This is proper grassroots football. There's no space, there's no underfloor heating, there's no hot water, nothing at all, but that's what makes the player.

I'm pretty sure Salford have set a precedent this FA Cup first round, like Warrington did last year. So now the pressure is on the teams on the Saturday to follow suit.

We've got 28 games for you today.

Can Worcester City spring another surprise at Sheffield United? Will Portsmouth win their first FA Cup game in over five years? Will we see someone 'do a Richie Allen'?

This is the FA Cup, anything can happen...

  13. Villa, Giggs, Allen...published at 12:00

Yesterday evening at about 21:30 GMT Richie Allen's life changed forever.

The former Fleetwood and AFC Fylde man had been on the pitch for less than five minutes when he evaded the attentions of three Notts County players, played a one-two and slotted the ball into the Notts County net to send Salford into round two of the FA Cup.

It's a goal that is bound to join Ricky Villa's jinking run against Man City and Ryan Giggs' stunning solo effort against Arsenal in the folder of great FA Cup goals. Not bad for a player who has never even played in the Football League.

Of the 56 teams in action today some will be hoping to make their own slice of FA Cup history while others will just be hoping to avoid following Notts in being knocked out by a non-league side.

Welcome to Saturday's coverage of the FA Cup first round.
