"Last summer Saints had lost their manager and many of their star players. I tipped them to be relegated before they signed any replacements and, even when they did, I still thought they would struggle.

"Plenty of teams have started the season surprisingly well before now, but very few of them are still around the following spring.

"That is what made Ronald Koeman different. His team stayed there, and were in contention to qualify for the Champions League with 10 games to go."

Was Koeman Robbie's manager of the year? Find out here.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard to Sky Sports: "We want to finish as high up the table as possible. It's been an emotional week, I've just been trying to savour every moment. It's nice for the attention to be back on team and not just myself. I've had a terrific farewell. It's going to be nice to play in front of our away fans and hopefully the Stoke fans will go easy on me as well."

"And so to this Sunday it's Toffees v Spurs

"Who'll ponder "if only", whatever occurs.

"It should be a contest, despite no champagne,

"With Lukaku and Eriksen, Barkley and Kane."

Samuel Hill: Pompey beating Barnsley 3-0 in 2000-01 to stay up. However, we relied on a late Birmingham winner at Huddersfield to keep us up.

Paul Salmon: Blackburn Rovers title win at Anfield. Greatest football fairytale ever...20 yrs on and still get goosebumps.

Jamie: Needing a win to stay up, Tevez's beautiful goal vs Man Utd after the ball had hung in the air for an impossible amount of time.

Perhaps today will be a day to remember for either Newcastle or Hull fans in years to come.

MOTD's Guy Mowbray at the KC Stadium

"Every time a side managed by Steve Bruce prepares to play Manchester United, he's reminded of the fact that he's never led one to victory against them.

"It started with a 2-0 defeat for Birmingham at Old Trafford in December 2002, and 20 games later United's first Premier League winning (joint) captain is still waiting to get one over his old team.

"The statistic has never carried more relevance than now, as is the case with the one about Hull never having won a Premier League game in May!

"Nothing in The Tigers' last three performances has done anything to suggest that they can get the win they need to have a chance of staying up, but sometimes things just seem to align to make the unlikely happen."

Bit of a mystery surrounding this one, but Juan Mata must be the Spanish number eight? And nice to see Leicester's early-season win referenced...Not sure what the Coldstream Guard is up to though. Who has even made that an icon?

  15. J-Rod back in business?published at 13:53 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez says he is fitter, faster and stronger after spending a year out of football.

The 25-year-old has been out since April 2014 after rupturing his anterior cruciate knee ligament, but recently returned to full training and could play today.

"I've got stronger mentally, because it's been a tough time," Rodriguez told BBC Radio Solent.

"Physically I've improved my stats. That's what I wanted to get out of this. I've improved my speed and strength."

Hull have won only eight of 42 Premier League games since qualifying for the 2014 FA Cup final. A disastrous run of form which has led to them staring relegation hard in the face this afternoon.

  17. Cech him outpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

A lot of farewells to the league today of course, but Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says he does not want goalkeeper Petr Cech to leave the Premier League champions.

How much would you pay for Petr Cech?

The 32-year-old has only made 16 appearances this season, with Belgian Thibaut Courtois now first choice.

Cech's agent recently said the Czech Republic international had been given permission to talk to other clubs.

"I keep saying I would like him to stay," said Mourinho, who also confirmed Cech would play some part against Sunderland today.

Reports have suggested that even with one year on his contract Cech could cost any interested bidders £15m this summer. Value?

  18. Postpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

MOTD's John Roder at Selhurst Park

"If you had offered supporters in August a scenario that saw Palace 11 points clear of the relegation zone and Swansea guaranteed eighth place - both sets of fans would surely, as a friend of mine bluntly put it, have "bitten your hand off to be where they are".

"Swansea have set a new club points record in the Premier League with their current total of 56, while Palace will do likewise over a 38-game season if they avoid defeat - something to be proud of after their campaign started in turmoil following the exit of Tony Pulis.

"Alan Pardew's impact since his arrival has been immense, with nine league wins to turn the campaign around, while Garry Monk is many people's choice for Manager of the Year after a superb first full season in charge."

  19. Farewell Lampspublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

Frank Lampard will captain Manchester City this afternoon in his final Premier League appearance.

MOTD's Steve Bower at the Etihad

"At the beginning of any season there are always questions asked about teams. You have to say Southampton have delivered some emphatic answers, while in contrast Manchester City end the campaign with uncertainty in the air.

"Will Manuel Pellegrini take charge of last season's champions for the final time? Will it be Yaya Toure's farewell? Will the Etihad stadium see James Milner in blue again?

"There are almost more questions to be answered in May than there were in August and that will be a huge source of frustration."
