    Got to gamble

These two tables highlight how the Premier League's struggling teams - Aston Villa excepted - all swung into action during the January transfer window. The top teams appear to be happy with their lot. For now.

Four of the six teams at the bottom spent more than the entire top six combined. Very, very interesting and a definite pattern.

West Ham v Aston Villa (19:45 GMT)

    BBC World Service
Former Aston Villa midfielder Ray Houghton

"Villa are 10 points off fourth from bottom and the owner Randy Lerner probably doesn't think it’s realistic to get back. To have brought no-one during the transfer window is quite remarkable in many respects as this is probably the best window for teams at the bottom.

“Can they win enough games before the end of the season to stay up? They’d have to show championship-winning form. I think it’s going to be very, very difficult.

“It’s been the sad decline of a massive club.A team that won the league and the European Cup back in the 1980s, and the League Cup a couple of times in the 1990s. It’s been in free-fall the last few years."

You've got a new job and you ask when you can start. The reply? Well, because you signed your contract after 12noon yesterday, you'll have to wait until Saturday.

That'd never happen in any other sport but football, would it?

The antiquated system which covers our beautiful game means fans will not be able to see the likes of Giannelli Imbula, Leroy Fer and, er, Rhoys Wiggins tonight.

They were all signed after the noon cut-off yesterday afternoon.

    Rubbish.
