  1. CLOSE!published at 20:27 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2015

Good effort again from Danny Welbeck, slipping one challenge before firing a strike from 20 yards over the top. Good shape to that effort, curling back in, but just too high.

"Rooney didn't quite generate enough power. I think he was expecting the goalkeeper to take a step to one side but because he couldn't see, the keeper stayed where he was."

  3. Postpublished at 20:25 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2015

Wayne Rooney does take the free-kick after a long wait, he gets it round the wall but it's an easy take for keeper Giedrius Arlauskis. Lithuania will be pleased to get in at 1-0.

"Lithuania look organised at the moment but you would expect them to tire as the game goes on and that should give England more chances in the second half."

Jordan Henderson fires one wide but the ref calls it back for a free-kick right on the edge of the area. Good decision. Chance for 2-0 here.

Lewis Starks: Why are England playing with four at the back and three in central midfield against a side like Lithuania! So negative.

John Coote: Michael Carrick should have played in Italy or Spain. He is Xavi or Pirlo-esque and treats a football like a well trained dog.

Peter Kiratzi: England and Hodgson are a perfect match. Solid, uninspiring, unspectacular fare!

Harry Kane is warming up, to a good reception. Leighton Baines had a whack earlier and he gets another bruising one in the back too. Ouch.

"Good defending by Phil Jones. That shows that you have to remain concentrated. You've got to stay on your toes."

  10. CLOSE!published at 20:19 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2015

Lithuania close to an equaliser! They've hardly been out of their half but break brightly and a good cross from the left picks out Deivydas Matulevicius in the middle. A clean connection and he scores, but under pressure from Phil Jones he can't get a clear strike away.

That is what you call a wake-up call. England need more than one.

"Lithuania game but lacking any quality. The more you see of England's opponents, the more you realise how much of a gift this Euro 2016 qualifying group was for manager Roy Hodgson.

"If he needed respite and room for manoeuvre after a shocking World Cup, the draw to qualify for France next summer offered it to him on a plate."

Vytautas Andriuskevicius loses the ball in a dangerous area and inadvertently triggers an England attack. Wayne Rooney goes up for a header, it's cleared and Leighton Baines doesn't know whether to shoot or cross and in the end does neither.

Marcus in Salisbury: Take out Delph, drop Rooney into midfield and start Kane. Problem solved Roy. Goals will be scored and Rooney better than Delph in midfield especially with Carrick playing in that holding role.

He's the new Emile Heskey isn't he, Danny Welbeck? Puts a shift in, people score goals playing alongside him, works hard, doesn't complain...

Luke: Rooney and Welbeck play great together, now we know why Sir Alex Ferguson had such faith in Welbeck. Dare we question him?

Nick Gething: All Rooney needs now is to hit the right hand post to complete his hat-trick.

Gabriel Germain: Who's complaining about Welbeck now? Wish he could play for Arsenal with the same verve!

Danny Welbeck caught offside, that's a tight call and he was away and gone too. Too much pace, too much guile in the England attack so far.

It's only 1-0 though. It should/could be three and Wayne Rooney should/could have his first hat-trick for the national side.

"We've seen England play teams such as San Marino and Macedonia here and struggle because of a lack of tempo. But England have started with intensity and purpose and that's what we need to see in the big games."

Lithuania are looking like the 94th best team in the world right now. They are lethargic out of possession and charitable in possession. Leighton Baines gets forward to join in and tees up Jordan Henderson - but he's left his shooting boots in a Reliant Robin, shanking one wide...

"Wayne Rooney should have had three goals. He's been very bright so far, he's been unlucky twice and scored once but I have to say again what a poor side Lithuania are."

Stern John would have buried that one [see 16 mins]...

There are goals for England in this game tonight, they break sharply from a rare Lithuanian attack but Wayne Rooney's pass is too strong for Danny Welbeck.
