BBC Scotland reporter Chris McLaughlin at Hampden

"Scotland now look like a side who believe in themselves. Passes they struggled with in the first half are now coming off for them. David Marshall has also pulled off a couple of crucial saves in the Scotland goal to frustrate the visitors. Shaun Maloney coming on for Steven Naismith could provide some added guile through the middle of the park."

David Marshall dives to his left to parry a rasping drive from Grzegorz Krychowiak. What tension at Hampden. There are 23 nervy minutes to go. It's still goalless in Dublin.

Now it's Poland who look rattled. With Hampden a cauldron of noise, Alan Hutton finds the energy to supply a cross into the box. New national hero Steven Fletcher rises to nod it home but directs it straight at the keeper.

It will be debated in hostelries for years - which Scotland strike against Poland was the better: Matt Ritchie's or Steven Fletcher's? The Sunderland striker didn't bother to take a touch when the ball came to him on the right of the box. Rather, he just wrapped his left foot around it and watched with glee as his first-time shot flew past Lukasz Fabianski. Unbelievable comeback!

Poland claim for a penalty but defender Grant Hanley knew nothing about it as the ball flew off the head of an attacker and hit his hand, which was tucked tightly against his chest.

Scott Brown is booked for a challenge on Robert Lewandowski. We have 56 minutes on the clock.

BBC Scotland reporter Chris McLaughlin a Hampden

"Scotland look a side with more bite and belief in this second half. The wide men are stretching the game and Scott Brown is also starting to drive from the middle of the park the way he does for Celtic. The Poles still look dangerous though and fancy their chances when they come forward."

Scotland build the play patiently but accurately, which has not often been the case in this match, as James Forrest passes to Matt Ritchie, who releases Alan Hutton down the right and the Aston Villa defender's cross is just too far away from Steven Fletcher, lurking in the Poland box.

Now here's a stat to offer succour to Scotland fans. Last season, Bournemouth's Matt Ritchie had more goals and assists combined (32) than any other player in England's top two divisions except Sergio Aguero.

Poland's Robert Lewandowski is human after all. The big striker pokes a cross by Lukasz Piszczek over David Marshall's bar from eight yards. It was a tricky one to take, coming over his right shoulder.

  14. CLOSE!published at 20:50 British Summer Time 8 October 2015

Steven Naismith slides in at the back post and can only direct Steven Whittaker's cross out towards the corner flag.

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:49 British Summer Time 8 October 2015

David Marshall keeps Scotland's hopes alive with a low, right-handed save to deny Arkidiusz Milik after slick build-up play in the opening move of then second half.

  18. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:46 British Summer Time 8 October 2015

Just to confirm, there has been no scoring in Dublin. Scotland need to win at Hampden if the Irish earn a point against the world champions.

    Former Scotland captain Willie Miller

"We have been rank at the back! The two full-backs have been ripped open. Alan Hutton has been ripped open on three or four occasions. Even Whittaker on the other side has been wide open too. It has been a totally indisciplined performance but one we have got away with. It has been all about heart, not playing with the head, but it has got us back equal, which is incredible."
