"Raheem Sterling started this match badly with that miss but since then he has been a real danger man for England. Slovenia are struggling to pick up his darting runs and so far he is justifying manager Roy Hodgson's decision to select him."

Raheem Sterling wins a free-kick out wide with a piece of trickery. Get the ball to him, he can make things happen.

Raheem Sterling is some way from being the finished article, but he's supremely talented and exciting to watch. An hour a day finishing will do it.

    We have our first goal.

Hats off to Liechtenstein who have taken the lead at home to Moldova in a bottom of the table clash in Group G, Hoffenheim midfielder Sandro Wieser the scorer.

Midway through the first half and England have been very watchable. They are not ahead but they have had shape, tempo and some purpose to their game.

David Metcalf: This unbeaten run is nothing to go on about, as soon as we play a top team we'll be taken apart.

Willie Bourke: Unbeatable in friendlies and qualifiers.....but when it matters in the finals v the big boys......they bottle it!

  8. GREAT SAVE!published at 17:24 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

Cracking play from England. Fabian Delph breaks out of midfield with a surging run, carries it 20 yards before pinging it to Wayne Rooney on the left of the box. The captain sizes it up and goes for a first-time shot with his left foot, he cracks it in low and hard and Samir Handanovic makes a strong one-handed save to push it away.

    Super goalkeeping.

"Wayne Rooney is guilty of not attacking that far post with purpose. He was not expecting Raheem Sterling to beat his man and Rooney should have got to it."

  10. CLOSE!published at 17:21 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

He may not be the finished article but Raheem Sterling is by far and away England's most dangerous player so far.

He finds space on the left, takes on his man down the outside, beats him and puts over a brilliant low cross, between goalkeeper and defence, crying out for a tap-in from a red shirt. But there is nobody there. Superb wing play.

No goals in Ljubljana...and no goals anywhere else across Europe yet.

They are coming up to the 20-minute mark and it's goalless between Ukraine and Luxembourg, Estonia and San Marino, Liechtenstein and Moldova, and Fabio Capello's Russia against Austria.

That early tempo to the game is in danger of being stemmed. England moving the ball slower now, plenty of square passes on the halfway line.

Kieran Gibbs has Martin Keown's vote and he sets off on a fine run down the left, beating two men and eating up 45 yards before he is fouled. Who will be the first-choice out there next summer?

    Gibbs? Bertrand? Shaw? Ashley Young...?

    Martin Keown

"Left-back Kieran Gibbs has been out of contention recently but I would like him to really go for it and whip those crosses in.

"Ryan Bertrand did not really do himself any favours when he was in the side. If both players were at Arsenal, Gibbs would be the first choice."

England dominating possession. Haven't got anything to show for it...yet.

  16. CLOSE!published at 17:15 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

Raheem Sterling goes close again! Wayne Rooney frees him away down the left with a cracking outside of the foot pass, Sterling cuts inside on to his right foot, and inside another man before getting a shot off. It is hard and low - but deflected beyond the far post.

"Sharp start by England and they should really be ahead - an awful miss by Raheem Sterling. Some slick passing moves have looked promising but nothing is currently silencing the noisy Slovenia fans. Wayne Rooney took a couple of very heavy early knocks but he is moving well again now."

Roy Hodgson is biting his nails in the plush dugout seats but he must be pleased with this opening. Much more promise and tempo to the start than in many England games.

Raheem Sterling is stretching the game wide left, with Andros Townsend doing the same on the right.

Nice! Jack Wilshere starts a move with two smart turns out of possession as England put together a neat move down the left, Kieran Gibbs' cross earns a corner but there's no end product from it.

The three-man midfield is working so far. Plenty of options for the man on the ball.
