    HT: West Ham 1-0 Newcastle

There has been a fair amount of positivity since Steve McClaren took charge at St James' Park - certainly more than last season - but with four and a half games played Newcastle are winless and second from bottom. Forty five minutes left to haul themselves out of the bottom three.

"It has not been a total loss, but there is something better to come. West Ham have just edged the first-half but there is promise of a better second half."

"Moses was forced to take a shot from a more acute angle than he would have liked. It was a good move from West Ham but could've had a better result."

That is lightning quick from West Ham. One moment they are defending a corner, the next they almost double the lead.

Victor Moses starts the move with a backheel on the edge of his own area, he keeps running and gets a return ball from Dimitri Payet sending him through on goal. His shot though, from an angle, goes wide.

Injury blow for West Ham as Angelo Ogbonna is replaced by Carl Jenkinson, who will go to full back with James Tomkins moving inside to centre back.

    Break for West Ham though....

For a player plucked from the United Arab Emirates league in the summer, Manuel Lanzini has adapted to the Premier League superbly. He's had more of the ball than any other West Ham player tonight and he's only misplaced one pass.

What a diagonal pass from James Tomkins. David Beckham eat your heart out. His pinging pass sets Victor Moses clear down the left, he crosses, but Mark Noble is just unable to reach it.

"West Ham on occasions have looked bright, but neither side is yet to convince. Newcastle will have to be a little bit more inventive and show that they can be more entertaining and unpredictable."

Mark Noble attempts a Cruyff turn inside West Ham's own half and..... falls over. That pretty much sums up the match so far. Plenty of endeavour but very little quality.

Barring Dimitri Payet's corking goal of course.

Who needs the ball anyway? Newcastle have had nearly two-thirds of possession so far but it's not doing them much good.

They are enjoying a lot of the ball at the moment but, and this is what matters, they are doing very little with it.

West Ham look dangerous on the break with an abundance of pace at their disposal.

They can be guilty of overplaying at times though... This time, West Ham's Mark Noble plays a stupid square ball inside his own half, which is cut out by the visitors. Papiss Cisse chases in on goal but the ball is cleared by Angelo Ogbonna.

Massadio Haidara then spoons the ball wide from 20 yards for the Magpies.

That one is still rising. Manuel Lanzini picks the ball up centrally, 30 yards from goal, and the less said about the shot the better. The bloke in row Z caught it...

West Ham have got a bit of flair about them though. Lanzini, Victor Moses, Diafra Sakho, Dimitri Payet. The fans are loving it.

"That was a great opportunity. Unfortunately for Newcastle it fell on to Janmaat's left foot. It was a decent save but he should've given the goalkeeper no chance. This is a good period for Newcastle, certainly their best period of the game so far."
