An early Manchester United goal would maybe make things interesting again - but that away goal for Liverpool looks to have killed the tie off.

One man's wonder goal is another's defensive clanger...

Robert Edwards: Rave about the goal but the defending by Varela was shocking, schoolboy making schoolboy errors

Sean McLelland: You could have driven a bus through that gap De Gea left at his near post

Memphis Depay? Antonio Valencia? Manchester United do not have a proper out-and-out forward on the bench but Louis van Gaal could make changes.

Old Trafford was rocking all through that first half but I wonder how quiet it will be now. The away fans are understandably buzzing. Jurgen Klopp celebrated that goal in typical spirit...

"The last 10 minutes of the half Man Utd lost concentration and, all of a sudden, Coutinho has the ball and the finish was pure class. I don't think Man Utd can keep that tempo up. The game will get stretched and that will suit Liverpool. At the end of the day, Liverpool have more talented players going forward."

Talk about a mood-altering moment. Manchester United would have really fancied their chances going in 1-0 up at half-time - but Philippe Coutinho's brilliance has stunned Old Trafford.

Manchester United now need three more goals, Some task that - more than likely impossible.

"What a fantastic goal that is. If it was Messi scoring it we'd be raving about it for months. We know he's got a lot of quality and boy did he show it there. He just dinks the ball - he's a class player."

GOAL - Man Utd 1-1 Liverpool (Agg: 1-3)published at 45 mins

    Philippe Coutinho

    Wow! A game-changer! A tie-breaker!

Liverpool are level on the night, Manchester United now need to score THREE MORE goals.

Philippe Coutinho gets the ball wide on the left wing. No danger. He runs at Guillermo Varela. No danger.

He beats Varela to drive into the box. Some danger.

He cuts inside. Moderate danger. David de Gea comes out to close down the angle and Coutinho somehow dinks a beautifully-judged chip between the keeper and the post.

    Wonderful!

  12. CLOSE!published at 43 mins

Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 1-2)

Chances everywhere! Daley Blind pumps a clearance back into the Liverpool penalty area, Marouane Fellaini stretches to reach a ball that perhaps nobody else in red could, he fires it back across goal and Marcos Rojo puts it wide from five yards out!

A sitter - though Mamadou Sakho was right on him.

Oh what a chance! Liverpool have the chance to equalise on the night and possibly put the tie out of reach. Jordan Henderson breaks play up, charges forward and finds Philippe Coutinho, he returns the pass with interest, a great pass from right to centre, and Henderson has the ball on the penalty spot. Hit the target and you score - but he puts it over!

    Huge chance.

  17. Martial's pace the big threatpublished at 20:46 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2016

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Old Trafford

Anthony Martial's pace has been causing serious problems for Nathaniel Clyne and that penalty was the direct result.

The goal has really lifted Old Trafford and Liverpool's defence has looked in trouble from the first whistle.

For all their struggles at the back, Liverpool are still looking a threat going forward, Game on  a real knife edge.
