The more Watford go on and play the way they did today, the more they will gain belief. Newcastle lacked belief, ability and confidence, and Steve McClaren is struggling to inject it.

The way things are going, McClaren could be out of a job come Christmas. The expectation at St James' Park is sky-high. Can he match that expectation? I doubt it. The fans need to see something, effort at least.

    Aston Villa 0-1 West Brom

West Brom manager Tony Pulis after his team moved into the top half: “The players have been good this week – it is the first week we've had the whole group together.

"Transfer deadline day was a nightmare. The Saido sideshow – that affected everyone at the club. You try to dampen it down but it was difficult. Then everyone went off for two weeks for the international break. But they trained well and have been good in what they’ve done. The organisation was excellent."

    Stoke 2-2 Leicester

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri, whose side remain unbeaten and stay in second place: "It is not so good that we have to come back. We started well for the first 12 minutes but they found a very good goal and the second was our mistake. After that we believed anything could be possible. But it won't be possible every time. I told the players we needed to show pride and strength and to continue to play.

"They were more desperate during the first half and we were more desperate in the second.

"We are now in a good way but it is important to continue this. The spirit is good. It is good for the table and important for us to work during training."

Man City v West Ham (17:30 BST)

    Steve Wilson
BBC Match of the Day commentator

"With rare away wins at Arsenal and Liverpool already under their belts, West Ham can travel to European under-achievers Manchester City with a spring in their step.

"However, West Ham's journey home might be rather less jaunty as Manchester City have won their last 11 Premier League games - the joint-third longest winning streak in the league's history - and haven't conceded a league goal in approaching 10 hours.

"Add to that West Ham's fairly hopeless recent record at the Etihad - seven consecutive defeats, three goals scored and 20 conceded - and the odds would appear to be heavily in the home side's favour."

Hold on. You know that four-pronged, £166m worth of Man City attack which we spoke about? Turns out that the City fans will have to wait a little longer to see it. Spain playmaker David Silva is OUT of the match after being injured in the warm-up. He is replaced by Jesus Navas.

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores after his side beat Newcastle for their second straight Premier League win: “We deserved it because we played really well. We have a very positive mentality and we always think we can win games.

“I am really pleased we have so much confidence. We are building a new team but we are playing as if we have played together for a long time."

    Stoke 2-2 Leicester

Leicester goalscorer Riyad Mahrez, whose team fought back from 2-0 down to avoid a first defeat: "We have a good team spirit and players who fight. We scored two goals and could have scored more. The most important thing is the team.

"We can do better than the first half but most importantly we didn't lose.

"This season is good for me. But without my team-mates I would not be able to do this."

    Real Madrid 1-0 Granada

Real Madrid legend Raul can enjoy his steak and glass of red tonight - he is still the Spanish club's all-time leading scorer. That's because Cristiano Ronaldo did not overtake him by scoring a hat-trick against La Liga rivals Granada. In fact, Ronaldo did not score at all, letting Karim Benzema to take the glory by bagging the winner in a 1-0 triumph at the Bernabeu.

    Aston Villa 0-1 West Brom

    Martin Keown
    BBC Radio 5 live

"Tim Sherwood has only been the Villa manager for 50-ish games. It's been desperate from Aston Villa today. Long balls are all they seem to have.

"We saw how disappointed he was after last week's result, but he needs to keep his head because he'll be hurting now after this defeat to Villa's local rivals.

"Essentially, West Brom were just too good."

    Swansea 0-0 Everton

Not a bore goalless draw but a draw nonetheless. Everton could, and probably should, have won it but they spurned a number of good chances. They also ended with 10 men but Kevin Mirallas' sending off came too late to have an impact.
