The Republic of Ireland are still leading Germany 1-0. Only two goals for Germany in the final few seconds can save Scotland.

    BBC Scotland reporter Chris McLaughlin

"After a poor first half that started with a Lewandowski goal and finished with a stunning Matt Ritchie equaliser, Scotland took control of proceedings at Hampden and started to believe that it could be their night. An equalling outstanding Steven Fletcher goal just after the hour mark and it was dreamland. But what a cruel and nightmarish ending. That's it for Scotland - dreams of France are dead and they died once again on the bed of glorious failure. Bring on the World Cup."

Poland are beginning to press Scotland back and Tomasz Jodlowiec has a shot blocked and Lukasz Piszczek pings one over the bar. Meanwhile, in Dublin Germany's Thomas Muller side-foots the ball wide of the Ireland goal from 12 yards! He falls to his knees in disbelief.

  17. GOALpublished at 21:17 British Summer Time 8 October 2015

Well, would you believe it? Shane Long has put Ireland in front against Germany. As things stand, Scotland could not catch the Irish because they would move on to 18 points. And Scotland would need Ireland to beat Poland in the final game, and make sure they beat Gibraltar, of course, to reach the play-offs.

As things stand, with Scotland winning and the Republic of Ireland drawing, if Scotland beat Gibraltar on Sunday they will be in the play-offs no matter what happens between Poland and Ireland in their match. But a goal in Glasgow or Dublin in the next 20 minutes would change matters.
