Upton Park is alive to the sound of boos as Robin van Persie backs into James Tomkins and swings an arm into the face of the Hammers defender. The Dutchman, who tested Adrian with a shot from six yards out earlier, escapes without caution.

Worrying times for Manchester United as West Ham break swiftly from a corner and Diafra Sakho almost gets in on goal, but Antonio Valencia makes a fantastic, well-timed tackle in the box.

Manchester United have a chance to attack and Angel Di Maria drives through the middle and rolls the ball to Robin van Persie out on the right but the striker over-hits his cross and the opportunity goes begging.

Manchester United are yet to register an effort on goal. They lack a presence up front - it's just not sticking with Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie.

Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback put his side in front against Stoke just after escaping a second yellow card.

"I made two fouls all game so I wasn't repeat offending but if I had've been sent off I wouldn't have had much argument," he says.

"You get that bit of luck in the game sometimes and it has paid off."

Rob T: Not the best of starts so far for Manchester United. West Ham looking the more likely to score.

Manchester United are getting slightly over-run in midfield, with Enner Valencia dropping in and bolstering a five-man midfield. Diafra Sakho is the furthest player forward.

I'd say West Ham will be happy with their start to this match...

West Ham are enjoying some decent pressure, with Manchester United unable to clear the ball for too long before Radamel Falcao loses it up front and the Hammers load up another attack. This time a Stewart Downing first-time cross evades everyone.

"Enner Valencia just could not keep his effort down but it was probably sneaking in under the bar all the same. David De Gea makes an excellent stop. He is a top-class goalkeeper. And that is what a top side needs."

Cyprian Kaluma: Am so happy to see Radamel Falcao start as well as Adnan Januzaj. Falcao needs games to be sharp and Januzaj too to fulfil his potential.

Michael Devlin: Four touches for Adnan Januzaj in the first six minutes. Four mistakes.

Andrew Tarpey: Can see Manchester United getting their goals in the last 15 in this. This West Ham pressing can't continue for 90 minutes.

  13. GREAT SAVE!published at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2015

David De Gea makes good saves in his sleep these days, and he easily beats Enner Valencia's shot clear before denying the Ecuador striker again from a close-range acrobatic effort.

Stewart Downing has been switched from his new number 10 role to out wide today, and he's being encouraged to run at Antonio Valencia. Does Big Sam see a defensive weakness? Or perhaps it's a ploy so the United full-backs don't push forward too much?

"It's been a good start to the game. Manchester United have been trying to pin West Ham back in defence but when the home side break you can see the danger they pose with the pace of Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia. Those two want the ball out in front of them and when they get it they are very hard to contain."

Louis van Gaal is very stoney-faced on the Manchester United bench while one of his assistants sits there shadow boxing. "Do you reckon Floyd and Manny will get it on, boss?" "Just watch the game, will you."

"A mistake by Alex Song as he plays a square pass almost straight to Robin van Persie but Cheikhou Kouyate intervenes. Almost very costly for West Ham."

Alex Song almost gift-wraps Manchester United the opening goal with a reckless ball across the box which Robin van Persie latches upon, only for Cheikhou Kouyate to nip in front just in the nick of time.

Good, old-fashioned wing-play from Stewart Downing sees him run at Marcos Rojo, take the full-back to the line and put in a cross which David De Gea does well to cut out.

An early chance for Manchester United to create an opening but Wayne Rooney dinks a deep free-kick straight into the grateful arms of Adrian.
