  • Mascherano had brought down Aguero on 77 mins

  • Rakitic lobs Hart after sublime Messi pass

  1. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:23 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

Goalscorer Ivan Rakitic is allowed to take a free-kick and puts it over before Samir Nasri hacks down Neymar and is booked. There's a lot of reaction to that one, players from both sides circle the referee and Yaya Toure has to get in and calm it down.

Nasri could have seen red for that. It was just a kick into the shins of Neymar.

"That goal doesn't change much really. City have still got to score two goals.

"But if he (Rakitic) is a midfield player, someone has got to track the run. Where's Yaya Toure? He's got to be spotting runs like that."

That goal had been coming since City got off the plane. If Barcelona don't go through to the last eight tonight we will have the best hour of football in a long, long time...

Phenomenal! Phenomenal stuff from Lionel Messi. City get hit on the break, they leave midfield empty and they pay a heavy price. Messi gets it on the right, City have two men on him but it's nowhere near enough.

He cuts on to his left foot, looks up and floats a 45-yard crossfield pass right onto the chest of Ivan Rakitic. Joe Hart comes out, the Croatian lifts a lob over his head and in off the underside of the crossbar. It's a brilliant goal.

Manuel Pellegrini leaves his dugout to venture to the sidelines. I'm not sure what his words of wisdom are but he'll hope they break through. City have looked OK on the ball. They've been cut to ribbons off it.

    Robbie Savage
    BBC Radio 5 live

"People talk about Chelsea getting players around the referee. There are four or five City players around the referee. It was a definite foul.

"Messi can't get much closer. I think the third one (free-kick) might end up in the top corner."

    Andy West
Spanish football writer at the Nou Camp

"Lionel Messi getting the ball in those positions on the right corner of the box are so dangerous. He can either cut inside and shoot or clip it to the far post, where Neymar is always waiting for a diagonal ball. It's a new aspect to their game with Messi's changed role this season."

  8. CLOSE!published at 20:15 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

Lionel Messi whips the free-kick over the wall, more revolutions on the ball than a Shane Warne flipper, and again it lands on the roof of the net. Two feet away from a goal.

Another booking for Manchester City, that's three now, as David Silva dives in on Lionel Messi. Silva says he gets the ball and I think he did, but it was a wild one. Free-kick 25 yards out...

  10. Football League latestpublished at 20:13 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

Just three games in the Football League tonight and they're all under way.

In the Championship, it's goalless in the 19:45 GMT kick-off at the City Ground where Nottingham Forest are hosting Rotherham, while the 20:00 GMT contest between Fulham and Leeds and Craven Cottage is also sans buts with just a few minutes gone.

It's a similar tale at the Pirelli Stadium in League Two where leaders Burton and fifth-placed Southend are still to break the deadlock, although the visitors have spurned a glorious chance to go ahead with Barry Corr seeing a penalty saved by Burton goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

Lionel Messi being moved out to the right to accommodate Luis Suarez has been a big talking point in Spain - and further afield - but it's not harming Messi's goal return. Also, the Argentine has just tracked back 60 yards to cut out a pass from James Milner. Graft and grace.

"I think Manuel Pellegrini will be quite happy. Barca have created a couple of chances and hit the post but James Milner had a good chance as well."

  13. Postpublished at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

Manchester City have had 56% of the ball so far, but they've also given away the best chance of the night. If it gets to the hour mark goalless I'd imagine Manuel Pellegrini would be happy enough.

The way Lionel Messi is playing though, that doesn't seem likely. The little magician nutmegs Fernandinho brilliantly but his pass out wide is cut out.

  14. Kolorov bookedpublished at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

    Robbie Savage
    BBC Radio 5 live

"It's lazy defending from Kolarov, no doubt about that. It's a stupid yellow card and that's two now in the book. You've got to keep 11 players on the pitch. Going down to 10 men again would be a nightmare."

  15. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

Aleksandar Kolarov, you've got another 70 minutes directly up against Lionel Messi, why would you bodycheck him on the halfway line and get booked? Why would you do that?

  16. Postpublished at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

City win a corner through Aleksandar Kolarov but the delivery is really poor. has to be better. Kolarov then does have a shot from 25 yards, worth a try on this wet pitch, but Barca's cup keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen makes the save easily enough.

  17. CLOSE!published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

Lionel Messi takes the free-kick following that foul from Fernandinho. He swings one over the wall, it needs to dip, it does dip, but it lands on the roof of the net. A loosener.

Nitin Raj Menon: City would wish Tevez was scoring that 30 yards belter for them against Barca.

Steve Howes: Where did all City's money get spent? Barca are making them look like mugs.

Ash Williams: Surprised that it's Kompany making the recent mistakes. Not looked the same since his injury.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

If City take encouragement from that half-chance, they'll be equally worried with how fragile they look in defence. One pass forwards and it's three-on-three. That's as good as suicide against the Barca attack. Fernandinho gets back but all he can do is haul Neymar down and go into the book.

Remember, City have had a man sent off in their last three games against Barcelona.

  20. CLOSE!published at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2015

David Silva looks the most comfortable in this company, he's drifting into space and finding pockets of space. And there's a good chance! Silva finds Yaya Toure bursting into the box, the big man drills it across goal for James Milner. It looks like a tap-in for Milner but Dani Alves does brilliantly to block it out. Encouraging stuff though for the visitors.
