Not sure what has got into James Milner, but he is piling forward at every opportunity. Perhaps he has had his goal bonus increased. He sticks his forehead on Roberto Firmino's dinked cross but can't keep it down. The flag was up against Daniel Sturridge anyway.

Liverpool are steaming along nicely here. Not quite as nicely as the Flying Scotsman, more like the Transpennine Express between Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly.

Another chance here...but Roberto Firmino gets it all wrong. A punt from the back finds the Brazilian, who takes a touch before lashing across the face of goal. If he had looked up he would have seen James Milner and Daniel Sturridge begging for the squared pass.

Just seen a replay of the handball for Liverpool's penalty...it gets worse every time. It might even have made the cut of Danny Baker's Own Goals and Gaffes II. Clumsy.

Michael Tennekoon: At work, so recording the Man Utd game to watch later. Watching it on fast forward makes our play bearable.  

Shaky stuff from Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho invites some Augsburg pressure. The French defender inexplicably passes out of play, but makes amends by nodding away a left-wing cross seconds later.

Anyone wanting to seamlessly go from following this game into the later kick-offs featuring Manchester United and Tottenham is going to be very happy. That early goal means there is no chance of extra-time at Anfield tonight.

Augsburg briefly threaten, a miscued effort looping high into the fresh Merseyside air and dropping into Simon Mignolet's hands.

Ash: I don't think anyone but the ref managed to catch that handball until the replay. That is outstanding refereeing I must say.

It is a good spot by the ref because it wasn't obvious at first.

The Kop is already in fine voice, roaring out 'You'll Never Walk Alone' as the two sets of players congregate in the Anfield tunnel.
