    Wycombe 0-1 Aston Villa

The best bit of attacking football so far from the hosts as Matt Bloomfield combines well with Garry Thompson out on the right wing and cuts the ball back for Sam Wood.

Wood has lost his marker and meets the cross with a meaty side-foot volley but can only guide the ball over the top.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Mark Bunn has two Wycombe players standing close enough to tell him what he had from breakfast from the smell of his breath as they wait for a corner.

He does very well to punch clear as the set-piece comes curling in under his crossbar.

It was exactly the same sort of delivery that Adam Bogdan missed entirely last night playing for Liverpool at Exeter

"Aston Villa have taken the sting out of Wycombe having seen them come at them early. They have got ti the ball quicker and worked their way into the game. They have now picked up a swift passing game."

Black humour amid the celebrations from Aston Villa's fans after that strike from Micah Richards.

"We've scored a goal" is the chant - along with a colourful question about Wycombe's quality as a side actually losing to Villa.

Suppose if they didn't laugh this season they might be tempted to cry.

“Villa have been getting on top in the last 5 to 10 minutes and especially down the right hand side, Carles Gil didn’t panic and slotted a good pass through to Micah Richards and he finished well.”

Micah Richards copped a heavy knock on his ankle in the act of scoring.

Wycombe defender Joe Jacobson was the man sliding in to make the block who instead clattered into the Villa skipper's standing leg.

It looked painful, but Richards is running it off with the goal-scoring adrenalin still pumping around his system.

"That goal was orchestrated by Carles Gil on the left hand side with some step overs before cutting in. It was well taken by captain Micah Richards.

    "Villa get the all-important lead."

That was a little top-flight quality.

Carles Gil faces up his man - the defender too scared to interrupt the Spaniard's flurry of stepovers - and lays the ball into the path of Micah Richards, 15 yards out.

The former Manchester City man carefully rolls a shot into the far corner to put his side ahead.

    Wycombe 0-0 Aston Villa

    Brian Little
Former Aston Villa player & manager on BBC WM 95.6

“Villa will have done their homework on Wycombe but they won’t really know until they play them and Garry Thompson in particular has been a real thorn in their side so far.

"Villa’s midfield has just been stopping Wycombe so far rather than being a creative force.”

    Phil McNulty

"Not much quality so far - Villa's fans seem more intrigued by a man walking his dog high on a hill behind the goal Wycombe are currently defending. He's got a great view of not very much up to now."

Villa are looking better up top than they are at the back.

Kieran Richardson floats in a cross from the left, it is batted away by goalkeeper Alex Lynch, but Ashley Westwood wallops high and not-so-handsome as the ball drops to him 20 yards out.

This Villa defence is very tatty.

Micah Richards goes AWOL at right-back, the ball is flicked into the hole he has left behind and Sam Wood's volleyed effort is well saved by Mark Bunn. Michael Harriman was lurking at the far post to snap up any scrapes.

Not too shabby from Villa, but their final pass is a little skew-whiff.

Rudy Gestede takes down a long ball on his chest, lays off to Carles Gil, but the Spaniard's pass to the over-lapping Kieran Richardson is over-hit.

There was space there if Gil had weighted it right.
