Man Utd 1-1 Liverpool (Agg: 1-3)
Jurgen Klopp is the first Liverpool manager since Graeme Souness in October 1991 to avoid defeat in his first game at Old Trafford as Reds boss.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "It is very disappointing. We could have the chance, that is the feeling in the dressing room. We have created enough chances to win and we know that when you attack in this way that Liverpool has counter chances. The way that we conceded that goal, at half-time they were all so disappointed. If we don't concede that goal I think it was possible.
"They gave everything. More than everything. I am pleased that the fans saw that and gave them applause at the end.
"In the second half we had chacces. Fellaini with his head and his foot. But you have to score three goals and that is not too easy.
"Liverpool had a free week but we had to play West Ham United. We also needed a little bit of luck but if you say that as a manager it is not good."

Hugh Rodger: Paul Scholes saying Danny Welbeck should never have left #MUFC, external. What, the same Welbeck setting the world alight at Arsenal?
Francis Edwards: Why all the fuss with Welbeck? His goalscoring record is awful. Clutching... Get over it United, your golden age is over.

Liverpool
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "It was nice and intense. You could feel the atmosphere again. They tried to play really offensive, but we had our chances, it was Liverpool v De Gea. He was unbelievable again.
"We scored an unbelievable situation. Fantastic. The game changed. He is a young lad still but he thinks about it.
"Sakho and Lovren were not too bad to be honest. They were great and they found legal solutions at the back.
"Jordan Henderson was ill. Can I use the word 'vomiting?'
"All my friends in Dortmund want to play us - but only in Basel."

"Louis van Gaal came in talking of philosophy and the players having to adapt. They have played patiently, with too many passes. It is difficult to play a possession game nowadays as you are crowded out. You have to a bit more direct, as Leicester have proven this year.
"Supporters will think that LVG is betraying the attacking traditions of the club. It was always difficult at Old Trafford but they have lost that fear factor. Once you are out of the Champions League it is difficult to get back into it.
"I can only see it getting more difficult for Manchester United. It goes in cycles."

I agree with Scholesy, why let a perfectly good striker like Welbeck who had just started to come good, who was born and bred at the club, leave for Arsenal? What is LVG doing, it's time up now!

Danny Welbeck or Javier Hernandez would have started tonight you would think. Hindsight is a wonderful thing when it comes to transfer business!
Man Utd 1-1 Liverpool (Agg: 1-3)
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes on BT Sport: "Danny Welbeck should never have been allowed to leave this club. He was here from nine years old, he could play on the wing or up front. He is quick, strong and can score a goal. He would walk into this team now."

"A club like Manchester United usually buy ready-made players. The players they've brought in are all young players who are learning their trade and it's a hard place to learn your trade. In time, I think they'll get there but it's going to be another year or two."

Liverpool midfielder James Milner: "Both teams had chances, we didn't play as well as we did in the first leg but we did enough. Their goalkeeper had a good game and made some saves.
"Philippe Coutinho is a great player and is only going to get better. You need that bit of magic sometimes."

"If you look at the game over 90 minutes, 1-1 was a fair result so Liverpool deserve to go through after two legs. United wasted chances in key moments of the game."
