"Harry Kane is not a kid, he has played plenty of games. He is the top scoring Englishman in the Premier League this season so why shouldn't fans be getting excited about him? With 15 games to this term he has already beaten Emmanuel Adebayor's total for Spurs last year."

Tottenham aren't letting any go over off stump early on - they are straight onto the attack as Mousa Dembele drives at the Liverpool defence. The move does break down though and Spurs regroup and pump it forward again.

"I have watched Harry Kane a lot this season, he a is a really good footballer but we should lay off him. He is only a kid. Can I remind you about the last breakthrough kid Andros Townsend? He is on the bench today."

"You'll never walk alone" time at Anfield and the cameras pick up a gentleman of a certain vintage holding aloft a scarf with the words "On our way to glory with Brendan" emblazoned across it.

The players line up in the tunnel. Harry Kane, like he did against Arsenal, stares intently into the distance. As the players enter the pitch, the A-Team theme tune blares out. Brendan loves it when a plan comes together.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, speaking to BT Sport: "It's a massive game and we're up for it. It's good to have clean sheets, we have been defensively solid recently and hopefully we can continue that tonight. We'll be positive, we're at home and we want to win the game."

The last time these two teams met, Liverpool blew Tottenham away with a scintillating display at White Hart Lane. And Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris wants to avenge that 3-0 defeat in August tonight.

"Liverpool were very good. You're going to see a different Spurs team I think we are improving and we are in a good dynamic," the goalkeeper said., external "The win against Arsenal was great for confidence and we need to keep playing in that way.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "Daniel Sturridge has been back in training for a couple of weeks, but we are having to get his fitness in games. Tonight is a good night for him to start.

"Raheem Sterling picked up an injury in the bottom of his foot and it has been really painful. He had to come off in the derby game.

"Lazar Markovic will be playing in a way of working he knows well. He has done very well since he came into the team.

"Young Jordan Ibe is a very relaxed kid as you saw from his performance in the derby match. It will be his first home start this season and he will be looking forward to it.

"Sturridge clearly has everything as a top European striker and if we can get him on field he will show that. Kane is terrific talent and it shows if a home grown player is given the opportunity he can do it."

Tee-J: Sturridge and Kane are equally good. Kane = target man with great feet. Sturridge = pacey striker + decent in the air.

  15. Sterling's contract offerpublished at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2015

    Ben Smith
    BBC Sport

"Liverpool's first offer of £70,000 a week was more than double the 20-year-old forward's current salary, and they have now increased that offer significantly.

"While sums of £80,000, £90,000 or £100,000 a week represent a jaw-dropping amount of money to most people, Sterling is the club's top scorer this season and creator of the most chances. Captain Steven Gerrard earns around £150,000 per week, while Glen Johnson is on more than £110,000, and neither can claim to have been anywhere near as influential as Sterling this season."

  16. Postpublished at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2015

Off the pitch, Liverpool have been busy negotiating a new deal for Raheem Sterling. The exact figures aren't known, but Brendan Rodgers described the offer as "incredible".

"The club has offered an incredible deal for a young player," Rodgers said. "But if they get too much, too young then it really sabotages their development."

    Will he sign?

  17. Postpublished at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2015

Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Anfield

"Liverpool legend Ian Rush - the club's record goalscorer with 346 in 660 appearances - has just been signing autographs in Anfield's directors' box. No doubt he will be casting a keen eye over Daniel Sturridge and Harry Kane. If anyone knows what makes a top-class striker it is the great Wales international."

It's fair to say Liverpool are a bit of a bogey team for Tottenham. The Reds are looking for their fifth consecutive win over Tottenham, having lost just one of their last 20 Premier League home matches against Spurs (W13, D6, L1).

Brendan Rodgers's men are also unbeaten in their last six league games at Anfield (W3, D3), and are the only unbeaten team in the top flight in 2015.

Aside from a league defeat against Spurs at Anfield in 2011, the last time the north London side left victorious was in 1993. Some of the players involved that day are a real blast from the past: Vinny Samways, Jason Dozzell and Gordon Durie for Spurs and, for Liverpool, David Burrows, Mark Walters and Ronnie Whelan. Glory days.
