I didn't see a hint of a smile from the seemingly-emotionless Manuel Pellegrini at full-time. But the ice-cool Chilean must be tempted to feel rather smug with himself.

His decision to rest his stars for the FA Cup trip to Chelsea has well and truly paid off. City's finest Champions League performance? Certainly up there with the win in Sevilla back in December.

PSV Eindhoven fight to live another day after holding Atletico Madrid despite playing the final 22 minutes with 10 men following Gaston Pereiro's red card.

The Dutch champions weathered a late Atletico storm to frustrate Diego Simeone's side, who wasted several chances to take a lead back to Spain for the second leg.

Atletico, the 2014 runners-up, will start the return match in three weeks time favourites to advance to the quarter-finals.

Alan Ferguson: Priceless. Toure can't head one from 4 feet then buries one from 18 yards out. Deserved.

Smiles are all etched all over the City players as they shake hands with their opponents and the match officials. Skipper Vincent Kompany leads his players over to the 700 or so travelling fans to thank them for their support.

Late notice, expensive flights, freezing temperatures...all well worth it for a wonderful win.

"Blue Moon!! You saw me standing alone..."

All the noise inside Kiev's Olympic Stadium is coming from the away end as the full-time whistle goes.

Without wishing to sound all Billy Davies (niche Football League reference alert)...job done.

Here is Kelechi Iheanacho as he replaces Sergio Aguero. Into two minutes of injury-time. City cruising towards the last eight.

"That was 10 times harder to score than the header that Toure missed. He just caressed that left footed and curled it around the goalkeeper. The keeper had absolutely no chance."

    Yaya Toure

Beautiful! And just what Manchester City deserve. A patient build-up from City explodes into life when Yaya Toure exchanges passes with Fernandinho, then curls a gorgeous left-footed shot into the left corner from 20 yards.

Yep, here we go. City are preparing young forward Kelechi Iheanacho. Off comes the padded tracksuit, he'll be on for his European debut in a mo.

City still haven't made a change yet. Time for a fresh pair of legs and, more importantly, time to run the clock down?

A little bit of the sting has gone in the last couple of moments. City content, Dynamo looking out of ideas. Into the final five...

If I was a betting man then I still wouldn't throw a pound on this game finishing 2-1 in City's favour. But I wouldn't know whether to stick it on 2-2 or 1-3 either. Balancing rather precariously is this one.

Oh my word. How has Yaya Toure not sealed this match? City hold off another Kiev attack before going back on the offensive themselves. Raheem Sterling does all the hard work, twisting and turning on the left, dinking up a delightful ball into the Dynamo six-yard box on a platter. It may as well have a salad garnish on it. But Toure cannot snaffle the chance, somehow heading wide with the goal gaping.

  17. GREAT SAVE!published at 79 mins

    Dynamo Kiev 1-2 Man City

The action switches to the other end and Joe Hart makes a world class one-handed save to stop a shot from goalscorer Vitaliy Buyalskiy, diving low to his right to do so.

That could so easily have been 2-2.

City knock the ball around close to the halfway line, then spring forward again with the same intent and ferocity that they did in the first half. Twice in fact.

The away side carve open the Dynamo defence, like a sharp knife through a succulent piece of roast beef. Sergio Aguero is inches away from turning in a low cross from the right.

Seconds later City attack from the right again and this time Aguero does connect with the ball.

Dynamo keeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy does just about enough.
