Tommo, Watford: Last Boxing Day managed to get to THREE matches. St Albans v Hemel at 12.45, Wycombe v Luton at 15:00, Watford v Wolves at 17:30. It was a slight overdose and I don't think I went to another game for at least a few weeks.

There are seven games in League One today yet to be postponed, and they all kick off at good old-fashioned 15:00 GMT.

Bottom club Colchester face Southend in an Essex derby and Shrewsbury face relegation rivals Fleetwood - although neither side can drop into the bottom four today because of games called off below them.

Swindon are at home to third-placed Gillingham, fourth-placed Coventry host Port Vale, Doncaster are at home to Scunthorpe, Peterborough face Chesterfield and Swindon.

  5. 'Rooney can still cut it at number nine'published at 12:45 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2015

Stoke v Man Utd (12:45 GMT)

    Trevor Sinclair
Former England winger on Football Focus

"With runners going past him and beyond him I think Wayne Rooney still can play as a number nine. But there isn't much creativity in the side.

"The freedom at Manchester United is gone. They look restrained. It’s about risk and reward, and at the moment United are not taking the risks."

  6. LVG's last game?published at 12:42 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2015

Stoke v Man Utd (12:45 GMT)

    Alistair Mann
MOTD commentator at the Britannia Stadium

"If the newspaper reports are accurate then Manchester United's match at Stoke could be Louis van Gaal's last as their manager.

"There appear to be three scenarios if he departs; Jose Mourinho takes over, Ryan Giggs succeeds Van Gaal or an interim manager is appointed, possibly Giggs, with Pep Guardiola taking the helm in the summer.

"Few scribes offer encouragement for the Dutchman. It's not simply about United's recent poor results but the manner of them. Even Stoke boss Mark Hughes recently referred to a "United way" that demands entertainment at its core.

"It's no coincidence that Hughes has transformed Stoke's methods, typified by the stylish way they saw off Manchester City earlier this month.

"While Hughes will be keen for his side to replicate that performance, Van Gaal won't want to lie down either, which all points to a fascinating start to the Boxing Day programme."

Joe Murray: Boxing Day 2012 at Old Trafford - Manchester United v Newcastle United. one of the best matches I've ever witnessed. The attacking intent from both sides was absolutely superb, and to be fair either could have taken all three points but for a divine angled pass from Michael Carrick to Javier Hernandez in the 92nd minute (Fergie Time) tomake it 4-3and send the place into pandemonium... And onto a 20th league title!

Jack: It's about time Rooney was dropped, Schweinsteiger should be the captain for obvious reasons, that's where Van Gaal made a mistake. Now with a more mobile, pacy front line hopefully United play with a bit more freedom and show us what they can do.

Gerry: Well this will be a wake-up call for Rooney. He's a kind of fighter and will improve after this drop. LVG should've done it before.

Stephen Kennedy: Big call from LVG to drop Rooney but also a big call not to play Schneiderlin. Stoke will fancy their chances.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "It is our game plan. With this game plan it is better to pay with Ander Herrera instead of Wayne Rooney.

"It is not a drastic measure, it is my gameplan. That's for us, not for you! We have done everything we can do, I have seen a fantastic attitude of my players so I fully believe in this game.

"The conditions are the main factor but we have to cope with it. You can say that you don't like wind but you have to cope with it."

  14. Wayne, meet the bench. Bench, this is Wayne...published at 12:30

Stoke v Man Utd (12:45 GMT)

This afternoon is the first time that Wayne Rooney has started a Premier League or a Champions League game on the bench for Manchester United since 28 January 2014.

It feels like a big moment for Rooney. And maybe an even bigger one for Louis van Gaal.

    Masterstroke or misadventure?
