Andrew: Man Utd's golden era is truly over and partly because Ferguson left a basket case. Sacking LvG will not change anything except pushing them to further instability. Put an inexperienced manager like Giggs in charge and this could hasten worse to come like the golden drop of 1973. Job done.

  2. 'Should be an entertaining afternoon'published at 13:55

Bournemouth v Crystal Palace (15:00 GMT)

    Mark Scott
MOTD commentator at the Vitality Stadium

"Tis' certainly the season to be jolly for these two at the moment, both are on great recent runs and have been excellent to watch as well.

"Understandably, Bournemouth's back-to-back wins over Chelsea and Manchester United caught the eye, but I was also impressed with the assured manner in which they dictated the game when I saw them make it three straight victories at West Brom last weekend.

"However, beating Palace - especially on their travels - is a bigger ask than seeing off Chelsea or United on current form.

"At the risk of jinxing it, given how these two play and the confidence they'll both have right now, it should be an entertaining afternoon!"

    Stoke 2-0 Man Utd

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has gone big at half-time, bringing on dropped captain Wayne Rooney for Memphis Depay, who was at fault for Stoke's opener.

Stoke bring on Marco van Ginkel for Glenn Whelan.

The second half is under way - dedicated live text here.

  7. Midfield problemspublished at 13:45

    Stoke 2-0 Man Utd

    Jimmy Armfield
BBC Radio 5 live at the Britannia Stadium

"The Manchester United team has to improve somehow in the second half. Louis van Gaal needs some strength in the team. Morgan Schneiderlin has that. Wayne Rooney is named on the bench so he must be fit.

"The one they wanted here today was solidity at the back and no errors. It happened though. The first goal was a walk in and United were scattered, they have not recovered from that. The second goal was well struck but nobody was closing him down.

"Van Gaal has to do something about the midfield area. There are good players in this team, but we have not seen them."

Stuart Tunstal: Big difference is Stoke attackers have had to fight their way to the top. Depay, Martial and other big money players with big egos have been spoon fed. An arrogant manager as well to match.

Alex, Somerset: Another Louis van howler. Forget signing a striker in January and sign Guardiola NOW!

Shaun, Somerset: Crickey! I see LvG has saved his portion of Turkey for today with former Red Devil Mark Hughes happy to offer him as much 'stuffing' as possible... Time for Giggs.

Jeffery Nabong: Van Gaal is living on past reputation. His authoritarian style of management is slowly and surely killing this team.

Marko Arnautovic has just missed a glorious chance to put Stoke 3-0 up at the Britannia, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling pulled apart by one pass from Bojan.

If Louis van Gaal needed a big display from his players this afternoon they are not keeping their end of the bargain.

  19. 'A Boxing Day shock?'published at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2015

    Chelsea v Watford (15:00 GMT)

    John Motson
    MOTD commentator at Stamford Bridge

"I'll be interested to see how the Chelsea crowd react to the new manager and particularly the players.

"They gave certain players a tough reception last weekend but I don't expect the atmosphere to be as toxic. Oscar produced his best display of the season last weekend and Guus Hiddink will be hoping to get Diego Costa scoring again.

"Talking of goals, Watford are not struggling to find the back of the net.

"They've surprised plenty of teams this season already, in part due to their willingness to play two strikers. Perhaps the bookies will get a Boxing Day shock too - some have them at 7-1 to win on Saturday."

  20. 'Turning the corner'published at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2015

    Newcastle v Everton (15:00 GMT)

    Martin Fisher
MOTD commentator at St James' Park

"Just when Newcastle looked to have turned a corner with those impressive wins over Liverpool and Tottenham they come crashing back to reality with last week's draw at home to hapless Aston Villa.

"The Toon are still too close to the relegation zone for comfort. In fact the last time they were this low in the table on Christmas Day was in 1988 and they went down that season.

"Everton's frustrating form is still too patchy for them to kick on. Far too many draws means they remain cast as mid-table also-rans.

"I can't see past a 1-1 scoreline in this one either. With Romelu Lukaku scoring again, naturally."
