Ah, dear. It's not easy being a Scotland fan. It will be very painful to watch our near neighbours in the finals next year. Well done to them, and especially to the Republic for a terrific result against Germany, despite the damage it did to Scotland's hopes. It's back to the drawing board. for the boys in dark blue. Thanks very much for your company this evening and for all your texts, tweets and comments on Facebook. Good night.

    Scotland striker Steven Fletcher

"We had to put a performance on today. We wanted to do our job, it's just disappointing, the goal at the end. I was happy with my performance. We can see that we've moved forward."

Eric the Hibby: "While I am disappointed to go out. We have improved, but not enough. We need more time. I think we have to look to the next tournament."

Kenny, Glasgow: "Strachan must go!! Always an excuse, fact is he's a FAILURE!"

Gary, Dundee: "It comes to the luck of the draw, look at Northern Ireland's and England's groups, simple. We had Poland and Germany. Gutted!"

Schlermie in Stepps: "James McCarthy, MOTM against world champions this evening. How was he allowed to slip through the net?"

Anonymous: "Because of the FIFA ranking system - teams who continue to fail will always get put in qualifying groups with much better teams. Without developing top quality talent we'll never be able to turn failure to success."

Dave from Coatbridge: "The truth is there is not one Scottish player that works at their game as hard as Ronaldo or Messi. We are miles behind and it's time for Strachan to go."

Stuart, Aberdeen: "Let's not forget that Scotland were seeded 3rd in this group."

Fraser, Lenzie: "If I go to my job tomorrow and say 'it doesn't matter if I failed, I worked hard' I'd get the sack. Pitiful excuses from Strachan. We finished forth - where we were seeded. No progress."

Peely in Edinburgh: "Greetings, what a joke the Scottish national fitbaw team has become! Can we trace it back to a certain school teacher, from nowhere, landing the top job in scottish fitbaw, he ushered in the era of over coaching that sucks the imagination out of players and replaces it with fear! Fitbaw is a simple game that has been destroyed by self important people on board the gravy train."

Joe in Fife (on Strachan): "He's exceptionally patronising."

Duncan, Hamilton: "Never really surprised that we will miss yet another major tournament. NO Scottish players playing on the continent, NO Scottish teams in the Champions League, NO Scottish teams outside Celtic left in Europe this year, NO ball games signs littering our streets with NO Scottish kids playing football. Time for a root and branch examination and restructuring of our game in Scotland."

Bob, Perth: "More countries than ever to qualify, all 3 other home nations will qualify, our aggregate against the worst Irish side in years was favourable and still we blow it..."

    Scotland manager Gordon Strachan

"The game on Sunday will be a hard one to take. Over the year we've had to put up with a lot. I don't want to speak about what went wrong just now. (Asked if it's too sore to talk about?) Yes. (Asked about his own future) The guys in the players are the priority at the moment. I have people in the building hurting at the moment."

    Scotland manager Gordon Strachan

"I do feel really bad for them. You have to hold your hands up and say well done (to Ireland). We have played against Poland and Ireland and not been beaten. I am hugely disappointed. After working hard for a year and at the end of the year for something like that to happen in the last seconds of a game...that's a year's work. I can't remember us getting anything lucky. Anything we got has been earned."

    Scotland manager Gordon Strachan

"If I'm like the rest of the nation, I am hugely disappointed for the players. The group of lads gave as much as they could give. That's what I see at the moment. I feel a bit sorry for them, to have put so much work in and to have scored two wonderful goals. I am proud of them. They have been a bit unfortunate."

Anonymous: "Once again sections of the media are misguided about the truth Scotland did not qualify because they were not good enough when you have 10 games in a group it is not bad luck but lack of ability. Scotland simply does not have enough children playing football."

Kurt, Stranraer: "We should have went for it at the Aviva went for a draw the same as Walter Smith did in Marseille all them years ago have to go for it when its in your own hands."

Rob from Bradford: "Luck is ALWAYS with a better team."

Andy, Falkirk: "How can we score 4 goals against Poland & 3 against Germany & still not qualify?"

Dave, Fife: "Time to start promoting the u21s too the full squad and probably look to 2020, or do we still stick with this mediocre bunch. We will not qualify for WC 2018 with most of this current mob."

Fergie in Aberdeen: "Strachan must go!! For his decision to never play Griffiths a proven goalscorer and not playing Maloney from the start tonight! And why bring in SHINNIE a player in form if ur not going to use him!! The nucleus of the team should be Shinnie, Scott Brown, Maloney and Griffiths!!"

    Former Scotland captain Willie Miller

"Overall they were a better side than us. We could have been well out of it by half-time. The manager got them in a better shape and made them less vulnerable. It was the worst free-kick you are ever going to see. It was totally mis-hit. But we should have pushed up to the 18-yard line."

  18. Postpublished at 21:51 British Summer Time 8 October 2015

I'm still trying to get my head around that leveller for Poland. It was a dreadful free-kick that somehow made its way through the serried ranks of dark blue jerseys, hit the post, rolled along the line and who was first to meet it? The great Robert Lewandowski, of course.

BBC Scotland reporter Chick Young at Hampden

"Every fan leaving the ground will feel the same. The heart and soul has been ripped from us. This was going to be my final campaign. That's the tin hat on that now. I feel absolutely torn apart and shattered. I won't sleep tonight. People will wonder how on earth that happened. It's always us."
