As one debate begins - should Harry Kane start? - another one seems to be coming to an end. Remember when all of the chat was about Wayne Rooney playing in midfield?

Rooney leads the line for England tonight as he chases down that goalscoring record.

Which new faces would you like to see in the England squad?

Michael Covill: Patrick Bamford and Harry Kane up front together would terrify any defence in the world.

Paul Whickman: Scott Dann, Ryan Shawcross, Mark Noble and Ryan Bertrand.

Chris White: I'd like Roy to get a cap, maybe with a 'D' on it.

  4. 'Involve Kane gradually'published at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2015

    Danny Mills
BBC Radio 5 live at Wembley

"We've got to protect Harry Kane a little bit. There's huge pressure on him.

"Think about what Sir Alex Ferguson used to do. If you've got a player scoring hundreds of goals in the reserves, they don't just bang them straight into the first team. You give them half an hour here and there and involve them gradually."

Ryan J Brighton: Need I remind people that Welbeck is the joint top goalscorer in qualifying so far?

Kyle: Pretty sure Danny Welbeck is top goalscorer across all of the euro qualifiers.....would be very harsh for Roy to drop him.

Sam, Northamptonshire: Carroll and Frazier Campbell have both scored more Premier League goals than Welbeck this season. Awful decision. Hodgson's love affair with the traditional "top 4" clubs must end if England are to progress.

  7. 'Kane will be nervous'published at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2015

    Danny Mills
BBC Radio 5 live at Wembley

On Roy Hodgson's decision to start Harry Kane on the bench: "You have to remember this is Harry Kane's first time in the England squad. I don't care how well you're playing, there will be nerves.

"I think Roy's looked at the bigger picture. If he puts him in to the team, there is so much pressure. I think he's looked at the situation and thought 'I can just take a little bit of pressure off by giving him a taster'.

"For longevity, I think it's probably the right decision."

Here is a fresh-faced Wayne Rooney after scoring his first goal for England in September 2003 at the age of 17. Look at the build of him!

He's scored 45 more goals since. Four penalties, eight from outside the area and 10 with his head.

Steve Howes: Why does Roy waste his energy going to watch games, He is not going to pick form players but he will always pick Rooney.

Shaun Williamson: Didn't Hodgson say he would be the manager to pick on form rather than reputation?! What does Kane have to do? Terrible!

Ben Storrie: Welbeck over Kane because it's a qualifier and Roy wants a player he can rely upon. Opposition irrelevant. Sensible management.

  10. A record breaker?published at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2015

It is a record which has stood for 45 years, but by this time next week we could well have a new name in the record books.

Sir Bobby Charlton's haul of 49 goals for England looked certain to be broken by Gary Lineker in the early 1990s, and then by Michael Owen in the 2000s.

But while injury and loss of form scuppered their bids, there looks to be nothing capable of stopping Wayne Rooney from breaking the record.

The 29-year-old currently has 46 goals for his country, three short of the record. It is getting on for 12 years since his first...

    Craig Spuggy Spencer: Jack Colback.

In England's group second-placed Slovenia host minnows San Marino in a Ljubljana, where it has been raining heavily today. Switzerland will look to keep the pressure up on Slovenia when they face Estonia at the Swissporarena in Lucerne.

Spain face an important clash with Ukraine in Seville which could have a major bearing on who qualifies from Group C. The two nations are level on nine points, three points behind leaders Slovakia who welcome Luxembourg to Zilina. Macedonia versus Belarus is the pool's other clash.

Group G leaders Austria travel to the Rheinpark in Vaduz to face Liechtenstein, who recorded a surprise 1-0 away win over Moldova back in November. Elsewhere in the group, third-placed Russia travel to Montenegro looking to keep the pressure up Sweden, who will look to tighten their grip on second place against Moldova in Chisinau.

Blayne: There you have it. All that is wrong with England. You pick in-form players. Kane is in form. Welbeck is not. Oh well!?

Martin, London: One striker and three central midfield players against Lithuania at home? Is Roy part of a reality TV experiment or something?

Kieran in Kent: those wanting Kane to start ahead of Welbeck need to look at who is the top scorer in Euro qualifying.

Tempting, but not tempting enough. Harry Kane will get his chance for England, but not from the start tonight.

After all he's only scored 29 times this season, and 11 in his last 11...

  16. 'Kane has time on his side'published at 18:59 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2015

England manager Roy Hodgson talks to Sky Sports News on his decision not to start Harry Kane: "It was tempting, he's trained really well with us this week.

"He's got a long career in front of him.

"It was important to get him in and get his feet under the table to see what it's all about.

"I'm sure he'll make his debut if not tonight, then on Tuesday against Italy. Time is very much on his side."

El Don Carter: Wasn't really expecting Harry Kane to start for England. I think his integration into the team should be gradual.

Jonny Evans: Kane has scored eight more goals than Rooney and Welbeck combined this season. Hodgson should be looking to the future.

Daniel Goody: Harry Kane 29 goals, Danny Welbeck eight - yet Kane's on the bench!

I can't remember the last time we were interested in who was - or wasn't - starting for England. Harry Kane has made an impact already.

Pretty safe to say Harry Kane's omission from England's starting XI hasn't gone down too well with fans...

Jack Harrington: Exactly why England is all wrong - holding midfielders playing and goal machine on the bench.

Tony Stewart: I'm a fan of Hodgson, but Welbeck over Kane is ridiculous. What is that all about?

Matthew Coote: It's a disgrace that Welbeck is starting over Kane. That decision optimises everything that's wrong with English sport.
