  3. Berahino staying at the Baggies?published at 08:32 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2016

    West Brom

    Mikey Burrows
    BBC WM Sport

"We understand West Brom still hope to keep Saido Berahino regardless of how much Newcastle or Tottenham offer today. Jeremy Peace is a tough negotiator, as he proved back in August, and sources are suggesting he’s unlikely to sell to a potential rival anyway.

"Albion do hope to bring in Alex Pritchard on loan from Spurs, and would listen to offers for defenders Cristian Gamboa and Sebastien Pocognoli."

    Daily Express

It is perhaps telling that there's very little in the way of transfer rumours on the back page of today's newspapers. Instead, pretty much all of them have gone with Sunday's surprising news that John Terry will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season.

The Daily Express does also have a snippet about Saido Berahino, claiming that Newcastle will make an improved offer for the West Brom striker after their initial bid was knocked back yesterday.

    The fan's view

Once again Albion go into the final hours of a transfer window lacking players that possess pace or creativity. We are also in desperate need of a goalscorer with Saido Berahino continually underused by Baggies' boss Tony Pulis, Rickie Lambert way past his best and Salomon Rondon simply not good enough.

Midfield reinforcements would also be welcomed, with a number of injuries to key players starting to bite deep into what is a small Albion squad.

Frustratingly any new signings are dependent on Berahino leaving for big money, and even if he does leave the old 'it was too late to sign anybody' excuse will probably be wheeled out by the Baggies' hierarchy.

    Pato – Corinthians to Chelsea

"Pato has the all-round attributes to be a good player, with plus 15 stats for technique, flair, and first touch, but poor marks for bravery and determination make him a risky signing for a Premier League side.

"Though valued at just over £10 million in mid-2018, his career has been on the slide since his Sao Paulo days, and he’s little more than a stop-gap."

We have asked Football Manager expert Alex Stewart - a man who is no stranger to snaffling bargains and spotting potential, all from the comfort of his own laptop on the popular computer game - to offer an alternative perspective on the transfer market.

Alexandre Pato, once one of football's most prized assets, has made the move to the Premier League hoping he can revive his career with a successful loan spell at Chelsea.

I remember the Brazilian being immense on Fifa a few years back, but then he pretty much disappeared.

"Everton are hoping to do business - as manager Roberto Martinez hopes to push a £13.5m deal for Lokovotiv Moscow's Senegalese striker Oumar Niasse over the line. This one could well get done.

"Then it will be a case of whether Aiden McGeady, wanted by Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United, can be persuaded to leave on loan and if midfield man Darron Gibson goes in a similar deal."

  15. Fans view - Liverpoolpublished at 08:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2016

    Liverpool
    Jack Lusby, This is Anfield

It looks likely to be a quiet deadline day for Liverpool, as it has for the most part of the January window as a whole. Jurgen Klopp has taken a practical, rational approach to what is a fierce mid-season market with little value to be found.

The big talking point of the window for Liverpool was a £24m bid for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Alex Teixeira, but his club are now playing hardball in demanding closer to £50m. At that price, Klopp would be right to turn his nose away and wait for the summer.

Expect departures for youth duo Lawrence Vigouroux and Jerome Sinclair, but little else. Fingers are firmly crossed for a surprise or two…

    Liverpool

    Alex TeixeiraImage source, Getty Images

"Liverpool's pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk's Brazilian Alex Teixeira looks like it will have to wait for another day unless there are any last-minute deadline day developments.

"Chief Executive Ian Ayre flew to Florida to open talks with Shakhtar officials but a £24.5m offer with the possibility of around £3m in add-ons cut no ice, with the Ukraine club initially demanding £39m before insisting there was a £53.2m escape clause in the 26-year-old's contract.

"Liverpool were linked with a loan move for Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev in Spain on Sunday night but it is understood there is no serious interest and he is likely to join Sevilla - so it could be a quite one at Anfield unless Shakhtar relent quickly on Teixeira, which they usually don't."

Most of the Premier League deals done in this transfer window have been by teams near the foot of the table.

The most expensive signings by a British club have been the £12m Newcastle spent on England midfielders Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend. The most expensive sale has been Brazil midfielder Ramires' move from Chelsea to Chinese club Jiangsu Suning for £25m. Chelsea, meanwhile, have also brought in Alexandre Pato.

Bournemouth, backed by Russian businessman Maxin Demim, have spent £16m in total on strikers Benik Afobe from Wolves and Lewis Grabban from Norwich.

Teams at the top end are yet to twist. Arsenal spent a modest £5m on Mohamed Elneny from Basel and Leicester paid Birmingham £3.7m for bright midfield prospect Demarai Gray.
