Matt Blazey: The one thing Newcastle seem to do fantastically week in, week out - shoot themselves in the foot.

Sahil Oberoi: That Crouch header was almost as good as Harry Kane's yesterday!

Just when John Carver's local chippy was preparing to open up on a Sunday to toast a first home win, Peter Crouch goes and rises like a battered cod at the back stick. Party-pooper.

"A fantastic cross from Geoff Cameron and when you have got Peter Crouch on the pitch he will always pull away off the defender like that. Geoff Cameron just has to put the ball in and Crouch will do the rest. And he does exactly what he should do and heads it across the goalkeeper. A wonderful header."

I've seen this somewhere before. A long ball from deep is arrowed towards the big man at the back stick, and Peter Crouch obliges with a net-rippling leveller. Job done.

"Newcastle's substitutions have worked well and they are the more lively of the teams. Stoke have to be careful not to lose their discipline as they go chasing the game. Newcastle really should have gone 2-0 up when they broke on the away side (see 86 mins), only for Charlie Adam to bust a gut and get back to make the saving tackle, true leader that he is."

  7. Postpublished at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2015

I hate to pick up on stereotypes, but Stoke are beginning to play long, diagonal balls into the path of Peter Crouch with those around the big striker waiting for a knockdown.

    Hello... hello...

Ayoze Perez picks up the ball out wide, drives into the middle and checks on to his favoured foot before ballooning his effort over the bar from 12 yards out. Nice run, shame about the finish.

Rabin: Less than five minutes remaining, queue a tall man entering the fray.

Graham Megennis: I'm an Newcastle fan and celebrated the goal, but boy was Jack Colback lucky to be on the field to score it.

Surely Newcastle are on for 2-0... they are three on two, Moussa Sissoko gallops forward and lays the ball off to Gabriel Obertan, but the winger ends up skipping past one challenge then giving the ball away. Could that be costly?

There were plenty of fantastic goals in January, including both strikes during QPR's 1-1 draw with Swansea and a rare Rickie Lambert league goal for Liverpool.

Stephen Ireland hobbles off, to be replaced by Peter Crouch. Hit it long.

  14. Postpublished at 15:43 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2015

Newcastle break again but Sammy Ameobi puts the ball out of play in trying to spread it out wide. The crowd's groans suggest they are getting a bit frustrated with Ameobi.

  16. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2015

Pack up and go home now, Stoke... it's not your day. Stephen Ireland scores an apparent worldy from 25 yards as he sweeps the ball into the top corner, but the linesman flags for offside. Marginal, but probably just about right.

Former Newcastle & Stoke defender Andy Griffin
BBC Radio Stoke at St James' Park

"It's good play from Newcastle but as soon as the ball goes out to the edge of the box the Stoke players have got to be busting a gut to put pressure on Jack Colback. The referee has shown no consistency - he should have sent Colback off earlier for a second yellow card. He shouldn't be on the pitch but has scored what could be the winning goal."

  18. GOALpublished at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2015

Controversy! Jack Colback, who probably should have been sent off a few minutes earlier, puts Newcastle in front. It's a decent finish too, the midfielder smashing home from just inside the box via the inside of the post. Gabriel Obertan created the chance with a low cross which was layed into the path of Colback by Moussa Sissoko.

A change of tack from Newcastle? The intricate passing and movement of Remy Cabella is no more and they spread the play out wide where Gabriel Obertan puts in a decent cross which Papiss Cisse heads wide.
