  1. PENALTYpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 16 May 2015

Here we go. This is the moment that could shape this game and tie. Christophe Berra blocks a Nathan Redmond shot on the line with his hand. It is definitely a penalty. It is likely to be a red card...

Tim Sherwood looks onImage source, Reuters

Tim Sherwood sits back in his seat. closes his eyes and slowly shakes his head. And no wonder. Villa gift the ball to Southampton in a dangerous area and are once again punished as Shane Long curls a shot from around 30 yards over Shay Given and into the net. More Villa fans flee.

There was a suggestion before this game that Southampton didn't fancy a Europa league spot. I think that has been disproved now.

Charlie Smith:, external Tim Sherwood does not do defence. It can be a great strength but when exposed it can also be the most heinous of weaknesses.

  6. Balotelli's farewellpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 16 May 2015

In a world full of social media, mobile phones, email, Periscope (if you've not heard of it, give it a Google), what better way to say goodbye to someone than with a hand-written letter. I particularly like the smiley face and the fact he kept his crossings out. He's Mario Balotelli, he doesn't have time to start again.

That's exactly what Mario Balotelli has produced for Steven Gerrard. The Italian calls playing with his captain an "amazing and unforgettable experience". "You are a great man and cool captain," he adds. "It is a pleasure to leave free kicks and penalties to you."

    Shane Long celebratesImage source, Reuters

The only surprise here is that Shane Long has scored and not Sadio Mane. Prior to this game, Tim Sherwood looked to have made Villa tough to beat. Such an impression has been ripped to shreds in 26 minutes at St Mary's. Graziano Pelle's effort is saved by Shay Given, but the ball falls into the path of Shane Long, who passes it into the back of the net.

The Villa players look like their heads have been smashed between two cymbals. Some of their fans are leaving already. Presumably to find the nearest pub.

  10. HALF-TIMEpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 16 May 2015

Half-time in the East Anglian play-off derby and we are no closer to deciding who will play Middlesbrough in the final at Wembley. It has been a closely-contested, fiercely-fought affair, as you'd expect, but one lacking in significant goalmouth action.

  11. Mane at the treblepublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 16 May 2015

Sadio Mane's three goals were scored in two minutes and 56 seconds, making it the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history.

Unbe-ruddy-lievable! Sadio Mane has scored three goals in three minutes as Villa fall spectacularly apart. The ball is played across the edge of the box and finds Mane in acres of space to side-foot a shot into the roof of the net past the dive of Shay Given.

Terrible news for Villa. Sadio Mane makes it two goals in a minute to give the home side a form grip on this game. It is shocking defending from Villa, with a backpass that falls short of Shay Given and allows Mane to pops the ball into an open net.

Bad news for Villa as Sadio Mane flicks the ball away from a sliding Ron Vlaar challenge, sees an initial shot saved by Shay Given but is able to recover to slot the ball into an empty net.

Could Gareth Bale be heading for the Real Madrid exit door?

"I can see him coming back, I think he's had a successful spell there, but for the last four or five months when it has come to the big matches, he's not been at his best."

Former Man United striker Dion Dublin on new signing Memphis Depay: "Van Gaal knows what Depay can do, there's been a void since Giggs left and he is the man to slot in there. He will give them a lot of attacking pace and flair down the flanks, which they have not had for a while."
