"Millions and millions of pounds, what a bargain! 19 years old, to do that on your debut against your side's arch rivals... he slalomed in-between so many defenders. What a goal!"

"How long do you give Rodgers? I say until Christmas, but if Liverpool are not in contention for fourth then it's fair enough to look at other managers who might be available. Brendan will then be on thin ice."

    Anthony Martial (86 mins)

Well well! For an awful game, this has suddenly come alive!

Another cracking goal, and a big moment for debut boy Anthony Martial! He picks the ball up on the left, skins Martin Skrtel, gets a bit of luck with a bobble and then calmly steers home into the far corner.

(Whisper it but that was a lot like Thierry Henry)

"That was a proper bicycle kick, one where your left is in the air first then your right followed. It went past David de Gea like a rocket - what a goal!"

    Christian Benteke (84 mins)

Good grief! Where on earth has that come from?!

An absolutely belting goal from Christian Benteke! An overhead kick, at the same end Wayne Rooney hit his famous effort against Manchester City. But this is even better in my book, he leaps higher and hits the ball a lot, lot harder!

Flew into the net. Wonderful goal.

  8. GREAT SAVE!published at 83 mins

    Man Utd 2-0 Liverpool

Fine stop again from David De Gea. Jordon Ibe, another Liverpool sub who has been positive, cuts on to his left foot and tries a strike from 20 yadrs which forces De Gea into a flying save!

  9. "Liverpool needed to do better"published at 19:10 British Summer Time 12 September 2015

    Robbie Savage
    606, BBC Radio 5 live

"Liverpool got battered at home by West Ham the other week and have not had many good chances today. They have spent over the summer, but they could not improve a side now missing Suarez and Sturridge.

"But seven points from the first five matches? They needed to do better."

Stick a fork in this game, it's done.

Anthony Martial holds it up well and eventually wins a free-kick from Dejan Lovren.

    Man Utd 2-0 Liverpool

Now he has! Anthony Martial finds Marouane Fellaini but his left-footed shot is straight at Martin Skrtel. Easy block. Divock Origi is direct and has a run but he runs into trouble for Liverpool.

Is it really only 18 months since Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling were running riot?

    Man Utd 2-0 Liverpool.

Anthony Martial has not had a touch yet.

  13. CLOSE!published at 76 mins

    Man Utd 2-0 Liverpool

That is a chance! Great ball from Emre Can - the brightest spark in a drab display for the visitors - sends James Milner in behind on the right, he stands up a decent cross which Christian Benteke can only head over the top. Has to hit the target.

    Ander Herrera celebratesImage source, Reuters

Jerry Elumeze: Herrera made a meal of the tackle, but Gomez didn't get the ball. Correct call, great penalty.

Ashley Wilkinson: Inexperience shows there from Gomez. Still a young man. This has been comprehensive from Man Utd. They may yet finish fourth.

Barry Martin: Aston Villa played every corner and free-kick to Benteke's head and he scored a goal every two games. Liverpool need to start doing the same.

Danny Ings' full Premier League debut comes to a premature end as another Belgian, Divock Origi, is on.

Liverpool haven't looked like scoring apart from that one scrambled set-piece just before the Ander Herrera penalty.
