Remember Cuco Martina's goal for Southampton against Arsenal on Saturday?

Morgan Schneiderlin tries the same for Manchester United after being teed up by Wayne Rooney, but the Frenchman's effort - this time at the near post - is sliced a little too much and goes narrowly wide.

Louis van Gaal wanted a reaction from his players, they've responded to his calls so far.

"The line between winning and losing is very small, the technology in England is clearly working well so it was definitely not a goal."

On Ake's red card: "I had an amazing view but I do not like to criticise the performance of the referees."

    Everton 3-4 Stoke

Everton manager Roberto Martinez, speaking to Match of the Day, on the award of a late penalty to Stoke: "You have to be very sure sure to make a decision like that. Looking at the replay it shows John Stones touches the ball. That decision is hard to take. To get a decision wrong like that so late in the game makes you feel furious and is unacceptable."

    Norwich 2-0 Aston Villa

Norwich boss Alex Neil, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think getting the three points was the priority. The second goal killed the game.

"I think in these types of games there is so much pressure on the players, the result is massive before kick off. We got the result we needed so I am really pleased.

"I am delighted for the players, they have worked extremely hard this year. We know we could have done better in the 19 games, so hopefully we will do better in the next 19. If we can do that, we will be fine."

  15. 'All that Shaqiri had been missing was goals'published at 17:25

    Everton 3-4 Stoke

Stoke manager Mark Hughes, speaking to Match of the Day: "It was end to end and I thought both sides came out with great credit. It's a tough ask playing Saturday then Monday over the Christmas period. In fairness to us I thought we were excellent and scored some great goals.

"It takes time to understand what it is required at Premier League level. It doesn't matter what level you have played at before, the Premier League is a big ask.

"The only thing lacking up until today for Shaqiri was goals - performances had been fine - but now he has added that. He has that quality - it's his first mark in terms of goals and I'm sure there will be more to come."

Way to spoil the Xherdan Shaqiri party, Alan.

I've watched a replay, I think he meant it, but then I've not scored hundreds of goals in professional football.

"The condition of the pitch made it difficult to play how we usually playbut we showed great maturity.  We need to feel proud for the players, it was a great effort after only playing 48 hours ago.

Can they win the title: "In football a lot can happen the most important thing is we believe, we have a strong squad to squad to fight for it."

Stoke fans enjoyed Louis van Gaal's managerial uncertainty

How much longer can he hang on? Will he walk before he is pushed? All questions being asked about Louis van Gaal at the moment.

The Manchester United boss even said he could "quit by myself" after Stoke City beat his side 2-0 to condemn them to a fourth straight defeat on Saturday.

The Dutchman, under pressure after seven games without a victory, was asked at his post-match news conference whether he feared he would be sacked.

"It is not always the club that has to fire or sack me," he said.

"Sometimes I do that by myself, but I am the one who wants to speak first with the board of Manchester United and my members of staff and my players, not with you."
