With 14 games gone in the Championship, the Potters are joint-bottom with just two wins and four points off safety.

He appeared to buy himself more time last month with two straight victories but followed that with two defeats.

Welshman Jones had been in charge after succeeding the sacked Gary Rowett in January. It followed a highly successful spell at Luton, in which he left the Hatters second in the third tier.

Speaking to BBC Radio Stoke last month, Jones said the Coates family, in charge at the club, had stuck by him "unbelievably" and that he was sorry he had been "unable to repay them".

Jones even joked that his own mum thought his time must be up , external- and there were widespread media reports linking Chris Hughton with the job.

Since Stoke sacked Mark Hughes when they were in the Premier League in January 2018, they've had four managers in 21 months.
