France have started full of energy and will look to get on the front foot early on. They'll want the supporters on their side and to not let any disgruntlement or negativity show through.

The first effort on goal is from Romania midfielder Mihai Pintilii, but the Steaua Bucharest man's strike from around 30 yards out flies over the crossbar.

"Paul Pogba is undoubtedly a magnificent player. He's very young but he has a lot of big game experience. He is part of a very good team and he has to concentrate on a couple of roles  - not try to be everything to everyone."

Jonathan Pearce on BBC commentary describes this as "Alice in Wonderland meeting a rave party".

I'd say it's more, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, minus the Oompah Loompahs.

Here he is, a loud cheer rings around Stade de France as DJ David Guetta emerges from inside a box in the middle of the pitch.

"Tonight's gonna be a good night," are the lyrics.

The home fans will be hoping that's very much the case.

"I don't know if France have to win the tournament for it to be a success for them, but I do think they can win it. They are equipped to win it. We've not had a team like this since 2006. You have to have a certain amount of luck. I think they can win it and I hope they do."

On England's chances of winning Euro 2016: "For me England are going to have to use this tournament as preparation for Russia and the 2018 World Cup.I just don't see it now."

Euro 2016 hosts France are heavily fancied to win tonight's opening game against Romania and the tournament as a whole but is there a shock on the cards?

If France need to heed any warning, they should look back to Euro 2004.

Portugal, as hosts, were hot favourites to beat Greece in the opening game only to lose 2-1 in front of thousands of expectant home fans at Porto's Estadio do Dragao.

A Georgios Karagounis goal and Angelos Basinas penalty put Greece 2-0 up before Cristiano Ronaldo headed in what was merely a consolation for Portugal. Ouch.

Greece went on to shock everybody that year when they won the final - again proving party poopers by beating Portugal in the final. Double ouch.
