What a miss.

Newcastle finally create their first chance of the night and substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic has his head in his hands.

The striker is unmarked just yards from goal but somehow volleys Moussa Sissoko's cross wide. A horrible finish.

Tom Cleverley is the next to hit the upright, with a free-kick that is tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Rob Elliot. 

Newcastle are on the ropes. Everton are hammering the woodwork.

So, so close to an Everton second.

First Ross Barkley has a shot tipped onto the bar by goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

Then, seconds later, Barkley's cross flicks off the head of Jonjo Shelvey and is tipped onto the bar by Elliot again

A corner from the right for Everton, Ramiro Funes Mori climbs well, but heads wide.

Newcastle on the back foot.

This time Ross Barkley drives forward, combines with Arouna Kone, but attempts to be too clever and flicks the ball wide.

Newcastle make a change, with striker Aleksandar Mitrovic replacing Henri Saivet.

Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam on BBC Radio 5 live: "Everton are bright and still look the best team. Kone should have scored there, he could have possibly hit it first time."

Aaron Lennon has scored one - but he could easily have a hat-trick.

The winger comes in off the right wing, beats a couple of men but, 18 yards out, his low shot is turned away by the feet of Rob Elliot.

The loose ball falls to Arouna Kone, on for Romelu Lukau at the break, who blazes over the bar.

Seconds later, Kone breaks down the right but shoots across goal and wide.

Newcastle are looking more of an attacking threat but, as yet, nothing of note created in this half.

The Everton fans are calling for their side to get going again though.
