Aston Villa are goners after a shambolic season that has lurched from disaster to disaster like a bad US comedy during a writers' strike. It should have been pulled at Christmas and replaced by repeats of the John Gregory years.

But who will join Villa in the Championship next season?

    Good afternoon!

Hello to all and sundry as the season winds to its conclusion.

The Leicester City show rolls into town tomorrow but while they put up the big top and round up the crowds we will focus on life down the bottom this afternoon.

The bottom four are all in action. There are two spaces left in the trapdoor.

There is no early game in the Premier League this afternoon but there is a lunchtime kick-off in the Championship.

I imagine this one had a bit more sting in it when the fixture was first moved some months ago - it's already relegated Bolton against Hull, who are nailed to a play-off spot.

Russ King: Bristol Rovers last day of the season needing a point to stay in the football league. Lose to a team in our kit.

In May 2014, Mansfield arrived without their kit and were forced to wear Rovers’ away kit from the previous season.

But it did not affect their performance as they beat Rovers 1-0 to end the Pirates' 94-year stay in the Football League.

The kitman got away with that one....

"Consider this scenario. Team A are 12th in the Premier League table and reached the FA Cup semi-final. Their place is assured in the top division for next season.

"Team B are relegated, have had as many managers as victories and are heading for the Championship after a dismal campaign.

"Now call Team A Aston Villa and Team B Watford. This is what, maybe unfairly, might have been expected back in August.

"Instead, in reality, Watford have been superb under Quique Sanchez Flores, while Villa are in disarray. But if Watford's owners decide to dispense with the popular Spanish manager, could they be Team B next year?"

"I am asking Aston Villa fans for forgiveness," said striker Gabby Agbonlahor in a statement this week.

The 29-year-old has stepped down as captain after he was pictured apparently partying immediately after their relegation from the Premier League earlier this month.

"This role was a huge honour to me and it hurts to have lost it," he added.

Agbonlahor won't be involved for Villa today at Watford, even though his suspension from the club has been lifted.

  20. 'I feel happiness around Watford'published at 14:41

Watford v Aston Villa (15:00 BST)

You'd like to think Watford fans would be fairly content with their season.

Like Bournemouth they have come up from the Championship and avoided going straight back down again, and they also reached the FA Cup last four.

Yet rumours are rife that manager Quique Flores could be on his way out at the end of the season.

The man himself addressed his future before Saturday's game with relegated Aston Villa: "I'm not going to justify the season. I have experience in football and I feel happiness around Watford. The way people read the season, it's impossible to say.

"What I understand is as a human being when you reach objectives, you want more. That is sometimes possible, sometimes it is not."
