It's getting towards that time of night. The pressure is on and the heart rate is rising.

Transfers have fallen through, fans are demanding signings and the deadline is fast approaching.

It is the moment when months of studious scouting can disappear out of the window to be replaced by the last-minute panic buy.

Former player Andy Townsend: "I'm surprised Manchester United haven't been involved in this transfer window. I'm not surprised by what has happened at the bottom end. Head coach Steve McClaren and Newcastle have done really good work."

    Danny Murphy
MOTD pundit and ex-Liverpool midfielder on Radio 5 live

"I'm not someone who thinks you always have to for the big names. Who else is there for Manchester United apart from Jose Mourinho? I'm a big fan of Ryan Giggs - I think he would get the club playing the right well."

The Times chief football writer Henry Winter: "Manchester United have to react. City's new manager Guardiola has praised United in the past. The advantage City have had is that they have people in high positions at the club who know Guardiola."

So Manchester City dominate the airwaves, while across the city it's all very quiet at Old Trafford.

The only rumour I've even heard all day is that Nick Powell may be leaving to join Hull. Did you expect more from Manchester United?

Spain-based journalist Graham Hunter on Radio 5 live: "Lionel Messi is very, very happy at the moment. He's very, very wealthy. He's been given a team leadership at Barcelona. He consistently says that he owes Barca a lot. It would take the Catalan club to really screw things up for him to look elsewhere."

    Barnsley

League One Barnsley, who have won their last six games in a row, have brought in Brighton midfielder Charlie Harris for an undisclosed fee.

The 20-year-old has signed an 18-month deal at Oakwell.

  18. In and out for Doucourepublished at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2016

    Watford

It may seem strange for Watford to have signed a player today and then immediately shipped him out on loan, but when you look closer the deal for Abdoulaye Doucoure makes a bit more sense. The Hornets currently have too many foreign players in their Premier League squad and so they need to find him an alternative club for six months. And what better place to send him than one of the other clubs belonging to Watford owners, the Pozzo family - namely Spanish club Granada.

Considering that he has signed a four-and-a-half deal at Vicarage Road, Hornets fans will no doubt see the 23-year-old at some point in the future.
