Regardless of whether you think Diego Costa is a hero or villain, he is entertaining. If characters like him are suppressed the game will be worse off for it.

Somerset's Craig Overton yesterday got a two-game ban in county cricket for a series of swearing offences. How can two sports be officiated so differently? This is what kids watch and will follow if football is not careful. Bring in a points system similar to county cricket where points can be given for dissent, swearing and other attitude problems in football.

Anyone who has played football will have played against a Diego Costa type of character. Sly digs with the elbows, head-butts, kicks, even the odd punch. You just play with controlled aggression, use your skill and get your own back. Just don't get caught if you cross the line. It's the same in all sports. It's about choosing your moments. Look at Damien Delaney for Palace. He did a brilliant number on Costa when they played Chelsea, controlled aggression and skill.

  4. Are Palace down as favourites?published at 11:15 British Summer Time 20 September 2015

Tottenham v Crystal Palace (13:30 BST)

    Guy Mowbray
BBC Match of the Day commentator

"A measure of Palace's rapid progress under Alan Pardew could be in them not being seen as the 'lesser' side in games like this anymore.

"Some will even have them as favourites, especially with away form this year that's the envy of every other Premier League team.

"Pardew was right to beam about the strength of his 25-man squad this week. He's got options in every position.

Two wins in a week have boosted Spurs, and Christian Eriksen's impending return can only further improve them. Son Hueng-min's signing certainly has done.

"Everything points to an entertaining and even contest."

What would Brian Clough have made of Diego Costa's performance? If his manner of dealing with pitch invasions is anything to go by, I reckon it would have been a decent quote...

Graham : Irony is that Costa's aggression and determination is exactly what Arsenal have been lacking since Patrick Vieira.Their annual bullying at Chelsea.

    Every played with a Costa?published at 11:02

    Sunday League Costas

Jeff Jones:  Yes. Played against an absolute lunatic on the pitch, would argue with his own shadow. Nicest fella you could meet off it!

Hemmings: I was my under-16 side Costa stamping ankles, slaps, elbows, pushing, pulling...never got a card, lots of defenders got reds!

Dave Birty: Yes. I played centre back against a no. 9 from Harpurhey Utd. He made Costa look like a pussycat!

Controlled aggression is definitely an asset on the football pitch. Is Diego Costa in control? That's the killer question.

He has never been sent off for Chelsea, remember.

Obviously the Costa debate is a great spectacle, but let's be honest here he's taking football to an ugly place. He cheats and antagonises his opposition and if you try and compete with him, he throws himself to the floor flamboyantly.

Garth Crooks criticises referee Mike Dean

"Mike Dean is a great referee but he has got one fault - he wants to be the star too often.

"And it is really getting on my nerves because it's spoiling great games. Don't go looking for excuses to send players off, because that is not your job.

"People come to see great games of football, not to see you get overly officious like a petulant schoolteacher."

    Diego Costa: Hero or villain?

I'm an Arsenal fan and we shouldn't be vilifying Costa, he plays a certain way and it's up to the officials to decide if it's legal or not. Mike Dean should shoulder all responsibility, another dreadful decision to add to his growing highlight reel.

    Matt

I don't understand why society and specifically that within football deem more violent play (eg knee-high tackles, stamping on ankles, elbows, punching) as somehow more acceptable than a certain someone biting an opponent's upper arm. I'm not defending the latter, which is abhorrent, but why is one sort of violence deemed more acceptable?
