This corner flag got closer to Toni Kroos than any Ukraine player in Germany's opener.

The Real Madrid man played 109 passes, completing 94% in a display which saw him stand out like a beacon of light.

If Poland don't get to him somehow, he will undoubtedly conduct the orchestra with aplomb.

Intriguing watching Germany go through their warm-up routine. An entire squad in one half but Thomas Muller - der Raumdeuter (or space investigator) - always seems to have acres to himself.

Muller is without a goal or assist in six games at the Euros. I wonder if that will change this evening, after all he has 10 goals and six assists in 13 World Cup games.

It has been very changeable in Paris today but right now it is a cool and cloudy evening with the odd hint of blue sky.

There's some strong costume and tin foil cup action in the Stade de France stands as kick off approaches.

Both sets of fans are well up for this one.

A win for either Germany or Poland tonight will send them through to the last 16.

Ukraine will definitely go out if Poland avoid defeat, but a Germany win will keep their hopes alive.

Poland's record against Germany suggests there's more than a bit of a mismatch.

In 19 games over the course of 81 years Poland have failed to beat them, but they finally got that elusive first victory during qualifying for this year's Euros.

They won 2-0 in Warsaw, with Germany winning the return leg 3-1. If there's anything we can take from those two games, it's that we should be in for some goals tonight.

Intrigued, I wandered over to this chap outside the Stade de France.

"Where are you from," I enquired.

    "Germany," he answered.

"So why the England shirt?" I asked.

    "Because it's my favourite."

    Case closed.

Got Thomas Muller in your Fantasy Football team? Get him out sharpish!

And before you say, 'what are you on about, you fool', check this curious little stat out.

The Bayern Munich striker has bagged 10 goals at World Cup finals, but at a European Championship he has got zip.

It's not happened for him at the Euros so far. I suppose the very fact I've highlighted this means he's destined to grab a hat-trick tonight...

Germany coach Joachim Low had never made a change between the first and second match at a major championship before but he has here.

Central defender Mats Hummels had made it very clear this week that he was fit to play and he comes in for Shkodran Mustafi in the only change from the team that defeated Ukraine.

Two changes for Poland - Lukas Fabianski starts in goal with Wojciech Szczesny injured, while Kamil Grosicki comes in for Bartosz Kapustka in midfield.

Germany XI: Neuer, Hector, Howedes, Hummels, Khedira, Ozil, Draxler, Müller, Boateng, Kroos, Gotze.

Poland XI: Fabiański, Pazdan, Jedrzejczyk, Maczynski, Milik, Lewandowski, Krychowiak, Grosicki, Glik, Blaszczykowski, Piszcze

Poland's Robert Lewandowski knows a thing or two about getting the better of German defences, having been the Bundesliga's top scorer in two of the past three seasons. But if the Bayern Munich striker is to open his Euro 2016 account on Thursday he will have to outwit three club team-mates - goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and centre-backs Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels.

Lewandowski was effectively shackled by Northern Ireland in the Poles' opener. Of the 18 shots attempted by Poland, none came from Lewandowski. Instead it was strike partner Arkadiusz Milik who earned them a first European Championship win.

Ajax forward Milik netted six times in qualifying, including the opening goal in a 2-0 win against the Germans in October 2014. German defender Boateng admits "we have to be careful, they have good forwards - and not just Lewandowski."

I'm sure tonight will be strictly business for a team that knows about getting things done but really, anyone in the German team could be forgiven if they were a little distracted at times.

Certainly, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer looked in reflective mood as he stood on his own in the centre of the pitch taking in his surroundings an hour or so ago.

Jerome Boateng may have described it as "not relevant" in the build up to this match but this is the German team's first visit to the Stade de France since they played France here on 13 November.

That, of course, was the night of the terror attacks in France and the German squad remained in their dressing room overnight before returning home the following day.

I say, and I must stress this is my view and my view alone, that we haven't had a classic, but we have had some headline-making results. There was Wales beating Slovakia, Iceland drawing with Portugal and just now, Northern Ireland's hugely impressive 2-0 win over Ukraine.

That means Germany, Poland and Northern Ireland are all level on three points in Group C.

Will someone move clear at the top tonight, though?

  16. The World Cup winners versus the dark horses?published at 19:00

We've seen last-minute goals, unexpected results and a Cristiano Ronaldo strop so far at Euro 2016, but what I don't feel we have seen yet is a real classic. A game that, in 10 years time, we'll all be talking about fondly as a fixture that was synonymous with this tournament.

However, put together the reigning world champions against a side that is being billed as tournament dark horses and possesses a striker of the highest quality in Robert Lewandowski, then I think Germany versus Poland could well be our first tournament classic.

Just try and keep your hands out of your trousers for 90 minutes please, Jogi...
