Former Manchester United and Denmark goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel on Twitter: "Re Bale goal, look at the wall. That's the biggest mistake by Joe Hart, don't put one up. If he doesn't he can start in the MIDDLE of the goal so even if the ball is all over the place he can move quicker. Also the wall becomes a target only 10 yards away, gives better aim for Bale.

"Well done England. But you have to question team selection. Next time I'm sure Roy starts his in form players.

"Wales never invested enough to get a result, you defend that deep, you invite the other team to attack, that leads to chances and goals."

    Alan Shearer
    Ex-England captain on BBC One

Wayne Rooney is the only England player who has been tremendous in both games. He was man of the match in the first game, and he won't be far away in this game too. He wanted to dictate the play, grab the game by the scruff of the neck and played very well.

It was a little bit too far to see out a win on the back of Gareth Bale's free-kick. England had too much strength for us.

England striker Jamie Vardy: "Everyone wants to be a part of the starting line up but it is a team game, we are all in this together and when you come off the bench you want to make an impact and luckily I did today.

"We thought we were playing well. The message was simple - to carry on doing what we were doing and hopefully the goals would come and they did.

"We just want to take each game as it comes, we got the win today and hopefully we can win the next game."

Does it make you favourite to start in the next game? "We will have to wait and see. I will be trying my hardest in training and we will see in the next game."

England need a draw against Slovakia to go through, Wales need a win against Russia to be sure.

    Alan Shearer
    Ex-England captain on BBC One

It's no fluke the ball fell to Jamie Vardy for his goal. He has that striker's instinct.

As for Daniel Sturridge's goal, it's that lack of back-lift from him that beat Wayne Hennessey. The keeper has no chance of reacting to it.

"Strikers have an instinct you cannot teach. They go in the right place at the right time. So Sterling and Lallana don't get in the same positions as the two substitutes."

  13. 'I am very proud'published at 16:04 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

Wales forward Gareth Bale: "Obviously it is massively disappointing but I am very proud of everybody. We gave everything like we always do and I have said before if we go out but have given 100% then we can't do any more. We are disappointed at the moment but we are strong inside and the tournament is not over yet. We will go into the next game with even more strength.

"We keep fighting all the way. We will keep fighting to qualify."

  14. 'Credit to Roy Hodgson'published at 16:02 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    Rio Ferdinand
    Former England defender

England were probing, which was good to see in the second half. We criticised Roy Hodgson for his subs in the last game but we have to give him credit this time. He bought five strikers and that's why they flooded the box and the chances fell to the right people.

I wonder what has happened to Roy Hodgson in recent weeks? He really went for broke at half-time there and threw forwards on all game. He's turned into Kevin Keegan.

We were so close to getting a result but all credit to Roy Hodgson, he put goalscoring players on and they won it for them. Jamie Vardy, it's no coincidence it dropped to him. Daniel Sturridge played a nice one-two for the winner. It's sickening for the Welsh boys but both teams are still in it.

  17. 'I'm not getting excited'published at 15:59 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

England striker Daniel Sturridge: "It's a great feeling. Unbelievable. I am grateful to the gaffer for the opportunity and God for allowing me to score. It is a brilliant feeling.

"It is only one more game in the group, so no-one wants to get too excited but the atmosphere is unbelievable and the togetherness between the two countries here is unbelievable.

"It is great to help the boys win the game, my brother and my cousin have travelled here to the game and it is great for them to experience this."

  18. 'Wales should beat Russia'published at 15:58 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    England 2-1 Wales

Former Wales striker Nathan Blake on BBC Radio 5 live: "There was a lot of talking before the game and we have come out of it without a point. As England showed after the first game, you have to dust yourself down quickly and come back.

"Wales should go and beat Russia. Russia are one of the poorest teams in the tournament so far."

  19. What now for Wales?published at 15:57 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    England 2-1 Wales

Wales play Russia in their final game and they are well placed to go through. As are England now.

England have four points, Wales and Slovakia are on three.

  20. England deserved itpublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 16 June 2016

    England 2-1 Wales

    Alan Shearer
    Ex-England captain on BBC One

"It was much better second half. Roy did what he had to do, he gambled and brought the subs on. When you bring subs on they have to make an impact and the two guys have done that. They deserved it. England stretched them a bit more, we got bodies into the box and the guys that came on produced."
