Manchester United supporters have just groaned in frustration as the ball went backwards instead of into an attacking position. West Ham have certainly shown greater fluency.

Marouane Fellaini is trying to exert some influence but is an ungainly figure and has only put further pressure on himself by picking up that yellow card for a daft foul on Mark Noble.

The art of the early goal seems to have deserted us this weekend. I had to wait 85-odd minutes at Reading on Friday night, the full 90+ at Norwich and 77 minutes at Everton. Come on...

West Ham arrived at Manchester United full of confidence and it shows as they have much the better of the early phases.

Mark Noble is controlling midfield and both Andy Carroll and Emmanuel Emenike have troubled the home defence in the air.

The home fans are subdued while the 9,000 travelling West Ham fans are in noisy and buoyant mood.

Michael Carrick has basically turned into a midfielder who doesn't leave the perimeter of the centre circle. He lazers a 40-yard ball over the top looking for Marouane Fellaini's head but West Ham keeper Darren Randolph sweeps up and claims it.

And now Manchester United threaten, Ander Herrera volleying wide after great play down the left from Anthony Martial. Open game, good cup tie.

West Ham should be ahead! Mark Noble with a great ball out to Dimitri Payet, he waits and then sends Aaron Cresswell on the overlap, the cross needs to be good and it is! He picks out Emmanuel Emenike six yards out, but his header is a backpass!

Got to score. That's two good chances for Emenike already...

Marcus Rashford is a fox in the box, finding a yard of space to attack another good cross from Guillermo Varela. Has West Ham's early energy dissipated somewhat? 

Promising from the hosts as the youngsters link up, Guillermo Varela to Marcus Rashford, spins out of a tackle and finds Jesse Lingard, he drives on and shoots left-footed - but it's always going wide. 

I fear that ship may have sailed for Mark Noble. Although why not give him and Danny Drinkwater a go? That's what the upcoming friendlies are for.

Aaron Cresswell may not be a million miles away, he's started brilliantly today.
