    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

Atletico are sitting back a bit now and Bayern are well on top. Philipp Lahm gets the ball just outside the area, produces some fancy footwork to wrongfoot his marker and get sight of goal, he shoots but the ball strikes Augusto Fernandez. Lahm screams handball, Mark Clattenburg is having none of it.

Phoenixville: That goal alone is enough for Atleti.

Aamer Iqbal: Would be happy to bet my house on 1-0 being the final score in this game. Bus park time.

Andrew Tarpey: What Simeone has done and continues to do at Atletico is incredible, the discipline second to none, like an upgraded Mourinho.

The world's second most famous Saul has been busier than his fictional TV namesake would be after a drugs bust in Albuquerque. The Atletico man has touched the ball more than any of his team-mates in the opening 25 minutes, being at the heart of their concentrated - yet rare - attacking play down the right.

    Goaaa...no!

For a second, it looks like Bayern Munich are level as the net bulges following Douglas Costa's free-kick from the right. Fortunately for Atletico it had struck the sidenetting.

Mark Clattenburg is the man in the middle today and he seems pretty keen to keep things ticking over as smoothly as possible. A couple of niggly free-kicks being given away but the yellow cards are staying in the pocket for now.

Peter Collins: That is just a little bit special. At least one of the semi-finals looks like living up to the hype.

Pete Card: Don't write off Bayern Munich yet, they have a way of coming back BIG.

RegularJon: Champions League semi-final? Better call Saul.

(not sure you're the first to make that joke though Jon...)

Xabi Alonso bends in a free-kick from midway inside the Atletico half but it lacks power and home keeper Jan Oblak has so much time he could probably bob off and make a quick brew before the ball drops into the area. As it is, he watches it come in before racing through the crowd of players to claim with ease.

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

It was a goal that deserves to win any match but it will be interesting to see what it does to both side's approach to this game. Will it wake Bayern up? Will Atletico drop back and try to protect the advantage? There's a long way to go in this game.

Meanwhile, Bayern come forward again but a promising build-up ends in disappointment as David Alaba sweeps a shot wide from distance.

This graphic doesn't quite do Saul Niguez's mazy run justice - but you get the drift. The Atletico scorer picked up the ball about 35 yards out, breezing past the poor challenges of Bayern's Spanish trio Thiago Alcantara, Juna Bernat and Xabi Alonso to finish.

That's his first goal in 10 games – last scoring against Deportivo in March.

Almost immediate danger for Atletico as a Jose Maria Gimenez makes a mess of his clearance, shanking the ball straight to Arturo Vidal, whose header looks to be on its way into the net before Gimenez makes amends by heading clear in front of his goal.

teh: Oh my days Saul what have you done?!

    Saul Niguez

    What a goal!

Brilliant, truly brilliant from Saul Niguez. The midfielder jinked his way through the Bayern defence, breezing past three or four perplexed Bayern defenders before topping it off with a cute finish into the far corner.

James Kelly: More excitement in five minutes in Madrid than the whole of yesterday's game. CL winners will come from this.

Fernando Torres reborn? The Atletico striker is in fine form at the moment, five goals in his past six games, and he certainly looks like a man high in confidence. He cuts into the box on the right and tries to sneak a low shot in at the near post but Manuel Neuer has it covered.

Still, good start by Atletico. They are quick to attack when they have the ball while Bayern are trying to play a slow, patient build-up game.

    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich

Atletico seem loathe to press the Bayern defence directly, instead shooting from distance or crossing into the box. Gabi floats a ball in for Fernando Torres but it is far too close to Manuel Neuer and it is another easy catch for the Bayern keeper.

Update:Hasan Salihamidzic was not crossing his fingers (see 19:36).

Gregory Croxford: In Germany you don't cross your fingers but press your thumb - that is what Hasan is doing.

EuroPaul, London: They don't cross fingers over there - they hold thumbs. That's what Hasan is doing.

Has anybody tried doing both for double good luck?

    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich

Despite Bayern seeing more of the ball early doors it is actually Atletico who have the first shot on goal. It's speculative at best, though, as Saul Niguez has a pop from 35 yards and it floats into Manuel Neuer's gloves.

Bayern Munich are dominating possession in the first couple of minutes but Atletico, at the moment, seem quite content to sit off them until they venture into their half and then they are quick to close them down.
