long to go.

  17. Post update

Real Madrid 3-4 Schalke (Agg 5-4)

Plenty of Real Madrid fans were showing their dissent at full-time. I thought Spanish media talk of a crisis before the game was a long way wide of the mark but there are real problems there.

  18. FULL-TIME

    Porto 4-0 Basel (Agg 5-1)

Porto have smashed their way through to the last eight with four cracking goals.

  19. RED CARD

Porto 4-0 Basel (Agg 5-1) - Walter Samuel

Old dog, old tricks. Basel defender Walter Samuel sees a second yellow card in stoppage time and is sent-off. Basel have been taught a lesson by a strong Porto side.

Schalke may as well throw the kitchen sink at this now! And the superb Leroy Sane has another dig from range and Iker Casillas has to make the save.

    Football League update

Well into the second halves now in the Football League. In the Championship we find it Reading 2-1 Brighton. The visitors had momentarily pulled level through a well-taken Chris O'Grady penalty after a foul on Emmanuel Ledesma, but then that man Jamie Mackie put the Royals back in front thanks to a great strike from the edge of the area. The stadium may only be about half full, but Mackie's got them rocking.

And the best moment of skill in the game between Coventry and Bradford, thanks to a brilliant free kick from Mark Yeates. That goal was coming - Bradford have had all the pressure and possession in this second 45 and the young Coventry side look very nervous. A goal apiece.

And it remains Yeovil 0-2 Bristol City in the evening's other League One fixture.

    Chris O'Grady

  33. GOAL

    Real Madrid 3-4 Schalke (Agg 5-4) - Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

What a finish! And Schalke are one goal away from knocking out Real Madrid! Not many teams score four at the Bernabeu. The German side get a bit of luck as the ball ricochets into the path of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar but he does so well from there, slamming a shot from the edge of the box which gets bonus points for going in off the underside of the crossbar!

Schalke have to go for it now!

    Huntelaar

  34. CLOSE!

Real Madrid 3-3 Schalke (Agg 5-3)

Lovely. Isco on the left, cuts inside, you know what he's going to do but you can't stop him, he reverses one just past the far corner.

  35. GOAL

Porto 4-0 Basel (Agg 5-1) - Vincent Aboubakar

Porto are having a goal of the season contest all of their own! Another belter, Vincent Aboubakar holding off a man, driving on and then tonking one into the top corner from 20 yards. If you thought Porto would be a nice draw in the last eight, think again...

    Aboubakar
  36. Post update

Real Madrid 3-3 Schalke (Agg 5-3)

Christian Fuchs with the 29th effort of the night, a low shot which Iker Casillas fields nicely. Into the final 10 minutes. Real Madrid have done enough to go through, but that's where the praise will end.

  37. Post update

Real Madrid 3-3 Schalke (Agg 5-3)

Lovely, lovely football from Schalke, for whom the two teenagers Max Meyer and Leroy Sane have really impressed. The duo put together a slick passing move which ends with Iker Casillas making a save from range. Roberto Di Matteo will be delighted with his side's showing - if not the result.

  38. Post update

Real Madrid 3-3 Schalke (Agg 5-3)

Gareth Bale wastes another crossing position from out wide. There's been much speculation that he'll leave Real in the summer - where could he end up? Don't say Old Trafford. Manchester United need many things but another flair player is not on the list.

Schalke have had 13 efforts tonight. Superb effort.

And that's another shot from Bale, rattling the palms of the Schalke keeper. He needs a goal.

    Porto 3-0 Basel (Agg 4-1)

Porto midfielder Casemiro is on loan from Real Madrid. He's no Toni Kroos but he's had two or three cracking shots tonight. Basel go close next as Luca Zuffi tests Fabiano from 18 yards.

Real Madrid 3-3 Schalke (Agg 5-3)

Back in Spain and Schalke don't know when they're out. Tranquillo Barnetta flashes a cross-shot across the face of goal, asking for a touch, and then Max Meyer shoots wide. At the other end Alvaro Arbeloa has a shot beaten clear.

  44. GOAL

    Porto 3-0 Basel (Agg 4-1) - Casemiro

Get hold of that one! Goodness me Casemiro can hit a ball! That is a belter of a free-kick, wonderful technique. What is that, 30 yards out? He smashes it in, like a Brazilian Tom Huddlestone. All sorts of dip and swerve on it, just brilliant.

Who do we all think are the best side in European football right now? I've not seen a huge amount of Bayern Munich this season but they are strolling the Bundesliga.

    Football League update

All guns blazing into the second half at Huish Park between Yeovil and Bristol City. Just over a minute into the second half and Luke Freeman of league leaders City whipped in a wicked ball and Kieran Agard was in the right place at the right time to tap it in from two yard. That was soon followed by a smooth finish from Freeman himself, curling it majestically into the bottom right corner after a cutback from the right. 2-0 to Bristol City, and the Robins fans are on their feet and dancing.

It remains Coventry 1-0 Bradford in the other League One fixture following Frank Nouble's close-range finish, and Reading 1-0 Brighton in the Championship.

  48. SUBSTITUTION

Real Madrid 3-3 Schalke (Agg 5-3)

Luka Modric gets a huge ovation as he comes on for Real Madrid, replacing Sami Khedira. The Former Tottenham man is a huge player for the club these days. Also on is Marcelo, who is on a yellow card.

  49. GOAL

Real Madrid 3-3 Schalke (Agg 5-3) - Leroy Sane

Yes Leroy! What a goal from the Schalke sub on his European debut! Leroy Sane takes his time to hit one from the edge of the box, gets some dip on it and it's too good again for Iker Casillas. Hit the target and you score at the moment against Casillas...

    Leroy Sane celebrates
  50. Post update

Real Madrid 3-2 Schalke (Agg 5-2)

Real Madrid have been a long way short of their vintage best but the BBC have dug them out of a hole again. Not us, their strikeforce.

  51. GOAL

Porto 2-0 Basel (Agg 3-1) - Hector Herrera

Porto to join Real in the last eight? Looks that way as they open up a two-goal lead. Cracking finish too from Hector Herrera, bending in a fine strike from 16 yards.

    Hector Herrera
  52. GOAL

Real Madrid 3-2 Schalke (Agg 5-2) - Karim Benzema

I think that might well be that now. Karim Benzema is just about onside to pick up a ball inside the area, he shows magic feet to skip away from two defenders, go round the keeper and slam in.

    Karim Benzema
  53. KICK-OFF

    Porto 1-0 Basel (Agg 2-1)

    Back under way in Portugal.

  54. Post update

Schalke force another corner. I tell you what, a third goal for the visitors and it is time to get exited. Cristiano Ronaldo turns centre-half though to head out a cross.

  55. Post update

Real Madrid 2-2 Schalke (Agg 4-2)

Schalke's youngsters have impressed tonight, they could be even more of a force in the next few years if they can keep this side together. Leroy Sane has a shot steered away.

  56. KICK-OFF

Real Madrid 2-2 Schalke (Agg 4-2)

    Cristiano Ronaldo thumbs up
  63. CLOSE!

    Porto 1-0 Basel (Agg 2-1)

At the other end, Basel go close as Shkelzen Gashi flashes a shot past the post from 20 yards. He had more time than he realised to compose himself but that's the best Basel have done this half.

    Football League update

Three games in the lower leagues, and only one goal to report. Sorry about that.

We've played half an hour at the Madejski Stadium and it's Reading 1-0 Brighton. Before kick-off Jamie Mackie was presented with the fans' Player of the Month Award for February, and he's repaid them with a fine solo finish, beating a pair of Seagulls defenders before drilling it home. Great goal.

Into League One, and it's goalless between Yeovil and Bristol City. The chances have all been the league leaders', with a Marlon Pack free-kick heading into the corner before Scott Loach dived down low, just tipping it wide.

And Coventry 0-0 Bradford, with the Bantams close to taking the leader after a defensive mix-up lead to Sky Blues defender Aaron Martin deflecting the ball just wide of goal with his knee.

    Jamie Mackie finish
  65. CLOSE!

    Porto 1-0 Basel (Agg 2-1)

Another decent chance for Porto as Cristian Tello latches onto a diagonal ball and lifts the ball over the Basel goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik, but his lay-off is hacked clear by Walter Samuel before Vincent Aboubakar can intercept.

  67. GOAL

Real Madrid 2-2 Schalke (Agg 4-2) - Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo, targetman! What a header, again! The cross is magnificent, Fabio Coentrao with a hit on the run that is perfect, it dips and curves away from the Schalke defence, and Ronaldo arrives on it to plant the header into the roof of the net.

  71. GOAL

    Real Madrid 1-2 Schalke (Agg 3-2) - Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Game on again! Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was so close to scoring a minute ago and now he has. Max Meyer shoots from a tight angle, again Iker Casillas is not very convincing, shovelling it out into the middle of the penalty area and the Dutch predator is on it, battering into the roof of the net.

Schalke have cancelled out Real's two away goals. A huge step forwards.

    Huntelaar finish
    Huntelaar celebrates
  72. HITS THE WOODWORK

Real Madrid 1-1 Schalke (Agg 3-1)

More defensive nightmares for Real Madrid! Raphael Varane plays a backpass from the Antonio Valencia handbook, totally undercooked. Iker Casillas has to tackle Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and the rebounding ball bobbles a yard wide of the post. Could have gone anywhere.

And then that is majestic from Huntelaar! He drives in a half-volley from at least 25 yards, it rattles the outside of the post. Brilliant shot.

  73. Post update

Real Madrid 1-1 Schalke (Agg 3-1)

Gareth Bale drills in a shot on the turn but it's straight at Timon Wellenreuther. A slightly happier camp inside the stadium, Real playing much better than they were in the first 20 minutes.

Just under way in the only game in the Championship, as Reading host Brighton near the foot of the table. Reading have won only one of their last six games in the Championship, but the Seagulls have not won any of their last four away games, losing two.

In League One, top of the table Bristol City are away at Yeovil and they are 15 minutes in. Former Glovers defender Luke Ayling had the first chance for Bristol City, driving forward and hitting a shot just past right post. But it remains goalless.

And at Coventry v Bradford, both sides could already have netted but the main star of this fixture is the Ricoh pitch, horribly cut up following a London Wasps rugby fixture at the weekend.

The Schalke fans are making all the din in a subdued Bernabeu. This is pretty mundane stuff from Madrid. Teenage Schalke keeper Timon Wellenreuther hasn't had a thing to do, as at the other end Max Meyer shoots wide from 22 yards.

Porto very nearly extend their lead as midfielder Casemiro floats a cracking effort onto the roof of the net from a good 35+ yards. What a hit!

  90. GOAL

Porto 1-0 Basel (Agg 2-1) - Yacine Brahimi

It's in there! A free-kick right on the edge of the box, get it over the wall and you score. And that's exactly what Yacine Brahimi does, clipping it over the wall and into the net.

    Cliche time but:

'In a way that doesn't change what Basel have to do. They always needed to score and another 1-1 draw would take this to extra-time...'

Real Madrid are defending like Manchester United. Badly.

Schalke get in very easily again and an offside flag is up as Marco Hoger rattles a shot at Iker Casillas. My prediction after three minutes that Schalke may not get another chance was absolute tosh.

  93. PENALTY APPEAL

    Porto 0-0 Basel (Agg 1-1)

Porto want a penalty as Yacine Brahimi takes a tumble - but no dice. First goal tonight could be massive in this tie.

  94. CLOSE!

Real Madrid 0-0 Schalke (Agg 2-0)

Chance! Best chance of the night falls for Schalke, and it's a good one too. Max Meyer - who fans of a football management game will know will be world class in a few years - gets into space on the left, looks up and picks out Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting on the edge of the box. He tries to side-foot in first time but it's a poor effort. Well, well wide.

Real Madrid have lost four times since the turn of the year and you can see it in their play. Not at their fluent best, like a sitcom that's gone one season too far.

There's so much quality in the team though, it can click into gear at any stage and Isco is almost in, but his shot is turned away.

You have it, we'll have it so far in Porto. The hosts are playing a very high defence, perhaps in the knowledge that Basel's veteran striker Marco Streller is about as fast as longshore drift.

Give him a cross though, and he's in business.

Real Madrid 0-0 Schalke (Agg 2-0)

Schalke win the ball from Isco and they are in real business - it's three on three! Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is in oceans at the back stick but the pass over is awful, right at Iker Casillas.

There are 87 minutes of the tie left but Schalke may not get a better chance than that.

    Schalke boss Roberto Di Matteo

Schalke boss Roberto Di Matteo on ITV: "We want to give a good account of ourselves. We have to try our best and see what comes out.

"The mindset is forget about the last game and try and win the game here. If we score the first goal it is going to be interesting. I don't believe Real are in crisis. The media is making more of it than it is."

  106. Yes. No. Yes.

Chelsea v PSG (play on Wednesday)

Did PSG dominate Chelsea in the first leg, Jose? Well yes. Kind of.

"If to dominate is the number of chances created, yes Paris had more chances than us. If dominating means stopping your opponent from playing, making foul after foul, yes they also dominated. If to dominate is to have the ball but make no progress, yes they dominated. So yes, I think they dominated in every way except the result."

  108. Jose wants "more football, less aggression" from PSG

Chelsea v PSG (play on Wednesday)

    Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho: "A team with fantastic players [PSG] was the team with that record of fouls, making foul after the foul. They were the team that stopped Eden Hazard with fouls all the time, the team that was attacking the man in possession of the ball with two or three players very aggressively.

"They were the team even with a player like Zlatan, a typical attacking player, who was coming back and tackling Hazard whenever his team lost the ball, tackling him from behind to stop a counter-attack.

"I have to be fair, I thought a team from England would never be surprised by aggression, because aggression is in our country. During this season we have played a few times against teams from the Championship in the cups, and we've played teams from League One in the cups and even a team from League Two, Shrewsbury, in the cups. But the most aggressive team was Paris St-Germain.

"For me, that was a real surprise, because for a team with so much quality I was expecting more football and less aggression."

    Feisty stuff from Jose...

Just how important is home advantage in the second leg of the Champions League?

"Experience helps us to sleep well tonight. You feel comfortable to play. It's something that you do a lot of times," he says.

"This is [just] one more game, in spite of it being a knockout game and the second leg. So, calm.

"But I think that, during the game, the players will play. We are speaking about teams with very good players, and some of them are very comfortable playing at this level. It's more about them."

If he can find his best form, Cristiano Ronaldo can once more overtake Lionel Messi at the top of the all-time Champions League goalscorers list tonight with a brace. Those two will continue to trade places at the top of this list for the next few years.

Where will the record end up? 100 goals?

  120. "Zlatan's someone who loves the big occasion"

Chelsea v PSG (play on Wednesday)

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Former France captain Blanc also told reporters that he hopes his side can perform better in London than Chelsea managed in Paris.

"I hope we do better than Chelsea did in the first leg," he said. "Chelsea created only one chance and they scored from that. I hope we create more than one chance."

How does he intend for his side to manage that? That no-so-secret weapon, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"He's someone who loves the big occasion. He's a player who can score at any time, in any venue, against any opponent.

"I don't think [Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma] are going to be happy about facing Zlatan."

Ahead of tomorrow's big clash in west London, Paris St-Germain boss Laurent Blanc has warned his players not to lose their cool with famously combative Chelsea frontman Diego Costa, who "needs" confrontation to play at his best.

"He likes contact, and provokes opposition players. That's part of his game. He thrives off that," Blanc said.

"He really needs that to bring out the best in his performances.

"The most important thing is to not get caught up in the way he plays. He will try to provoke a reaction. We need to stay calm, not get caught up in his game. We need to be as effective as possible in stopping him."

Real Madrid make three changes from the side who lost to Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Saturday, with Alvaro Arbeloa, Fabio Coentrao and Sami Khedira returning to the side.

Gareth Bale's former Tottenham teammate Luka Modric returns to the Real squad for the first time since suffering a torn thigh muscle in November.

Roberto Di Matteo's Schalke include former Real striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in their line-up, while midfielder Leon Goretzka is on the substitutes bench after recovering from a muscle injury.

The Germans are fifth in the Bundesliga following their 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Real Madrid XI: Casillas, Arbeloa, Varane, Pepe, Coentrao, Kroos, Khedira, Isco, Bale, Ronaldo, Benzema.

Real Madrid v Schalke (19:45 GMT) (Agg 2-0)

If Cristiano Ronaldo is under fire from some quarters for only bagging three goals in his last seven games, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema are taking a hammering in the Madrid press.

Bale hasn't scored in eight games - a run dating back to 24 January - and French forward Benzema has just 13 goals in 24 league games.

Not useless, not by a long stretch. But if you play up front for Real Madrid the demands are huge.

All three of them could do with a goal or two tonight. Which could give us quite some game...

  131. Football League preview

There are three games in the Football League tonight.

In the Championship, FA Cup quarter-finalists Reading face Brighton, while League One leaders Bristol City are at Yeovil and another FA Cup survivor Bradford City take on Coventry.

    Porto v Basel (19:45 GMT) (Agg 1-1)

    Paulo Sousa

The spotlight may fall on Madrid tonight but the other knockout game promises to be a tight, tense affair.

Former Swansea, Leicester and QPR boss Paulo Sousa led Swiss side Basel into the knockout stages, with Liverpool one of their victims in their group.

The first leg was drawn and an away goal for Basel tonight would be massive.

Sousa says: "This feels amazing. It's something really special to compete at this level and we are happy to be here, competing against the best - we are confident and positive.

"Any time we can relieve the pressure posed by Porto we can create difficulties. That might be when our goal appears."

  133. Off the boil?

Real Madrid v Schalke (19:45 GMT) (Agg 2-0)

    Cristiano Ronaldo

When you set standards that are in the stratosphere, being just 'good' won't cut it.

Real's Cristiano Ronaldo is having a stellar season - with 30 league goals in 23 appearances, and 39 in all competitions - but there is the slightest suggestion he is not at his best at the moment.

He failed to score in defeat to Athletic Bilbao at the weekend, and has not had a single shot on target in four of his last eight La Liga games.

Just three goals in his last seven games? By his own standards that's rubbish...

"Without doubt I have confidence in my forwards. There has been a general dip from the team, not just them.

"I would have to drop Karim Benzema because he hasn't scored in a few games. I would have to drop Cristiano. I don't think Gareth Bale is happy with how he is playing but he understands that he has to improve."

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has been forced to defend his world-famous front three this week after 'The BBC' of Benzema, Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo were accused of misfiring.
