Atletico Madrid's defensive play is hugely engaging - they actively funnel the Barca runners into cul-de-sacs and then ambush them. At the other end, Fernando Torres loses the ball cheaply twice in quick succession. When you only get 20% of the ball you can't be doing that.

Franck Ribery has missed a lot of football over the last year or two but he's shining like the star he is in these early stages, out on the left flank. He has the licence to roam though, and he is doing. Pep Guardiola had said in the build-up to tonight's game that Benfica have the best defence in Europe. He punctured it inside 100 seconds...

Lionel Messi spreads the play out of the middle with a lovely ball out wide - Atletico have everyone back and everyone narrow too. They let you have it out wide. Wonderfully drilled.

What a team - Baresi, Costacurta, Maldini, Donadoni, Rijkaard, Ancelotti, Gullit, Van Basten. Over 25 years on and at least eight of the XI remain household names.

Both teams tonight will be wearing their away kits, much to the annoyance of many of you I am sure. Here's the reason why:

"In an effort to improve visibility and clearly differentiate the teams for both referees and spectators, Uefa requested that FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid wear their second kits for both games of their upcoming Champions League quarter-final tie. Barça, thus, will be wearing their red and gold 'Senyera' kit, while Atlético will be sporting dark blue."

Bolton are almost down and defeat at Brentford tonight, coupled with a Fulham win at Preston, would leave them all but relegated.

Charlton already have a six-point gap to fret about and need a result at Ipswich, while MK Dons complete the bottom three and host Wolves.
