I doubt he would be this relaxed this close to kick-off if he was still France manager but Raymond Domenech was all smiles when I bumped into him outside Stade de France.

"We will win, yes of course, but it will not be easy," Domenech told me.

He is now manager of the Brittany regional - or is it national? - team. I think that is probably a job with a lot less pressure than being in charge of Les Bleus.

This month's European Championship finals will be the biggest ever, with 51 games staged at 10 locations, including new stadiums in Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon and Nice.

Building the new venues and renovating historic grounds such as Marseille's Stade Velodrome has cost 1.6bn euros (£1.2bn) - modernisation which was necessary, organisers say, because France did not fully capitalise on hosting the 1998 World Cup.

France are here, they've arrive at Stade de France.

The players look slick in their blue designer suits, top buttons of their pristine white shirts undone, perfectly coiffured hair and beards shaped as they enter the arena.

They'll be feeling a little sick inside the pits of their stomachs now. Starting to feel it where you are?

The Romania coach carrying the players and staff has just entered the car park in Stade de France.

The France vehicle is making its way through Paris with a police escort and should be at the stadium shortly.

Good planning that, none of this getting stuck in traffic nonsense today.

Security is understandably very strict on your way into the Stade de France - I had my bag stopped and searched three times - outside the Metro station then twice more as I got nearer to the stadium. The police presence in the middle of Paris and near the Eiffel Tower fanzone has increased as this week has gone on and the same has happened here.

I am inside now - and the doors have just opened to the public too. Some very early arrivers are in their seats, but when I got here there was a full rehearsal of La Marseillaise going on - inspiring stuff.

Amid all the excitement surrounding the tournament, let's remember the serious back drop on which Euro 2016 lies.

Friday, 13 November 2015 is a date that Parisiens and those involved in the attacks on the city will ever forget.

130 people lost their lives and hundreds injured after gunmen and suicide bombers hit a concert hall, tonight's venue Stade de France, restaurants and bars, almost simultaneously.

France remains under a state of emergency and so more than 90,000 police, soldiers and private guards will be deployed at the tournament.

So, after 14 months of football in the confederation of Europe, where 266 matches were played and 694 goals scored it comes down to this.

An extended European Championship sees 552 players in action for 24 teams, playing a total of 51 games on 23 days, for one trophy.

If that doesn't ignite the footballing flame inside you, nothing will. We are going to be swimming in a lake of the beautiful game.

    Let's set this tournament up...

Those tears that you shed when your team remarkably won the league title, claimed a cup triumph or were relegated from the division will have been drying up by now.

In a year ending in an odd number, you would have had to wait through June and July before being able to resume the banter with your mates in August.

2016, though, is a special summer where we are all off on a jolly across the border.

Can England's Three Lions of Rooney, Vardy and Kane overcome the Welsh dragon Bale and will Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland have luck on their side?

Tournament football brings around drama, excitement and penalty shootouts, so prepare for four weeks of elation and anguish. Sorry Scotland :-(

Right, forget about England, Wales and whoever else for now, the focus from here on in will be on the opening game between France and Romania.

Stade de France is starting to fill up already and we are still over two hours away from kick-off.

And there you have it. As Wales skipper Ashley Williams say, it is about getting the job done and they've come through that news conference unscathed.

All Welsh eyes on Bordeaux now as they face Slovakia (kick-off 17:00 BST) on Saturday.

Wales captain Ashley Williams: "I've thought about this a lot. It will be a very proud moment for myself and the rest of the boys. It is important we focus on getting the job done. We will enjoy it but only if we perform to the way we can."
