"I have been here a long time and I have seen managers come and go and if anyone is going to get us out of this hole it is going to be Jose Mourinho."

I'm not sure if Jose Mourinho is quite at the 'vote of confidence' stage just yet but the Chelsea boss has got one from his captain this morning., external

BBC pundit Alan Shearer: "When you look at how many managers they have had, they can't all be bad managers. Dick Advocaat is not a bad manager. There must be a fundamental problem at the club for none of these talented managers to work.

"I would be amazed if Sam Allardyce were to go in there in the current circumstances."

Former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert: "Advocaat went in there and did brilliantly at the beginning. They got him to change his mind to stay instead of leaving. He is not a bad manager".

Journalist Henry Winter: "His body language and everything he said indicates someone who is going. It is sad. At some point you have to look at the players. There is a culture of players going there and not playing. It is a proud club, like Newcastle. You can change the manager and yet they need to look at the players. Maybe they should look at the kids?

"Nigel Pearson will be one of the favourites for the job."

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

"So will it be the best of times or the worst of times for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers at today's Merseyside derby with Everton at Goodison Park?

"Rodgers is under pressure after Liverpool's indifferent start to the season, with Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti both heavily linked with the Anfield job.

"If Liverpool beat Everton, many of the clouds will roll away from Rodgers. Lose and the storm will be gathering around the embattled manager."

Former Everton striker Graeme Sharp speaking on BBC MOTD2: "This is going to be a massive game for both clubs. Yes, probably on league position Everton could be favourites. Liverpool have been up and down this season and some of the criticism of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been uncalled for.

"With big clubs you get added pressure but it has been a little bit over the top. It's too early in the season. I'm sure Liverpool will come with a strong run this season. Everton will know they have to be at their best."

  6. Under-pressure Brendan Rodgerspublished at 12:42

    MOTD2 Extra

BBC pundit Alan Shearer: "He is under pressure like any other manager. Whether you like it or not, the money that has been spent at Liverpool brings its own pressure. The recruitment hasn't been as good as it could have been at Liverpool."

Former Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert: "You'd have to go to the moon to block it (the criticism) out. All you do is get your head down. It depends how mentally strong you are. It's not nice to hear it but it is part and parcel of the game."

Journalist Henry Winter: "If you talk to Brendan Rodgers there is a very fine manager in the making in terms of his philosophy towards the game. He has got Daniel Sturridge back and that is huge for him.

"There does't appear to be too many natural fighters in the Liverpool team. I hope Rodgers gets time because some of criticism has been excessive."

Troy Porter: Jose made the mistake of giving the team a month off in pre-season - arrogance, complacent

Rian Hoskins: Rodgers has improved Liverpool from where they were but so many players he signs are eventually loaned out and then sold.

Alan Nicol: Fed up with hearing about Mourinho. How about more credit for Koeman and Southampton?

  9. 'Matic was humiliated'published at 12:37

    MOTD2 Extra

Jose Mourinho brought midfielder Nemanja Matic on at half-time, but then substituted the Serbian 28 minutes later.

BBC pundit Alan Shearer: It would have been embarrassing and humiliating for Matic. What does it say to the other players inside the camp? Something has gone on over the summer causing a ruption. There is a power battle between manager and the players.

Journalist Henry Winter: You could see it in Matic’s body language when he went off, he is a popular member of the dressing room. The player that is playing poorly is Ivanovic but he is the player Mourinho is being extremely loyal to.

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert: It can cause so many problems when you substitute a player like that, he is an established international and a fantastic player. When he came off there wasn’t even a handshake. There is a major issue there. It is not something I would do as a manager.

    MOTD2 Extra

BBC pundit Alan Shearer: Jose Mourinho has tried supporting the players and criticising them, but nothing has worked. It was as bad as ever yesterday. It is staggering how bad they have become.

Former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert: You have to take most criticism that comes your way as a manager. You try and protect your players. You have to have a middle line where you protect players in public but criticise them in private.

Journalist Henry Winter: He must have seen what has gone on at City and United. But that Chelsea squad is quite a small one,. He needed a couple of superstars. Maybe that is why he is picking fights.

    Problems at Chelsea?

    MOTD2 Extra

BBC pundit Alan Shearer: Jose Mourinho is challenging everyone, his back is up against the wall and he has come out fighting. There must be a massive issue in the dressing room for him to react, he has outed players in public but they are still not performing or listening or responding to him.

Journalist Henry Winter: Maybe he wanted to motivate his players this season and felt they needed stirring up, but he is picking fights.

Former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert:  You could see his speech from yesterday, I think he had it in his head, he must have some sort of issue and I think it goes back to the issues with club doctor Eva Carneiro.

It's a win/win for Liverpool today. A win will be a confidence boosting, fall off our chair, pinch ourselves moment and we can breathe, relax for two weeks and sit back and wait for Sturridge and Allen to get injured on international duty again. A loss will see the end of Brendan and a chance to cleanse and move on. Even the people who like him will breathe a huge sigh of relief as something just isn't right. Not sure what happens with a draw mind. Win or loss please.

How big is today's Merseyside derby for Brendan Rodgers?

The Liverpool boss has not lost to Everton since taking charge at Anfield, but the pressure seems to be growing on him following a mixed start to the season.

If he is feeling the strain, he certainly wasn't showing it in his news conference on Friday.

"I'll always work the best I can. But I'm not seeking any reassurances," said Rodgers when talking about his job.

"It's not something I'm worried about."
