International football is a cruel mistress at times. England looked sharp and purposeful for the first 20 minutes but trail in Ljubljana and the confidence is draining from them.

Tom Holloway: Pathetic defending! Can't understand how Smalling constantly starts for United and England!

Johnny Magrinho: Well that's just terrible defending. We might be attacking well but we can't seem to score and our defensive line is worrying.

Dennis Ward: Hodgson needs to go asap #hodgsonout

Wayne Rooney tries to get England back on the run but his touch is sluggish and he eventually fouls his man in midfield. Not happening for the men in red at the minute.

Nottmsteve: Hodgson's tactics of boring the opposition to death fail miserably

DeathApeDisco: Sloveniaaaaaaaaaa!!! Honestly, good for them, this England team's going nowhere anyway.

Henry Hunt: Slovenia game plan executed perfectly there - contain, contain, contain, counter-attack, goal.

"Look at the defending from England! Phil Jones just threw the ball away, he gave Slovenia the assist. Gary Cahill is gambling by trying to play offside, he should have gone with his man. England fall asleep and get punished.

"Your full-back needs to know how to take a throw in, not just give the ball back to the opposition."

Well well well! Out of nothing, Slovenia take the lead! England have a very high line, on halfway almost, and they get the offside trap all wrong.

Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill step up as Josip Ilicic plays the ball through to veteran Milivoje Novakovic, who has all the time in the world to beat Joe Hart, and he does, pulling a shot across the Manchester City man and into the net.

His 30th goal for his country. Nicely taken.

Petersen: England seem to be employing the tactic of boring the opposition to death

Dave Abbott: The pessimism from fans is tiring. Can't we just support the team when they're winning and not be so eager to criticise?

Lukas Lammie: I mean we aren't playing great but have to say Phil Jones is actually playing half decent tonight.

Andros Townsend likes a speculator and he tries one from about 30 yards, left footed and low but that's an easy stop. Wayne Rooney has been involved sparsely. Like a cricketer in the nervous 90s, he's looked less and less likely to score the closer he's got to that record...

Jordan Henderson spending time as the deepest of England's three midfielders which allows Jack Wilshere to step up and knit play together on the edge of the Slovenia box. It's much better from the men in red but they have still only forced Samir Handanovic into one (very good) save thus far.
